Book excerpt: In many ways, the history of domestic humor writing is also a history of domestic life in the twentieth century. For many years, domestic humor was written primarily by females; significant contributions from male writers began as times and family structures changed. It remains timeless because of its basis on the relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, houses and inhabitants, pets and their owners, chores and their doers, and neighbors. This work is a historical and literary survey of humorists who wrote about home. It begins with a chapter on the social context of and attitudes toward traditional domestic roles and housewives. The following chapters, beginning with the 1920s and continuing through today, cover the different time periods and the foremost American domestic humorists, and the humor written by surrogate parents, grown children about their childhood families, husbands, and Canadian and English writers. Also covered are the differences among various writers toward traditional domestic roles--some, like Erma Bombeck and Judith Viorst, embraced them, while others, like Caryl Kristenson and Marilyn Kentz, resisted them. Common themes, such as the isolation and competitiveness of housework, home as an idealized metaphysical goal and ongoing physical challenge, and the urban, suburban, and rural life, are also explored.

Millions more are carrying the mark of prison as those who were formerly incarcerated, including large numbers of men and women who have been released on parole. In the midst of such human misery, when "loosened tongues" are freed to sing of God's redemptive love, grief is diminished and the prison loses its power.

Download or read book And One More Thing written by Joan Caraganis Jakobson and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05-30 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unabashedly modern, practical, and wise, And One More Thing... is based on the journal Joan Jakobson created for her own daughter when she became engaged. When daughters strike out on their own, they usually know the basics: never answer the door without asking who's there, always write thank-you notes, don't wear a T-shirt that says "Beer Is Food" to a job interview. But it's usually only the do-or-die warnings that stick: daughters are notorious for their allergic reactions to their mother's advice. Now, for daughters of all ages who wish they had listened just a little more-and for their mothers, who want to pass on the invaluable information only a mother can give-comes a book that offers hundreds of sophisticated, savvy pointers on just about everything a young woman needs to know. In addition to telling you how much to tip bellmen and doormen, this fearless author explores subjects the etiquette books won't touch-like how to spot a cheating spouse and why actual childbirth should never be videotaped. Are e-mail thank-you notes ever OK? What are the important differences between Jewish and WASPy men... so-so and fabulous flower arrangements...imitation and real Pradas? Why should you use lash primer and never hesitate to talk about sex and politics at a dinner party? An often hilarious mixture of attitude, priceless insights, and time-tested observations, And One More Thing... is the only guidebook of its kind. Who could ever have guessed that Mother really does know best?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We know what pain, rejection, anger, bitterness, and loneliness look and feel like. We know how those emotions intensify when it is from our own family members, those that are supposed to love and take care of us but are not always successful at it. I wanted to feel what others had, to read it, and to experience it just a little. As others shared what their mom relationships were like, that pain was deeper than I realized before. I no longer wanted to live through your experiences; instead, I wanted to let you know I get it a little. Through some real honest moments came some really raw memories and painful truths, not just my own but yours as well. I found myself weeping and praying for all of you that shared your stories with me. I know I needed to go on a journey with God as my guide to find my "missing mom pieces" so I could heal and pass that on to you. So I pray you take this journey as you figure out what your missing mom pieces are so you may feel peace in the pain, strength in the sorrow, and healing in the days to come. Are you ready?

Readers may be able to identi fy with the characters who appear in each plot. A fi rst example rises in "Befuddled" the fi rst of nine stories found in A Collecti on of Favorites. Two high school friends have a disagreement at school. They decide to meet aft er school at the nearby park to sett le their diff erences. At the park their discussion escalates to anger, then to pushing each other. Mitch disobeys his mother and follows Carl to the shopping center then later fi nds himself in a police car. A surprise ending follows. In "I Did It for You," Todd's lunch recess at school began peacefully. He simply wanted to join his friends in their daily basketball game. But his practice shots were interrupted. Looking across the active schoolyard, he witnessed some behaviors that rekindled memories that caused him and his family much distress last summer. He felt he had to cross the yard and get involved. But was his decision wise? The fi ft h story in A Collecti on of Favorites is "Daughters." Two eighth-grade girls were longti me friends. They were bored with their summer vacati on, so both of them decided to take a shopping excursion to their local mall. But neither had any shopping money. One of the girls felt mischievous and broke the law then encouraged her friend to copycat the behavior. Their responses to each other aff ected a change in their relati onship. In "David's Crisis," David's parents are in a marital crisis, and David thinks his father is abusing his mother. Is it true, or is David wrong? What can a teen do about a situati on such as this one? Can the school help solve David and his parents' issue? In "Fancy Jeena," Jeena is being bullied in her new junior high school. Four girls have been harassing her at school. She tries to avoid them in the halls, the cafeteria, and the schoolyard. One of the bullies pushes and hurts Jeena aft er class one day. There are no witnesses to this incident. What is the cause of the bullying? Reader will discover, at the end of each of the nine stories, a short list of discussion items, which will relate to the preceding presentati on. In the eighth of our nine stories, "The Eighth Grade Court," Jamie's fi rst days of sixth grade begin sadly and stressfully. His dad had been killed recently in an auto accident. Jamie now feels a huge empti ness every day. They enjoyed close ti mes together, sharing thoughts and playing basketball. An opportunity arises at school, whereby Jamie is invited to play basketball with some eighth graders. But the invitati on leads Jamie on a questi onable and scary course. Mr. Lawrence NIssim's ninth and final story in "A Collection of Favorites" is titled, "The Plan". This tale seems appropriate for young players who participate in Little League baseball or softball. Or any sport, which welcomes parent participation. A player's success often follows when families attend his or her games. But often, the actions of a significant family member will deter the development of the athlete. Our main character was embarrassed by the behavior of his father during a game. The player wanted to continue to play the game he loved, but not with his father present. Howie's plan had to be successful.
