Book excerpt: FORMAT (FORtran Matrix Abstraction Technique) is a digital computer system consisting of three distint programs written entirely in Fortran IV. The system provides for generating, manipulating, printing, and plotting of large order (i.e., 2000) matrices commonly used in state-of-the-art structural analysis techniques. The capability of maintaining and automatic editing of case data has also been provided. Phase 1 of the system automatically generates matrices for joining, symmetric/antisymmetric disconnect, vibration, and stability analyses. Modules for converting continuous-to-discrete loads, analytic-to-discrete geometry, and a master case data file editor are provided to reduce input data requirements. Phase 2 of the system provides for the manipulation of matrices. The matrix operations (e.g., add, multiply, etc.), several special matrix operations, (e.g., adjoin), and severl control operations (e.g., save matrices, conditional IF test, etc.). Phases 3 of the system provides for self-explanatory report form printing of matrices and a nominal graphical display capability, including a geometric display.

  • Author : Roberto Casati
  • Publisher : MIT Press

  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Parts and Places written by Roberto Casati and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thinking about space is thinking about spatial things. The table is on the carpet; hence the carpet is under the table. The vase is in the box; hence the box is not in the vase. But what does it mean for an object to be somewhere? How are objects tied to the space they occupy? In this book Roberto Casati and Achille C. Varzi address some of the fundamental issues in the philosophy of spatial representation. Their starting point is an analysis of the interplay betwen mereology (the study of part/whole relations), topology (the study of spatial continuity and comapctness) and the theory of spatial location proper. This leads to a unified framework for spatial representation understood quite broadly as a theory of the representation of spatial entities. The framework is then tested against some classical metaphysical questions such as: Are parts essential to their whole? Is spatial co-location a sufficient criterion of identity? What (if anything) distinguishes material objects from events and other spatial entities? The concluding chapters deal with applications to topics as diverse as the logical analysis of movement and the semantics of maps.

Book The Math You Need

Book excerpt: A comprehensive survey of undergraduate mathematics, compressing four years of study into one robust overview. In The Math You Need, Thomas Mack provides a singular, comprehensive survey of undergraduate mathematics, compressing four years of math curricula into one volume. Without sacrificing rigor, this book provides a go-to resource for the essentials that any academic or professional needs. Each chapter is followed by numerous exercises to provide the reader an opportunity to practice what they learned. The Math You Need is distinguished in its use of the Bourbaki style—the gold standard for concision and an approach that mathematicians will find of particular interest. As ambitious as it is compact, this text embraces mathematical abstraction throughout, avoiding ad hoc computations in favor of general results. Covering nine areas—group theory, commutative algebra, linear algebra, topology, real analysis, complex analysis, number theory, probability, and statistics—this thorough and highly effective overview of the undergraduate curriculum will prove to be invaluable to students and instructors alike.

Book Condensed Isogeometric Analysis for Plate and Shell Structures

Download or read book Condensed Isogeometric Analysis for Plate and Shell Structures written by Buntara Gan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Condensed Isogeometric Analysis for Plates and Shell Structures proposes a novel technique for plate and shell governing equations based on isogeometric analysis, which condenses the dynamic equilibrium equation for plate and shell structures—suitable for reducing the computation cost of large degrees of freedom due to the adoption of Non-Uniform Rational Basis Spline (NURBS) models in the plate and shell element formulations. It features useful guidance for understanding the isogeometric approach and includes accompanying MATLAB® source code in each chapter to deepen readers' understanding of the fundamental theories and methods of civil, architectural, and mechanical engineering. Features: Adopts a progressive and rigorous presentation of relevant topics to facilitate use by students, academics, and professionals Seamlessly integrates the CAD geometrical data into the conventional FE plate and shell classical element codes Allows computation of analytical solutions of plate and shell theories based on a newly-introduced condensation method, not approximation theory Includes relevant MATLAB® codes

Book Theoretical Nuclear and Subnuclear Physics

Download or read book Theoretical Nuclear and Subnuclear Physics written by John Dirk Walecka and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is a revised and updated version of the most comprehensive text on nuclear physics, first published in 1995. It maintains the original goal of providing a clear, logical, in-depth and unifying treatment of modern nuclear theory, ranging from the nonrelativistic many-body problem to the standard model of the strong, electromagnetic, and weak interactions. In addition, new chapters on the theoretical and experimental advances made in nuclear physics in the past decade have been incorporated." "This book is designed to provide graduate students with a basic understanding of modern nuclear and hadronic physics needed to explore the frontiers of the field. Researchers will benefit from the updates on developments and the bibliography."--Jacket.

Book Higher Dimensional Varieties and Rational Points

Download or read book Higher Dimensional Varieties and Rational Points written by Károly Jr. Böröczky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the connections between arithmetic and geometric properties of algebraic varieties has been the object of much fruitful study for a long time, especially in the case of curves. The aim of the Summer School and Conference on "Higher Dimensional Varieties and Rational Points" held in Budapest, Hungary during September 2001 was to bring together students and experts from the arithmetic and geometric sides of algebraic geometry in order to get a better understanding of the current problems, interactions and advances in higher dimension. The lecture series and conference lectures assembled in this volume give a comprehensive introduction to students and researchers in algebraic geometry and in related fields to the main ideas of this rapidly developing area.
