Book Plutarch s Cimon and Pericles

Download or read book Plutarch s Cimon and Pericles written by Bernadotte Perrin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plutarch's Cimon and Pericles: With the Funeral Oration of Pericles Contrary to my expectations nine years have passed since the first volume in this series was published, "Plutarch's Themistocles and Aristides." At that time four volumes were planned, - a Cimon and Pericles, a Nicias and Alcibiades, and a Demosthenes and Alexander, to follow the first. I must now be satisfied with the fifth century B.C., in this study of Greek history from the original sources by means of Plutarch, and omit the last volume, although I have made many studies and collected large material for it. The third volume, the Nicias and Alcibiades, I think can follow soon, if my sight is spared to me. There will then be accessible to students and teachers of Greek history, in popular form, material for the critical study of the greatest century in the history of Athens, arranged in connection with biographies, by the Prince of Biographers, of the six greatest Athenian statesmen of that century. While my chief aim is now to interest and aid students and teachers of Greek history, I also seek to gratify and satisfy, so far as in me lies, the lover of Greek literature and of Plutarch. Such an one need not be distracted or offended by the critical analysis of the great biographer's ideal ethical portraits in search of trustworthy historical residuum. It is only the dearth of other testimony that drives the historical student to such treatment of a purely artistic product. No one could be more conscious than Plutarch was of the difference between artistic ethical portraiture and the writing of history. The first only he essayed, and in this field became the world's greatest master; the second he eschewed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Plutarch s Pragmatic Biographies

Download or read book Plutarch s Pragmatic Biographies written by Susan G. Jacobs and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Plutarch’s Pragmatic Biographies, Susan Jacobs argues for a major revision in how we interpret the Parallel Lives. She integrates the existing focus on moral issues into the much broader paradigm of effective leadership found in Plutarch’s Moralia. There, in addition to moral virtue, the successful leader needed good critical judgment, persuasiveness and facility in managing alliances and rivalries. The analysis of six sets of Lives shows how Plutarch carefully portrayed Greek and Roman leaders of the past assessing situations and solving problems that paralleled those faced by his politically-active audience. By linking victories and defeats to specific strategic insights and practical skills, Plutarch created “pragmatic biographies” that could instruct statesmen and generals of every era.

Book A Commentary on Plutarch s Pericles

Download or read book A Commentary on Plutarch s Pericles written by Philip A. Stadter and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2017-12-10 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plutarch's Life of Pericles is one of the outstanding works of ancient biography. Called by some a coward and others a boor, Pericles was a genius as a statesman. He ruled Athens like a monarch between 441 and 430 B.C., a period of great political and intellectual achievement. In the first comprehensive commentary in this century on Plutarch's text, Philip Stadter explores both the literary and historical aspects of this extraordinary work, which is included here in Greek in its entirety. In an extensive introduction, Stadter considers the broad questions of the biography's structure, its place and importance within Plutarch's body of literary works, and its relation to its companion piece, the Fabius Maximus. He discussed Plutarch's historical method and argues that the biographer's innovative and thorough use of sources, especially contemporary histories, make Pericles particularly valuable to modern scholars. Examining the literary devices that shape and organize the work, Stadter analyzes the Greek text line by line. A detailed study of word usage and meaning complements grammatical and lexicographical notes that make the peculiarities of Plutarch's Greek accessible to readers unfamiliar with the original text. This evaluation of Plutarch's biographical technique is exceptional in its combination of archaeological, epigraphical, and historical analysis. Pericles emerges from the discussion as a masterpiece of later Greek prose and biography. Stadter's thorough and insightful analysis secures the importance of this text as both a work of literature and a vivid depiction of the society, culture, and politics of fifth-century Athens. Book Pericles of Athens

Download or read book Pericles of Athens written by Vincent Azoulay and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive biography of the legendary "first citizen of Athens" Pericles has the rare distinction of giving his name to an entire period of history, embodying what has often been taken as the golden age of the ancient Greek world. "Periclean" Athens witnessed tumultuous political and military events, and achievements of the highest order in philosophy, drama, poetry, oratory, and architecture. Pericles of Athens is the first book in decades to reassess the life and legacy of one of the greatest generals, orators, and statesmen of the classical world. In this compelling critical biography, Vincent Azoulay takes a fresh look at both the classical and modern reception of Pericles, recognizing his achievements as well as his failings. From Thucydides and Plutarch to Voltaire and Hegel, ancient and modern authors have questioned Pericles’s relationship with democracy and Athenian society. This is the enigma that Azoulay investigates in this groundbreaking book. Pericles of Athens offers a balanced look at the complex life and afterlife of the legendary "first citizen of Athens."
