Book excerpt: A small Idaho town with larger-than-life spirits is investigated by a founding member of the Scientific Paranormal Investigative Research Organization. From the Native American tribes who first inhabited the land to the gold rush prospectors who flocked to the burgeoning town in the 1860s, Pocatello’s legacy is defined by fascinating historical figures and colorful characters. But many restless souls from the city’s past refuse to fade quietly into history. Join author John Brian as he records the voices and visions that haunt Pocatello today. Whether it’s the long-dead theater devotee who still attends shows at Frazier Hall, the specter of a woman who evaded a judge at the Bannock County Courthouse, or the many spirits that haunt a farm built on sacred Shoshoni tribal land, this collection proves that the Gate City is flooded with ghosts. Includes photos! “The stories in the book, Brian explains, are not reminiscent of exaggerated late-night horror flicks, but rather, the real life stories from the people who experienced them.” —Idaho State Journal

Book excerpt: This is the untold story of the devastating consequences of a misdirected federal response to domestic terrorism in the mid-1800s. Idaho's Massacre Rocks State Park is a crime scene, and the identity of the perpetrators of robbery and mass murder at Massacre Rocks has been successfully suppressed since 1862. The truth has been hidden by a well-orchestrated propaganda campaign. Even some modern-day historians have played a pivotal role in hiding what really happened at Massacre Rocks and the surrounding region. Countless emigrants were victims of mass murder, torture and robbery along the Oregon Trail and at Massacre Rocks, and propaganda successfully steered the federal response to innocent Northern Shoshonis at Bear River. The Bear River Massacre of 1863 was the worst massacre of Native Americans in this country's history. This book delves into some current Native American issues within the region of southeast Idaho and Utah, including the use of "redface" and Indian-themed mascots in several Idaho high schools. Pocatello, Idaho, has a distinctly relevant connection to the history of Massacre Rocks. The use of the "Indians" mascot at Pocatello High School illustrates a continuing view of Native Americans that has deep ties with the historical use of Indian themes in America, but also with the Mormon Church. This book traces the influence the Mormon Church had on the common understanding of events that occurred in central Utah and southeast Idaho, from the mid-1800s to today. The suppressed history must be told if there is to be justice. The countless emigrants who were murdered on their way west, and the victims who perished in the Bear River Massacre, deserve to have their stories told. This is a part of their untold story.

Book excerpt: Pocatello, named in honor of a Shoshoni tribal chief, began as a stage station between Salt Lake City and the gold mines in Montana. By 1878, tracks of the Utah & Northern Railway were laid through the valley, and a narrow strip of shops and living quarters built alongside them became known as Pocatello Junction. From its beginnings, Pocatello demonstrated its distinction as an economic hub after the Oregon Short Line Railroad moved its main operations there from Eagle Rock (now Idaho Falls). This further facilitated the growth of Pocatello, which incorporated as a city in 1893. The establishment of the Academy of Idaho (now Idaho State University) signaled the growing importance of Pocatello as a center of learning. The town's influence as a cultural headquarters is evidenced by the top-level talent that was attracted to local theaters. The continued growth of Pocatello, fueled by its significance as a rail junction, led to the city becoming the major metropolitan area in southeastern Idaho.
