Book The Plays of David Garrick Volume 5

Download or read book The Plays of David Garrick Volume 5 written by Harry William Pedicord and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1982-09 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Garrick's accomplishments as an actor, manager, and theatrical innovator brought him great fame and fortune, and his ideas influenced not only his own age but succeeding ages as well. Yet as a playwright, a part of the elegant combination of talents that was David Garrick, he has never achieved the critical reputation he richly deserves, in main because of the unavailability of texts and the lack of proper assessment of the historic importance of his plays in the English theatre. This first complete edition makes available to scholars and students all the plays of Garrick in well edited texts, with commentary and notes. Contents: The Rehearsal (George Villiers and Others), 1742; The Alchymist. A Comedy (Ben Jonson), 1743; The Provok'd Wife. A Comedy (John Vanbrugh), 1744; and The Roman Father. A Tragedy (William Whitehead), 1750.

Book The Works of John Dryden Volume XVI

Download or read book The Works of John Dryden Volume XVI written by John Dryden and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-15 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade of Dryden's life, he brought four new works before the theatre-going public: a dramatic opera, a tragedy, a tragicomedy, and a number of appendages to an old comedy by John Fletcher, which was revived partly so that Dryden might have the author's third-night profits. He died that night, but his family received the money. The dramatic opera, King Arthur, benefited from a fine score by Henry Purcell and has remained in the operatic repertoire to this day. Cleomenes, the tragedy, was banned until Dryden was able to convince Queen Mary that it did not reflect any seditious sympathy with the exiled James II, after which it was successful. The fate of Love Triumphant, the tragicomedy, was different; possibly because of a growing swell of moral reform, the play was universally damned, even though its themes of incest and miscellaneous fornication had never brought rejection to Dryden in the past. The Secular Masque, Dryden's principal contribution to The Pilgrim by Fletcher, had undistinguished music, but its lively verse and broad review of the previous century kept the piece on the stage for the next fifty years, and in anthologies up to the present.

Book The Plays and Poems of Nicholas Rowe Volume IV

Download or read book The Plays and Poems of Nicholas Rowe Volume IV written by Stephen Bernard and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicholas Rowe was the first Poet Laureate of the Georgian era. A fascinating and important yet largely overlooked figure in eighteenth-century literature, he is the ‘lost Augustan’. His plays are important both for the way they address the political and social concerns of the day and for reflecting a period in which the theatre was in crisis. This edition sets out to demonstrate Rowe’s mastery of the early eighteenth century theatre, especially his providing significant roles for women, and examines the political and historical stances of his plays. It also highlights his work as a translator, which was both innovative and deeply in tune with current practices as exemplified by John Dryden and Alexander Pope. This is the first scholarly edition of all Rowe’s plays and poems and is accompanied by 15 musical scores and 31 black and white illustrations. In this fourth volume his poetry and the first part of his translation of Lucan's Pharsalia, described by Samuel Johnson as one of the greatest productions in English poetry, is presented. A newly written explanatory introduction by Stephen Bernard to the poems, and by Robin Sowerby to the Pharsalia, precedes each of full edited texts. The second part of the text and textual apparatus are included with the fifth volume of this edition. A consolidated bibliography is also included with the final volume for ease of reference.
