Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The planet is currently experiencing alarming levels of species loss caused in large part by intensified poaching and wildlife trafficking driven by expanding demand, for medicines, for food, and for trophies. Affecting many more species than just the iconic elephants, rhinos, and tigers, the rate of extinction is now as much as 1000 times the historical average and the worst since the dinosaurs died out 65 million years ago. In addition to causing irretrievable biodiversity loss, wildlife trafficking also poses serious threats to public health, potentially triggering a global pandemic. The Extinction Market explores the causes, means, and consequences of poaching and wildlife trafficking, with a view to finding ways of suppressing them. Vanda Felbab-Brown travelled to the markets of Latin America, South and South East Asia, and eastern and southern Africa, to evaluate the effectiveness of various tools, including bans on legal trade, law enforcement, and interdiction; allowing legal supply from hunting or farming; alternative livelihoods; anti- money-laundering efforts; and demand reduction strategies. This is an urgent book offering meaningful solutions to one of the world's most pressing crises.

Book Operation Lock and the War on Rhino Poaching

Download or read book Operation Lock and the War on Rhino Poaching written by John Hanks and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2015-05-08 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aggressive poaching of rhinos needs to be countered with equal aggression. So argued Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, the founder president of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), at a 1987 meeting with John Hanks, conservation expert and WWF’s head in Africa. The result was Operation Lock, a secret initiative funded by Prince Bernhard and staffed by former SAS operatives. Operation Lock set up headquarters in Johannesburg and extended its reach into neighbouring states: Namibia, Zambia, Botswana, Swaziland and Mozambique. Its operatives planned to train game rangers, to pose as rhino horn traders in order to entrap buyers, and to expose the kingpins who were driving the trade. It was a controversial approach, all the more because it was working within apartheid South Africa in the late 1980s. When the existence of the project was finally leaked, WWF denied any involvement, and John Hanks took the fall. In Operation Lock and the War on Rhino Poaching, John Hanks finally tells the story of these explosive events from 25 years ago. As a leading international authority on conservation, he also deals with the scourge of rhino poaching up to the present, and gives powerful and controversial criticism of some of the current policies to curb poaching.

The sound of blasts, both grenades and IEDs, is audible time and again. The bullets fired from rifles and the ammunition from rocket propelled guns are a rage and these ricocheted the atmosphere .The citadel of pro-India political leadership has crumbled and the civilian governance is like ricks spread in various places unable to wield any authority. The semblance of government control is visible through forces personnel who roam in groups with guns dangling down their shoulders . The youngsters understood the story behind violence but not many stories conceived in the womb of the conflict. Stories of deceit and exploitation. And these stories gave birth to unholy nexus between the venal and the brute, people of different religion, varied outlook and background. And then such people colluded with each other to indulge in loot and plunder robbing our nation of resources. Resources of natural wealth and even human resources. The emotional and psychological health received a dent. In the process a love story, rather two go bust. Book Armed Conflict and Environmental Damage

Download or read book Armed Conflict and Environmental Damage written by Dr. U C Jha and published by Vij Books India Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armed conflict and military activities have serious adverse impacts on the environment. Modern weaponry, troop movements, landmines, hazardous military waste, and the destruction of forests for military use are a few sources of harm to the environment both during armed conflict and peacetime military activities. Ecological assaults in combat areas are often kept a secret by the government, resulting in even greater humanitarian and environmental harm. Environmental degradation is increasingly being recognized as one of the most significant challenges of the 21st century and its effects are being felt worldwide. Both domestic and international legislations have been inadequate in mitigating the impact of military activities. This book provides details of the environmental destruction wreaked during international and non-international armed conflicts and argues that the existing legal regime for the protection of the environment during armed conflict requires substantial modification. It puts forward the view that though it is inconceivable to impose an absolute ban on environmental damage during military operations, strengthening and clarifying the existing laws protecting the environment in times of conflict, and enforcing environment-friendly practices among military forces could go a long way in protecting natural assets of our earth.

John Worsham and Sam Quatro are summoned to an Amazon rainforest in Brazil to determine if a new, deadly infectious disease has killed all the workers at a site that is being cleared for construction. They find, instead, that the men are not dead, but are changed into shells of men without cognitive ability. They find DNA from a South China Sea puffer fish together with previously undescribed man-made neurotoxins. This leads them on an adventure to Africa where they learn the truth. A war is being waged between those wishing to protect and the perpetrators of the holocaust that is destroying the environment for profit. Sam and John themselves become converts and supporters of the "zombie conspirators". The story skillfully weaves together scientific and secular descriptions, novel militant action ideas to save the environment, ideas about power and greed and the possible future of the planet earth. Vivid descriptions of the fate of poached gorillas, chimpanzees, monkeys and other dwellers of the rainforest brings home the magnitude and the inhumanity of the environmental criminals that are plundering the world's rainforests today. This is a must read book for all who are interested in saving the environment.
