Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nineveh: And Other Poems The splendid heritage of two languages has fallen to me from a German father and an American mother. My ears have listened to the music of two worlds. Many of the poems in the present collection were written in the lan guage in which they are here presented. Oth ers were originally composed in German and rewritten in English. The latter are as metals transmuted by verbal alchemy and, with the ex ception of two, in no sense translations. I can not, therefore, claim, for any part of my work, the indulgence commonly granted to painstak ing translators by benevolent critics. Each of my poems must be judged by whatever intrinsic value it may possess. It must also be judged as a whole. It must not be Viewed from one nar row angle Of Vision - moral, aesthetic, or philo sophic. The truth, I take it, has many sides. Art, like life, is Janus-faced. In fact, it has many faces. Book Rub iy t of Solomon and Other Poems Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rub iy t of Solomon and Other Poems Classic Reprint written by Amanda Theodocia Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rubáiyát of Solomon, and Other Poems It is to be hoped that some day, not distant, will give us a collected edition of the writings of Miss Jones. What we receive now adds largely and importantly to her poetical work, especially in the historical quality which so many of her lyrics have taken from the inspira tion of great events. The Saving of an Em pire, dedicated to John Hay, and Panama, are among the fine poems of recent years which have that historical significance, and which greatly enrich the book. To say that a permanent high place in Ameri can literature belongs to the poems of Amanda T. Jones is to express the judgment of many whose critical opinion has vastly more weight than mine. Had, I read that before the composition of my own, I would have shrunk from entering into competition with one whose genius so far overshadows mine; but as that is the only point of resemblance, it would scarcely be Worth while to make an alteration in all other re spects, the candid reader will acquit me of plagiarism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Death of Themistocles, and Other Poems The verses in this volume, gathered from many years, cannot be supposed to convey any confession of faith, religious or political: they are, for the most part, insignificant records of various and often transient moods. In attempting to delineate the character of Themistocles, I have been careful to adhere to a position historically defensible, and to consult authorities as to the topography of Athens at the date of the events narrated. Download or read book Ahasuerus written by Joseph Pomeroy Widney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ahasuerus: A Race Tragedy is an epic poem loosely based on the Biblical Book of Esther. Its author, Joseph Pomeroy Widney was an educator, philanthropist, religious leader and doctor who championed the development of Los Angeles in the 19th Century. He was the second president of the University of Southern California and was one of the founders of the Church of the Nazarene. His politics and racial beliefs were controversial, and he was said to be the model for an oil baron in Upton Sinclair's novel Oil!, which was adapted for the movie There Will Be Blood. In A Race Tragedy, Widney tells the story of Ahasuerus, the Persian king of the Book of Esther who is widely regarded as Xerxes. Widney's fictionalized account depicts Ahasuerus as he wanders through the desert encountering some of the characters of the Bible. The style is that of the epic poem, and Widney uses symbolism from nature to tell the tale. One of the poem's themes is the reconciliation of Gentile and Jew. Widney had a transformative religious experience in the desert and returned forever changed, identifying himself with ancient Semites from which Judaism later sprang. Widney became something of a universalist, presaging in some way the theories of New Thought. However, readers may detect some anti-Semitism lurking within the poem. Despite Widney's contributions to Southern California culture, he was also known as an advocate of Eugenics and argued for Aryan superiority; His writings are still heavily quoted by white supremacists. Ahasuerus: A Race Tragedy is not a poem explicitly about Widney's racial politics. It will interest those who are familiar with Ahasuerus, Biblical studies or those who simply enjoy epic poetry. It is also yet another intriguing window into the mind of a complex American. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Endymion and the Longer Poems Classic Reprint

Download or read book Endymion and the Longer Poems Classic Reprint written by John Keats and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-09 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Endymion and the Longer Poems John Keats was born on the 29th of October, 1795. His maternal grandfather, of the name of Jennings, was the proprietor of a large livery stable in Moorfields, and his father, the head servant, who had married his master's daughter, after the fashion of Hogarth's honest apprentice, was killed by a fall from his horse in 1804, leaving his widow with three boys and one girl, and with sufficient means to give them a good education. Of these John was the eldest, George the next, and Thomas the youngest. The daughter Fanny was much younger. John re sembled his father in features and stature, while the two brothers were more like their mother, who was tall, and had a large oval face and a somewhat saturnine demeanour. She must, however, have inspired her children with affection, for, on an occasion Of illness, John, when between four and five years old, placed himself as a senti nel at her door, with an Old sword he had picked up, and remained there for hours, that she, might not be disturbed; and at her death, which occurred when he was at school, he hid himself for' several days in a nook under the master's desk, passion ately inconsolable. It is but little to you men, To whom the doors of Life stand wide; But much, how much to woman! She Has naught beside. You make the worlds wherein you move. There are forerunners: the aftercomers know A-verity their message: jostling proclaim With brazen tongues the truth arrived from far. But how the Prophet and his shaking heads, Wherewith shall solace his negation wide? The harmony which comes by death to him Is useless as a balsam: - if on high Ring out his sudden words because enforced By the tumultuous beating of his powers, When back their echoes drift to him again, He, broken in the throng, silently yields Their reputation to the weird, rude winds - The airs men breathe not - fitted for night and waste.
