Their words reach past the outer divisions to the universal currents of love and revelation that move and inspire us all. These poems urge us to wake up and love. They also call on us to relinquish our grip on ideas and opinions that confine us and, instead, to risk moving forward into the life that is truly ours. In his selection, Roger Housden has placed strong emphasis on contemporary voices such as the American poet laureate Billy Collins and the Nobel Prize–winners Czeslaw Milosz and Seamus Heaney, but the collection also includes some timeless echoes of the past in the form of work by masters such as Goethe, Wordsworth, and Emily Dickinson. Book The Bible and Poetry

  • Author : Michael Edwards
  • Publisher : New York Review of Books
  • Release : 2023-08-15

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh, provocative look at the link between poetry and Christianity, both as it relates to the Bible itself as well as to Christian and religious life, by an accomplished scholar. The Bible is full of poems. In the Old Testament, there are the Psalms and the Song of Songs, the great exhortations and lamentations of the Prophets, and passages of poetry woven in throughout. In the New Testament, Jesus describes the kingdom of heaven with poetic epithets such as “a treasure hid in a field,” calling the Son of God “the true vine,” “the light of the world,” “the good shepherd,” and “the way, the truth, and the life.” The Gospels reverberate with allusions to the poetry of the Old Testament; the last book of all is Revelation, a visionary poem. The Bible, in other words, asks to be read poetically from start to end, and yet readers have rarely considered what that might mean, much less heeded that call. In The Bible and Poetry, the poet and scholar Michael Edwards reshapes our understanding of the Bible and religious belief, arguing that poetry is not an ornamental or accidental feature but is central to both. He speaks personally of his early, unanticipated, transformative encounters with scripture. He offers close, insightful, and resonant readings of biblical passages. Poetry, as he sees it, is the vital and necessary medium of the Creator’s word, and the truth of the Bible is not a question of precepts and propositions but of a direct experience of its poetry, its power.

Book The Poems of New Revelation

Download or read book The Poems of New Revelation written by Joel Max and published by . This book was released on 2023-08-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Poems of New Revelation is a collection of poems revealing the reality of man, God, and nature from biblical, philosophical, and sometimes, scientific perspectives in this current "Now" time. The author Joel Max is a harbinger living in the desert in California. He declares that he wrote these poems as channelled messages like the author of the Book of Revelation depicted what he observed in the invisible world. His poems depict Sedona Mountain's nature in Arizona and St. Jacinto Mountain in Southern California, together with his own communications with nature. We lose poems when we lose our hearts. Poems often function as instruments for restoring feelings and dignity as humans. The poems contained in this book, are full of satire making readers observe the deceit, manipulation, and flaws of religious and/or political leaders who keep creating bondages locking up human freedom. While observing those, readers may see things that were invisible to them. At the same time, to some, the poems can be revelatory warnings that their candlesticks could be removed from their places as the Book of Revelation prophesizes. This book could be a new revelation restoring a reader's heart, dignity, true self, joy, and peace in the middle of a dark night of a soul.

Book Poets of the Bible From Solomon s Song of Songs to John s Revelation

Download or read book Poets of the Bible From Solomon s Song of Songs to John s Revelation written by and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The vividness and beauty of the language emerge in a fresh way . . . with evocative simplicity.” —Robert Alter, professor emeritus of Hebrew and comparative literature, University of California, Berkeley The world’s greatest poetry resides in the Bible, yet these major poets are traditionally rendered into prose. In this pioneering volume of biblical poets translated in English, Willis Barnstone restores the lyricism and power of the poets’ voices in both the New and Old Testaments. In the Hebrew Bible we hear Solomon rhapsodize in Song of Songs, David chant in Psalms, God and Job debate in grand rhetoric, and prophet poet Isaiah plead for peace. Jesus speaks in wisdom verse in the Gospel, Paul is a philosopher of love, and John of Patmos roars majestically in Revelation, the Bible’s epic poem. This groundbreaking volume includes every major biblical poem from Genesis and Adam and Eve in the Garden to the last pages of Alpha and Omega in Paradise.

  • Pages : 108 pages

Download or read book Revelation written by Sue Lochead-Lane and published by Wordcatcher Modern Poetry. This book was released on 2019-08-21 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CHAPTER 1: REVELATION I begin at the end of my writing, as these are mostly my later poems. They came to me in deeper moments, meditative states or sometimes even just out of the blue demanding attention to be written down. They reflect my spiritual journey through life, influenced by my study of, Esoteric Philosophy and Spirituality, Christian Hermeticism, Perennial Wisdom and The Divine Feminine. They give meaning and make sense of my life's journey, and in sharing them with others I hope to give an insight into a way of looking at life that may be useful to those who are also 'Independent Spiritual Seekers'. CHAPTER 2: SHORT POEMS These are just short and sweet and often fun, and can reveal a lot in a few words. Ideas and thoughts that come in a moment and can have more depth than originally observed. They are about love, sadness and the passage of time, in a nutshell. CHAPTER 3: NATURE AS INSPIRATION Based on the idea that what draws our eye and our attention, is what we need to observe in the world in order to know ourselves, 'nature as inspiration' is a perfect palette of opportunity. The burgeoning of spring flowers, the harbinger of hope and new beginnings, or deeply observing a plant or flower, can uncover the secrets of its existence, and are perfect mirrors to the soul. They can tell us through revelation, more than any intellectual analysis, what we are seeking or trying to uncover or express. They can reveal to us something we need to witness, from which we can then transform and move forward. CHAPTER 4: PILGRIMAGE These poems or writings are what I experience when I am open to a channelled level of consciousness. The words that reveal themselves have a totally different quality to my 'own' writings. They do not come from my own conscious mind and experience of life, but are a message that comes from a sphere full of compassion and understanding, and of unconditional love and support. I experience these moments when I enter the physical space of representations of the so-called 'Black Madonnas' and the Virgin Mary and focus on what they represent. These messages are very personal to my own experience, but I also feel they are universal in their appeal and are for all to hear. I have shared them with like minded people and in this anthology bring them to a wider audience. CHAPTER 5: MANY & VARIOUS This is a collection of my early poems and are descriptive in nature based on the everyday things of life like Kitchen Cupboards, memories of friends, travel, visits to art galleries, and world events. These poems taught me about the magic of words and how they could form not just a framework for an idea but through the spaces between the words, reveal the unseen in the ordinary, the hidden gem in the everyday passing of time. CHAPTER 6: VILLANELLES Villanelles are fun to do. There are rules to follow which give the poem a repetitive structure, and I have found when there is apparently nothing to say, something comes forth through the shape of the Villanelle, that can be surprising and has a life of its own. I don't often use this form, but when I do, I always feel I should explore it more often.

Book Poems of Inspiration from Genesis to Revelation

Download or read book Poems of Inspiration from Genesis to Revelation written by Reginald Love and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-01-03 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of poems about people in the Bible. It is an attempt to bring them to life, so that the average reader, believer or non believer will say, I got it! Now I understand who Job, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and Jeremiah were! It is by no means a replacement for the Bible, and I hope all who read it will search the scriptures for themselves to see if the poems are correct. For example, did the king really turn white and get weak at the knees in the book of Daniel? It is the authors hope and prayer, that all who read these poems, will not be able to put them down! And cause them all to want to learn more and more about the word of God. I had written many poems about the Los Angeles Lakers and only one poem for the church. This book is an attempt to change that, in a sense, saying, God, this ones for you! I found these poems to be heartwarming and inspirational. For Christians everywhere, or anyone curious about people of the Bible, a must read! Rev. Charles Harris II, Pastor, Village Baptist Church, Los Angeles,California.

Book excerpt: Keeping with his passion for translating images and stories from around the world, this collection of poetry holds true to Kevin's style. From the title poem 'Revelation', to '1200 Daughters' and 'Soul Music', each piece delivers something special and unique to its reader; and with this paperback edition you will have the chance to read three bonus pieces that are not made available in the ebook. "I put this collection together as a mixtape style release to accompany my first novel, 'Sweeping with God'. As most of my poetry is quite thought provoking and emotional, that too is the overall theme within this book. My experience with poetry is that although most people feel somewhat intimidated by it, for fear of not understanding, it's a great avenue to accompany truth and reach the heart." - Author note. "I think it's important for people to overlook any preconceived fears or ideas they may have about poetry when approaching Kevin's writing. His writing is fearless & raw, touching on subjects that just aren't being addressed or receiving the attention they deserve in our day to day. From the loss of a loved one to war to poverty & love & hope, there's something in this book for everyone." - Madchild, Award winning recording artist. "You have what every good writer requires, a different way of seeing things; Great work!" - Colin, on Kevin's poetry. "There are lots of great verses here. I particularly liked many of the more political ones. I'm certainly glad that many modern poets are resisting the move against rhyming and metered poetry." - Mike, on Kevin's poetry. "I enjoyed these poems, they are deep and serious in nature. The images and ideas really made me think about life and love, God and existence." - Malcolm, on Kevin's poetry.

Book excerpt: Fred Chappell says of Ted Olson's second collection of poems: "These surprising revelations are really reminders." The eleven 'chapters' of seven poems per chapter provide readers with poetry that Maurice Manning describes as, "refreshing, almost old-fashioned in that it is truly verse...composed generously with rhythm and rhyme, and that antiquated quality makes the gravity of Revelations all the more subtle."
