Download or read book The Freedom Writers Diary 20th Anniversary Edition written by The Freedom Writers and published by Crown. This book was released on 2007-04-24 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The twentieth anniversary edition of the classic story of an incredible group of students and the teacher who inspired them, featuring updates on the students’ lives, new journal entries, and an introduction by Erin Gruwell Now a public television documentary, Freedom Writers: Stories from the Heart In 1994, an idealistic first-year teacher in Long Beach, California, named Erin Gruwell confronted a room of “unteachable, at-risk” students. She had intercepted a note with an ugly racial caricature and angrily declared that this was precisely the sort of thing that led to the Holocaust. She was met by uncomprehending looks—none of her students had heard of one of the defining moments of the twentieth century. So she rebooted her entire curriculum, using treasured books such as Anne Frank’s diary as her guide to combat intolerance and misunderstanding. Her students began recording their thoughts and feelings in their own diaries, eventually dubbing themselves the “Freedom Writers.” Consisting of powerful entries from the students’ diaries and narrative text by Erin Gruwell, The Freedom Writers Diary is an unforgettable story of how hard work, courage, and determination changed the lives of a teacher and her students. In the two decades since its original publication, the book has sold more than one million copies and inspired a major motion picture Freedom Writers. And now, with this twentieth-anniversary edition, readers are brought up to date on the lives of the Freedom Writers, as they blend indispensable takes on social issues with uplifting stories of attending college—and watch their own children follow in their footsteps. The Freedom Writers Diary remains a vital read for anyone who believes in second chances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pleeaze! Tell me that wasn't a teacher!" is a humorously written, anecdotal account based on the multifarious events and incidents the author, Nick Crozby, has been privileged to encounter, enjoy and occasionally suffer during his long career in education. The events related were real but the names of all those "involved" have been changed to preserve anonymity. "Pleeaze! Tell me that wasn't a teacher!" follows his hesitant steps as a trainee teacher, struck dumb during an early lesson, confronted by parents in his first few weeks of teaching, and then encountering talented and dangerous pupils. Near disasters at a steel works, sea sickness on a ferry, claustrophobia down a coalmine and narrowly escaping avalanches in the Alps are just some of the "fun" times he enjoyed with his pupils. With his well-chosen stories and incidents Nick not only entertains but informs the reader about the nefariouscolourful behind the scenes goings on in the educational world. The dialogue is colourfully illustrated with many incidents some sad, others naughty and some very moving. Nick encountered a stuttering sportsman, a one handed pupil and even a boy brought up in a kennel providing him and you the reader with many poignant moments. He describes attempts to involve the wider community encountering in the process cases of child abuse, meeting a target criminal and working with police and social services on a regular basis. Incidents and characters seemed to follow him during his time in higher education Many pupils stand out for different reasons and Nick is still in contact with several of them. Nick Crozby married his childhood sweetheart and has been happily married for over 50 years. They have two children and three grandchildren. Nick Crozby is the authors' pen name.

Book excerpt: Each year on St Patrick's Day eighty million people around the world celebrate their Irish ancestry. Millions more don leprechaun hats and down pints of Guinness in the annual high-fiving of Ireland and the Irish. Charlie Connelly was one of them. He thought he had a good idea of what Ireland was all about. He was, after all, practically Irish. He had a bodhran and everything. Then, when he was least expecting it, he went to live there. Our Man in Hibernia follows Charlie's adventures among the Irish. Immersing himself in Ireland's language, music and literature, he learns how closely the rose-tinted image he'd grown up with matches the reality, and explores the land, from the small patch of Connemara bog that changed the world to the Holy Tree Stump of Rathkeale. From defining moments of the country's history - the Great Famine and the Easter Rising - to its quirkier phenomena, such as the National Ploughing Championships and the Rose of Tralee, in Our Man in Hibernia Charlie Connelly paints an evocative, entertaining and witty portrait of Ireland today.

Book The Speeches of Fannie Lou Hamer

Download or read book The Speeches of Fannie Lou Hamer written by Maegan Parker Brooks and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2011-01-03 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people who have heard of Fannie Lou Hamer (1917–1977) are aware of the impassioned testimony that this Mississippi sharecropper and civil rights activist delivered at the 1964 Democratic National Convention. Far fewer people are familiar with the speeches Hamer delivered at the 1968 and 1972 conventions, to say nothing of addresses she gave closer to home, or with Malcolm X in Harlem, or even at the founding of the National Women's Political Caucus. Until now, dozens of Hamer's speeches have been buried in archival collections and in the basements of movement veterans. After years of combing library archives, government documents, and private collections across the country, Maegan Parker Brooks and Davis W. Houck have selected twenty-one of Hamer's most important speeches and testimonies. As the first volume to exclusively showcase Hamer's talents as an orator, this book includes speeches from the better part of her fifteen-year activist career delivered in response to occasions as distinct as a Vietnam War Moratorium Rally in Berkeley, California, and a summons to testify in a Mississippi courtroom. Brooks and Houck have coupled these heretofore unpublished speeches and testimonies with brief critical descriptions that place Hamer's words in context. The editors also include the last full-length oral history interview Hamer granted, a recent oral history interview Brooks conducted with Hamer's daughter, as well as a bibliography of additional primary and secondary sources. The Speeches of Fannie Lou Hamer demonstrates that there is still much to learn about and from this valiant black freedom movement activist.

Book Teenage Rebels

Download or read book Teenage Rebels written by Kaiwen Leong and published by Marshall Cavendish International Asia Pte Ltd. This book was released on 2014-02-15 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You think the teenagers of today have it good? That their struggles are merely First World pains? Or only kids from broken families go bad? Think again. Negative influences are lurking at every corner and money can buy anything. For everything else, there is the Internet. Want friends? Join an online cult. Want drugs? Click and DIY. Want to forge? Learn how with web videos. Want porn? Upload your own. When such disturbing influences combine with an oppressive pressure to fit in, some teens stick to the straight path society has laid out, while others stray into dark alleys, only to be trapped, committing crimes or developing psychological problems that ruin them, leaving their futures in shambles. Through interviews, experience, and research, the authors expose stories of seemingly normal teens from average Singaporean families. Hear their voices and understand their mindsets. After all, beneath the rosy-cheeked exterior of that sweet child across the road lurks a possible future social psychopath Author Dr Kaiwen Leong is an economist, entrepreneur, lecturer and academic researcher. A graduate of Princeton University, he is currently an Assistant Professor of Economics at Nanyang Technological University. He is also an Associate Faculty Member at the Singapore Institute of Management, and consults for many private sector organisations, including Singapore Business Federation and Oxford Economics. His autobiography Singapore’s Lost Son: How I Made It From Dropout to Princeton PhD was published in 2012.

  • Publisher : Balboa Press
  • Release : 2015-04-30

  • Pages : 381 pages

Download or read book Love Conquers All written by Lenny and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you believe in miracles? Do you want to believe that Love (with a capital L) does indeed conquer all? Love Conquers All is a story about a white woman finding a long-lost black friend after twenty-eight years. Lenny has been incarcerated for more than nineteen plus years for six grab and dash robberies committed in six days while he was under the influence of alcohol and crack cocaine. Now facing two life sentences plus one hundred years, Lenny has been sentenced to die in prison even though there has not been one victim impact statement made against him. In their journey through his incarceration, her divorce, discovering cancer, and having major surgeries to prevent paralysis from the neck down, they fall inexplicably in Love with a capital L. But they must overcome huge obstacles, for both have received death sentences. Written in letter format, this story is raw, honest, and true-to-life in describing their spiritual transformations. It is a self-help manual, an examination of the brain and a testament to the power of our thoughts to create our reality. It is an honest exploration of many of the systems that make up our world: the criminal justice system, the healthcare system, religious systems, the education system, government systems, and the judicial system. It examines nature and mans relationship to it. It shows the family unit in all of its dysfunction and includes an examination of humanitys uglier side in terms of how it deals with racism, addiction, disparity, injustice, mental illness, obesity, apathy, complacency, and shame and sin. But more importantly, it is a story of redemption, gratitude, hope, and grace. This story offers a discovery of how miracles occur. It pays homage to the truth that Love does indeed conquer all.
