Book excerpt: Peace of Mind (De Tranquillitate Animi) is a dialogue written by Seneca the Younger during the years 49 to 62 A.D. It concerns the state of mind of Seneca's friend Annaeus Serenus, and how to cure Serenus of anxiety, worry and disgust with life. For the modern reader, this short, powerful work offers insight into how to think like a Stoic. It is a road-map for guiding the mind to, in Seneca's words, "always pursue a steady, unruffled course... be pleased with itself, and look with pleasure upon its surroundings, and experience no interruption of this joy, but abide in a peaceful condition without being ever either elated or depressed."

Book On the Tranquility of the Mind

Download or read book On the Tranquility of the Mind written by Seneca and published by . This book was released on 2017-06-22 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seneca the Younger (c. 4 BC - AD 65), fully Lucius Annaeus Seneca and also known simply as Seneca, was a Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman, dramatist, and--in one work--humorist of the Silver Age of Latin literature. As a tragedian, he is best-known for his Medea and Thyestes. He was a tutor and later advisor to emperor Nero. He was forced to take his own life for alleged complicity in the Pisonian conspiracy to assassinate Nero. However, some sources state that he may have been innocent. His father was Seneca the Elder, his elder brother was Lucius Junius Gallio Annaeanus, and his nephew was the poet Lucan. In this work, the dialogue takes up the causes of man's restlessness and boredom, then moves on to Seneca's practical rules for happiness and peace of mind, rules based upon reason and virtue. The work is a timeless classic on the ultimate pursuit of happiness.

Book Plutarch in English 1528 1603 Volume One Essays

Download or read book Plutarch in English 1528 1603 Volume One Essays written by Fred Schurink and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2020-12-04 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plutarch was one of the most popular classical authors in Renaissance England. These volumes present nine Tudor and Stuart translations from his Essays and Lives with a General Introduction locating these works in the context of Plutarch’s wider influence in early modern England. They offer selections from two of the classics of English Renaissance translation, North’s Lives (1579) and Holland’s Morals (1603): the essays ‘On Reading the Poets’ and ‘Talkativeness’ and the Lives of Demosthenes and Cicero and Caesar. They also include editions of a number of less well-known but equally significant translations of individual Essays and Lives, one available in manuscript alone until now and several not reprinted since the sixteenth century: Thomas Wyatt’s The Quiet of Mind (1528), Thomas Elyot’s The Education or Bringing up of Children (1528–30), Thomas Blundeville’s The Learned Prince (1561), and Henry Parker, Lord Morley’s The Story of Paullus Aemilius (1542–46/7). Detailed annotations trace how translators drew on, and departed from, Greek, Latin, and French editions of Plutarch while introductions to each of the works examine their impact on English Renaissance literature and culture. By presenting a wide range of translations from the Essays and Lives, the volumes bring to light the variety of translation practices and the different social, political, and cultural contexts in which Plutarch was read and translated in Tudor and Stuart England.

However, some sources state that he may have been innocent. His father was Seneca the Elder, his elder brother was Lucius Junius Gallio Annaeanus, and his nephew was the poet Lucan.Seneca's dialogue with Serenus, more of an essay than a dialogue, is essentially comprised of the many tenets of Stoic morals and virtues. Seneca explains to Serenus how to maintain a tranquil mind, and in doing so runs down the 13 or so high points of Stoic doctrine. One of the newer points was doing whatever you can to be productive and helpful. I suppose this could be inferred from more established Stoic literature, but I liked the particular exhortations on the subject of Seneca to Serenus. Essentially, one should always do what they can, regardless of the hand they are dealt. If only everyone would act in this way. I think you would see many more volunteers, at least.

Book Ancient Readings of Plato s Phaedo

Download or read book Ancient Readings of Plato s Phaedo written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-09-17 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plato’s Phaedo has never failed to attract the attention of philosophers and scholars. Yet the history of its reception in Antiquity has been little studied. The present volume therefore proposes to examine not only the Platonic exegetical tradition surrounding this dialogue, which culminates in the commentaries of Damascius and Olympiodorus, but also its place in the reflections of the rival Peripatetic, Stoic, and Sceptical schools. This volume thus aims to shed light on the surviving commentaries and their sources, as well as on less familiar aspects of the history of the Phaedo’s ancient reception. By doing so, it may help to clarify what ancient interpreters of Plato can and cannot offer their contemporary counterparts.

Book The Idea of the Sciences in the French Enlightenment

Download or read book The Idea of the Sciences in the French Enlightenment written by G. Matthew Adkins and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-29 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the development of the idea that the sciences were morally enlightening through an intellectual history of the secrétaires perpétuels of the French Royal Academy of Sciences and their associates from the mid-seventeenth century to the end of the eighteenth century. Academy secretaries such as Fontenelle and Condorcet were critical to the emergence of a central feature of the narrative of Enlightenment in that they encouraged the notion that the “philosophical spirit” of the Scientific Revolution, already present among the educated classes, should guide the necessary reformation of society and government according to the ideals of scientific reasoning. The Idea of the Sciences also tells an intellectual history of political radicalization, explaining especially how the marquis de Condorcet came to believe that the sciences could play central a role in guiding the outcome of the Revolution of 1789. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When writing to the Corinthians, the Apostle Paul used figurative temple language repeatedly to shape the identity of his audience ("Temple of God," "Temple of the Holy Spirit," and "Temple of the Living God"). While other scholars have identified the place of the Jerusalem temple in Paul's thinking or the impact of temples in the life of Corinth, there has been no comprehensive study of the way that figurative temple language in philosophy could have influenced the Corinthians' worldview. Hellenistic philosophy was pervasive in the first century and provided theological guidance for faith and practice to Paul's Gentile audience before their conversion. Philip N. Richardson provides a comprehensive survey of figurative temple language in Hellenistic philosophy, shedding light on the way that the kinds of philosophical thought known in cities like Corinth may have influenced the Corinthians to think about figurative temple language. This study throws into sharp relief the similarities and differences between Paul's use of temple language and that of philosophy, and illuminates Paul's setting of this language in the wider framework of 1-2 Corinthians and his purpose for its use in the argument of the letters.
