Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alive with the wisdom, artistry, and emotion of more than 250 poets from nearly one hundred countries, this anthology celebrates the multifaceted experience of contemporary manhood. The lives into which these poems invite us reveal the influences of culture, heredity, personal experience, values, beliefs, wishes, desires, loves, and betrayals. Men are notoriously reluctant to open up and discuss these things; and yet when they do--as in these poems--they tell us about their families, lovers, relationships, political and religious beliefs, sexuality, and childhoods. There is much to learn here about who men are and how they see their worlds. Collects close to three hundred poems, in English or English translation, by more than 250 poets. Nearly one hundred countries are represented, from Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Africa, South America, Central America and the Caribbean, North America, and Oceania (including Australia and New Zealand). Organized in topical sections: Boyhood and Youth; Families; Identities: Cultural, Personal, Male; Men and Women; Myth, Archetypes, and Spirituality; Politics, War, and Revolution; Sex and Sexuality; Poets and Poetry, Artists and Art; Brothers, Friends, Mentors, and Rivals; Work, Sports, and Games; Aging, Illness, and Death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manhood, or Scenes From the Past: A Series of Poems The reader of a former volume, written by the au thor of the present, will recognise, in this, the contin nation of a work, which was there left unfinished. To those who have not seen that volume, it may be meces sary to say, that the original design embraced a series of poems, in which the progress of Human Life should be traced from infancy to old age. The part formerly published was devoted to Youth; the subject of the present is Manhood as that of the next (should anoth er follow) will be Age. But though thus connected, in design, each forms a separate work, complete in it self, without reference to the two other parts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on issues common to men today, and unique in its personal, intimate approach to maleness, Man to Man: Poems for Men is a collection of free style poems aimed at both the intellect and the buried emotions of the modern male. Based on the author’s life experiences, it explores and redefines the meaning of masculinity and the demanding roles confronting men in today’s world. In our society, masculinity and poetry do not often go together; the author, through this book, seeks to change that. Appealing to women as well as to men, Man to Man: Poems for Men is more than a book of free-standing, independent poems. Collectively, the poems create an autobiography of sorts, covering the experiences and expectations encountered by men throughout their lives. At the same time, topics ranging from parenting and relationships to politics and religion make this an “Issues” book that the author hopes will encourage private and public discussion of concerns important to each of us. The poems are organized into the following topics: - Masculinity and Poetry - Manhood, Men and Me - Growing Up - Fathers, Mothers and Family - Relationships - Love and Marriage - Children - Humanity: Our World, Our Future

In ''Poems of Boyhood, '' the memories of childhood and glories of being a boy are joyfully proclaimed. ''Poems of Sonship'' is dedicated to the meaning of honor between father and son. Many fathers will especially love ''Poems for the Children's Hour'' and ''Poems of Heroism'' because they include some of the very best ''daddy read-aloud'' poems.

Book Man Up

Download or read book Man Up written by Carlos Andres Gomez and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-09-27 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the award-winning poet and actor’s acclaimed one-man play, a powerful coming-of-age memoir that reimagines masculinity for the twenty-first-century male. Award-winning poet, actor, and writer Carlos Andrés Gómez is a supremely gifted storyteller with a captivating voice whose power resonates equally on the live stage and on the page. In one of his most moving spoken-word poems, Gómez recounts a confrontation he once had after accidentally bumping into another man at a club. Just as they were about to fight, Gómez experienced an unexplainable surge of emotion that made his eyes well up with tears. Everyone at the scene jumped back, as if crying, or showing vulnerability, was the most insane thing that Gómez could possibly have done. Like many men in our society, Gómez grew up believing that he had to be ready to fight at all times, treat women as objects, and close off his emotional self. It wasn’t until he discovered acting that he began to see the true cost of squelching one’s emotions—and how aggression dominates everything that young males are taught. Statistics on graduation rates, employment, and teen and young-adult suicide make it clear that the young males in our society are at a crisis point, but Gómez seeks to reverse these ominous trends by sharing the lessons that he has learned. Like Hill Harper’s Letters to a Young Brother, Man Up will be an agent for positive change, galvanizing men—but also mothers, girlfriends, wives, and sisters—to rethink and reimagine the way all men interact with women, deal with violence, handle fear, and express emotion.

Book Catullus and the Poetics of Roman Manhood

Download or read book Catullus and the Poetics of Roman Manhood written by David Wray and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-09-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book applies comparative cultural and literary models to a reading of Catullus' poems as social performances of a 'poetics of manhood': a competitively, often outrageously, self-allusive bid for recognition and admiration. Earlier readings of Catullus, based on Romantic and Modernist notions of 'lyric' poetry, have tended to focus on the relationship with Lesbia and to ignore the majority of the shorter poems, which are instead directed at other men. Professor Wray approaches these poems in the light of more recent models for understanding male social interaction in the premodern Mediterranean, placing them in their specifically Roman historical context while bringing out their strikingly 'postmodern' qualities. The result is an alternative way of reading the fiercely aggressive and delicately refined agonism performed in Catullus' shorter poems. All Latin and Greek quoted is supplied with an English translation.

Book Men of Our Time

  • Author : Fred Moramarco
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press
  • Release : 1992-10-01

Download or read book Men of Our Time written by Fred Moramarco and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1992-10-01 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking volume, Fred Moramarco and Al Zolynas bring together a comprehensive and widely representative selection of poetry reflecting both the diversity and commodity of male experience in the United States today. Since the beginning of the contemporary phase of the women's movement in the 1960s, various anthologies devoted to the poetry of women have articulated and defined a distinctive sensibility attuned to the particularities of a woman's life in our time. Although much has been written recently about the male role in our society as well, the discussion generally has assumed a sociopsychological or mythic perspective. Poetry, Moramarco and Zolynas believe, can reveal most about the nature of male life today, especially the enormous changes men have experienced in recent years. As the editors state in their introduction, "A quiet revolution has been taking place in men's poetry over the past few decades, as men have been chronicling the 'history of their hearts' and have been examining those relationships central to their being in the world: their connections to their fathers and mothers; their own sense of fatherhood and of being sons and brothers; their marriages, divorces, and other aspects of their love lives; as well as the ways they conceive of maleness and femaleness." The poems collected in Men of Our Time--257 from more than 170 poets--include a wide mix of ethnic and racial perspectives that reflect the multicultural tenor of American life. They reveal men's most intimate feelings about the loss of childhood, sexual anxieties and fantasies, aging, self-sufficiency and dependency, and the perennial quest for a masculine identity. Above all, the poems are unapologetically grounded in a distinctly male experience or imagination. Men of Our Time reclaims a poetry that is connected to and expressive of men's lives in the closing decade of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: John G. Paton was an evangelist for Jesus Christ among the South Sea cannibals. Since beginning Vision Forum, we have made it our goal to urge fathers to turn their hearts to home and to rise up with courage to address the issues of the age. When I share this message before an audience, I usually begin by quoting at length an autobiographical account, penned by John G. Paton in the 19th century, describing how his father's love and training prepared him to endure bitter hardship, to persevere against unspeakably difficult circumstances, and to resist sin. This may be the most important narrative of missionary work you will ever read. The book touched me on the deepest level and has become an important part of my life and personal vision. We have republished it because it contains the finest testimony of multi-generational love and devotion between a father and son that I have ever read outside the Scriptures. Paton, a descendant of the Scottish Covenanters, was able to love and lead to Christ the very people who tried to eat his wife and child. One of the most important books you will ever read to your children. An Autobiography.
