Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plum Culture and District Lists of Plums Suitable for Canada With Descriptions of Varieties On Prince Edward Island, the European plums do well; also in many parts Of Nova Scotia, and they do particularly well in the southern part of that prov ince. In New Brunswick, some Of the varieties succeed in the warmer parts of the province, particularly along the Lower St. John river and near the south coast. The European plums do exceptionally well on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, and also in the Okanagan, Kootenay and other valleys, and no doubt in many Of the northern valleys of that province with temperate climates, where they have not been fully tested yet, they will be found to succeed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plums of New York A special effort has been made to give as exactly as possible the regions in which the species and varieties of plums grow. Such an effort is made under the belief that this knowledge is of great value in the study of the factors which govern the distribution of wild and domesticated plants. If the boundaries of the regions in which a few scores of varieties of the several fruits grow can be accurately established valuable generalizations can be drawn regarding life zones and plant distribution. The reader should know what considerations have governed the selection of varieties for color-plates and full descriptions. These are: (1) The known value of the variety for the commercial or amateur grower. (2) The probable Value of new varieties. (3) To furnish data for the plum breeder; to show combinations of species or varieties, or new characters, or the range in variation. (4) Some sorts have been described because of historical value - to better show what the trend of plum evolution has been. (5) T 0 indicate the relationships of species and varieties. The varieties are divided into three groups according to their importance as gauged from the standpoints given above. Book Plums and Plum Culture

Download or read book Plums and Plum Culture written by Frank A. Waugh and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plums and Plum Culture: A Monograph of the Plums Cultivated and Indigenous in North America, With a Complete Account of Their Propagation, Cultivation and Utilization The principal reasons why Downing's great book will never be revised are these: First, the list of varieties known and grown in America is so great that one man cannot have an intimate knowledge of them all. Second, their local variations and adaptations are so multitudinous, now that horticulture has spread over the whole expanse of the continent, that each variety requires a more critical study than before. For these two reasons the various groups of fruits must hereafter be handled by specialists. Third, if all these variety notes could be collected into one work it would require several volumes to contain them. Fourth, fruit growers of to-day demand a more extended discussion of the matters of practice than was given by Downing; and this again requires additional space and further expert knowledge. Fifth, fruit growing is becoming more and more specialized, so that the man who grows pears does not care for a treatise on plums nor the plum crank much for a book about pears. Among the specialists in the different lines of pomology no one lot exhibits more ardor, enthusiasm, or esprit de corps than the self-styled "plum cranks." Book The Varieties of Plums Derived From Native American Species Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Varieties of Plums Derived From Native American Species Classic Reprint written by W. F. Wight and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Varieties of Plums Derived From Native American Species Comparatively few data appear to be available concerning the parentage of varieties, and in particular information is lacking as to what has served as either the seed or pollen parent of a given variety. Definite statements may be found indicating a direct wild origin for about 6 nigra, 50 americana, 7 hortulana, 3 munsoniana, and 15 angustifolia varieties, and probably the actual number introduced from the wild is somewhat greater in each case. A large majority of the varieties have originated under cultivation, yet, as stated above, exact statements concerning the seed or pollen parents of many of them do not appear to be available. What seem to be reliable accounts concerning the origin of varieties show Cheney to be the seed parent of 1 variety; De Soto of 12; Forest Garden, 2; Gold Coin, 1; Hammer, 1; Harrison, 15; Hawkeye, 10; Iowa Beauty, 1; Lottie, 2; Minor, 8; Poole Pride, 1; Pottawattamie, 1; Purple Yosemite, 1; Quaker, 2; Robinson, Rollingstone, 3; Sioux, 1; Surprise, 1; Van Buren, ' 9; Wayland, 2; Weaver, 3; Wild Goose, 26; and, Wolf, 4. So far as known, these parent varieties, with four ex ceptions, are of wild origin. These four exceptions are Hammer, which is a seedling of Miner; Hawkeye, a seedling of Quaker; Lottie.
