Download or read book Plutonic Rocks in Ontario written by G. F. D. McCrank and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plutonic rocks of the Canadian Shield are being assessed as a potential host medium for the storage of radioactive waste. A study of the geological framework of three structural provinces (Superior, Southern, and grenville) within Ontario has resulted in an inventory of 1365 plutons which are identified on Map 1533A at a scale of 1:1,000,000. The plutons have been classified by rock type: granite (sensu lato) comprises 75% of the plutons, gabbro 15%, alkalic rocks 8%, and anorthosite 2%.

Download or read book Geology of the Appalachian Caledonian Orogen in Canada and Greenland written by Harold Williams and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1995 with total page 951 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the Canadian Appalachian region. The chapter on the East Greenland Caledonides stands alone and there is no attempt to integrate the geological accounts of the two far removed regions. Rocks of the Canadian Appalachian region are described under four broad temporal divisions: lower Paleozoic and older, middle Paleozoic, upper Paleozoic, and Mesozoic. The rocks of these temporal divisions define geographic zones, belts, basins, and graben, respectively. The area is of special interest because so many modern concepts of mountain building are based on Appalachian rocks & structures.

Download or read book Supercontinent Cycles Through Earth History written by Z.X. Li and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The supercontinent-cycle hypothesis attributes planetary-scale episodic tectonic events to an intrinsic self-organizing mode of mantle convection, governed by the buoyancy of continental lithosphere that resists subduction during the closure of old ocean basins, and the consequent reorganization of mantle convection cells leading to the opening of new ocean basins. Characteristic timescales of the cycle are typically 500 to 700 million years. Proposed spatial patterns of cyclicity range from hemispheric (introversion) to antipodal (extroversion), to precisely between those end members (orthoversion). Advances in our understanding can arise from theoretical or numerical modelling, primary data acquisition relevant to continental reconstructions, and spatiotemporal correlations between plate kinematics, geodynamic events and palaeoenvironmental history. The palaeogeographic record of supercontinental tectonics on Earth is still under development. The contributions in this Special Publication provide snapshots in time of these investigations and indicate that Earth’s palaeogeographic record incorporates elements of all three end-member spatial patterns.
