Book Beat Poets

    Book Details:
  • Author : Carmela Ciuraru
  • Publisher : Everyman's Library
  • Release : 2002-07-09
  • ISBN : 0375413324
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Beat Poets written by Carmela Ciuraru and published by Everyman's Library. This book was released on 2002-07-09 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rousing anthology features the work of more than twenty-five writers from the great twentieth-century countercultural literary movement. Writing with an audacious swagger and an iconoclastic zeal, and declaiming their verse with dramatic flourish in smoke-filled cafés, the Beats gave birth to a literature of previously unimaginable expressive range. The defining work of Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac provides the foundation for this collection, which also features the improvisational verse of such Beat legends as Gregory Corso, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gary Snyder, and Michael McClure and the work of such women writers as Diane DiPrima and Denise Levertov. LeRoi Jones’s plaintive “Preface to a Twenty Volume Suicide Note” and Bob Kaufman’s stirring “Abomunist Manifesto” appear here alongside statements on poetics and the alternately incendiary and earnest correspondence of Beat Generation writers. Visceral and powerful, infused with an unmediated spiritual and social awareness, this is a rich and varied tribute and, in the populist spirit of the Beats, a vital addition to the libraries of readers everywhere.

Book Blues Poems

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kevin Young
  • Publisher : Everyman's Library
  • Release : 2003-09-02
  • ISBN : 0375414584
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Blues Poems written by Kevin Young and published by Everyman's Library. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in African American work songs, field hollers, and the powerful legacy of the spirituals, the blues traveled the country from the Mississippi delta to “Sweet Home Chicago,” forming the backbone of American music. In this anthology–the first devoted exclusively to blues poems–a wide array of poets pay tribute to the form and offer testimony to its lasting power. The blues have left an indelible mark on the work of a diverse range of poets: from “The Weary Blues” by Langston Hughes and “Funeral Blues” by W. H. Auden, to “Blues on Yellow” by Marilyn Chin and “Reservation Blues” by Sherman Alexie. Here are blues-influenced and blues-inflected poems from, among others, Gwendolyn Brooks, Allen Ginsberg, June Jordan, Richard Wright, Nikki Giovanni, Charles Wright, Yusef Komunyakaa, and Cornelius Eady. And here, too, are classic song lyrics–poems in their own right–from Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson, Ma Rainey, and Muddy Waters. The rich emotional palette of the blues is fully represented here in verse that pays tribute to the heart and humor of the music, and in poems that swing with its history and hard-bitten hope.

Book EU Internet Law in the Digital Single Market

Download or read book EU Internet Law in the Digital Single Market written by Tatiana-Eleni Synodinou and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-25 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the ongoing evolution of the digital society challenging the boundaries of the law, new questions are arising – and new answers being given – even now, almost three decades on from the digital revolution. Written by a panel of legal specialists and edited by experts on EU Internet law, this book provides an overview of the most recent developments affecting the European Internet legal framework, specifically focusing on four current debates. Firstly, it discusses the changes in online copyright law, especially after the enactment of the new directive on the single digital market. Secondly, it analyzes the increasing significance of artificial intelligence in our daily life. The book then addresses emerging issues in EU digital law, exploring out of the box approaches in Internet law. It also presents the last cyber-criminality law trends (offenses, international instrument, behaviors), and discusses the evolution of personal data protection. Lastly, it evaluates the degree of consumer and corporate protection in the digital environment, demonstrating that now, more than ever, EU Internet law is based on a combination of copyright, civil, administrative, criminal, commercial and banking laws.

Book The Power of Adrienne Rich

Download or read book The Power of Adrienne Rich written by Hilary Holladay and published by Nan A. Talese. This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive biography of Adrienne Rich, feminist and queer icon and internationally revered National Book Award winning poet. Adrienne Rich was the female face of American poetry for decades. Her forceful, uncompromising writing has more than stood the test of time, and the life of the woman behind the words is equally impressive. Motivated by personal revelations, Rich transformed herself from a traditional, Radcliffe-educated lyric poet and married mother of three sons into a path-breaking lesbian-feminist author of prose as well as poetry. In doing so, she emerged as both architect and exemplar of the modern feminist movement, breaking ranks to denounce the male-dominated literary establishment and paving the way for the many queer women of letters to take their places in the cultural mainstream. Drawing on a wealth of unpublished materials, including Rich's correspondence and in-depth interviews with numerous people who knew her, Hilary Holladay digs deep into never-before-accessed sources to portray Rich in full dimension and vivid, human detail.

Book excerpt: April 2020 found us in a particularly tender and tumultuous historical moment. And poetry, as it has before in times of crisis, arose to meet us, giving voice to the individual experience where ordinary language falls short. Poetry, after all, offers us meaning -- through both the writing and the reading of it, we encounter ourselves, the world, and connection with each other. These gatherings grew from Mindful Poetry Moments, a special collaboration between our organizations, The Well and The On Being Project. Recognizing that students might not encounter poetry in the course of a normal school day, we wanted to offer students the chance to pause and reflect with poetry during National Poetry Month. Accompanied by mindful prompts, students listened to the poems from the On Being Project archive while reflecting on questions like, "Does this poem encourage gratitude? How?" The 2020 program included poems by Brad Aaron Modlin, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Naomi Shihab Nye, Carrie Newcomer and Gregory Orr. We had planned to host a couple of events at the Mercantile Library in Cincinnati, giving us a chance to engage with Mindful Poetry Moments together. But then the world changed amid, and we were faced with a new reality in which we could no longer meet in person, we made the decision to pivot and meet virtually rather. Once a week, an intergenerational and international group of poets and deep thinkers logged oin from their various locations. Each of them helped to shape a warm, creative and generative container. Love and hope held us together. It was powerful to see the world through the words and experiences of others. And we are pleased to share many of those writings with you, as well as the prompts we worked with to make our own response poems. The poems within this compilation are presented as they were given to us, without edits. Who would have known an unforeseen change of plans and a container for celebrating poems would meet us so well in this moment? If anyone did, it was most certainly a poet.Stacy Sims and Eddie Gonzalez
