Book Mark Twain s Which Was the Dream and Other Symbolic Writings of the Later Years

Download or read book Mark Twain s Which Was the Dream and Other Symbolic Writings of the Later Years written by Mark Twain and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1966-12-01 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of these selections in this volume were comosed between 1896 and 1905. Mark Twain wrote them after the disasters of the early and middle nineties that had included the decline into bankruptcy of his publishing business, the failure of the typsetting machine in which he invested heavily, and the death of his daughter Susy. Their principal fable is that of a man who has been long favored by luck while pursuing a dream of success that has seemed about to turn into reality. Sudden reverses occur and he experiences a nightmarish time of failure. He clutches at what may be a saving thought: perhaps he is indeed living in a nightmare from which he will awaken to his former felicity. But there is also the possibility that what seems a dream of disaster may be the actuality of his life. The question is the one asked by the titles that he gave to two of his manuscripts: "Which Was the Dream?" and "Which Was It?" He posed a similar question in 1893: "I dreamed I was born, and grew up, and was a pilot on the Mississippi, and a miner and journalist...and had a wife and children...and this dream goes on and on and on, and sometimes seems so real that I almost believe it is real. I wonder if it is?" Behind this naïve query was his strong interest in conscious and unconscious levels of mental experience, which were then being explored by the new psychology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for Ysabeau S. Wilce's previous books: "This fresh and funky setting is rich with glorious costumes, innovative language, and tantalizing glimpses of history."—Kirkus Reviews, starred review These inter-connected stories are set in an opulent quasi-historical world of magick and high manners called the Republic of Califa. The Republic is a strangely familiar place—a baroque approximation of Gold Rush era-California with an overlay of Aztec ceremony—yet the characters who populate it are true originals: rockstar magicians, murderous gloves, bouncing boy terrors, blue tinted butlers, sentient squids, and a three-year-old Little Tiny Doom and her vengeful pink plush pig. By turn whimsical and horrific (sometime in the same paragraph), Wilce's stories have been characterized as "screwball comedies for goths" but they could also be described as "historical fantasies" or "fanciful histories" for there are nuggets of historical fact hidden in them there lies. Ysabeau S. Wilce is the author of Flora Segunda, Andre Norton Award–winner Flora's Dare, and Flora's Fury, and she has published work in Asimov's, Steampunk!, and Fantasy & Science Fiction. She lives in San Francisco, California.

Download or read book Trout Dreams written by James Merritt and published by Derrydale Press. This book was released on 2000-08-21 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A significant part of what has made fly-fishing such a widely read-about sporting activity is that it is populated with a world of colorful individuals. Merritt, who has written for numerous sporting magazines, assembles a collection of profiles of many of the "big names" in the fly-fishing world of our day. There is also a personal touch because Merritt structures each profile around his opportunity to fish with these individuals. Some of the individuals he fished with include Joe Humphreys, former fly-fishing instructor for Penn State University, and Seattle area filmmakers Jim and Kelly Watt who are also the hosts of ESPN's "Fly-Fishing Video Magazine" TV series. Practical knowledge and philosophical wisdom flow from the experiences collected in Trout Dreams.
