Book Tales of Old Japan Classic Reprint

Download or read book Tales of Old Japan Classic Reprint written by A. B. Mitford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of Old Japan Another class to which no allusion is made is that of the goshl. The Goshi are a kind of yeomen, or bonnet-lairds, as they would be called over the border, living on their own land, and owning no allegiance to any feudal lord. Their rank is inferior to that of the Samurai, or men of the military class, between whom and the peasantry they hold a middle place. Like the Samurai, they wear two swords, and are in many cases prosperous and wealthy men, claiming a descent more ancient than that of many of the feudal Princes. A large number of them are en rolled among the Emperor's body-guard; and these have played a conspicuous part in the recent political changes in Japan, as the most conservative _and anti-foreign element in the nation. With these exceptions, I think that all classes are fairly represented in my stories. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Japanese No Dramas written by and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 1992-10-29 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japanese nõ theatre or the drama of 'perfected art' flourished in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries largely through the genius of the dramatist Zeami. An intricate fusion of music, dance, mask, costume and language, the dramas address many subjects, but the idea of 'form' is more central than 'meaning' and their structure is always ritualized. Selected for their literary merit, the twenty-four plays in this volume dramatize such ideas as the relationship between men and the gods, brother and sister, parent and child, lover and beloved, and the power of greed and desire. Revered in Japan as a cultural treasure, the spiritual and sensuous beauty of these works has been a profound influence for English-speaking artists including W. B. Yeats, Ezra Pound and Benjamin Britten.

Book The First Print Era

Download or read book The First Print Era written by Daniel Fried and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-05 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First Print Era examines the rise of print culture during China’s Northern Song Dynasty (960–1127). Bringing together often-overlooked primary sources from the period and scholarship on many individual topics in Song print history, the book offers the first extended narrative in English of how print became entrenched as a sustained mode of textual dissemination in China. While discussing technical innovations and the growth of the print industry, the book focuses on how the rise of print affected several indispensable elements of Song intellectual culture: the expansion of the exam system, the canonization of Tang and earlier models, the rise of antiquarianism and connoisseurship, the birth of Neo-Confucianism as a new intellectual force, the growth of a new literati culture and new forms of literary production and critique, and the development of calligraphy as an art form that could be taught, critiqued, and divided into schools. Overall, the book describes a process by which print publication moved from a highly centralized state enterprise, back to expanded elite use, and eventually towards the popular print markets that would create new forms of expression during the Southern Song and Yuan dynasties. This book will be an essential read for students and scholars of Asian studies, Medieval studies, and those with a focus on print history and Chinese studies.

Book The Color Prints of Old Japan Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Color Prints of Old Japan Classic Reprint written by William Dallam Armes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Color-Prints of Old Japan What are they? Is a question often asked by those looking for the first time at a collection of Japanese prints. To say that they are chromoxylographs, is to give an answer strictly accurate. But as this is more concise than simple, it may be well to say in non-technical, popular language that they are prints in colors from engraved wooden blocks, as many blocks and impressions ordinarily being required as there are colors. In Europe towards the end of the eighteenth century similar prints were produced, but as their reception by the public was not such as to encourage their makers, there was no development of the art comparable with that in Japan in the same century. Book Clans and Genealogy in Ancient Japan

Download or read book Clans and Genealogy in Ancient Japan written by Masanobu Suzuki and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-02-03 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been a noticeable and enthusiastic increase of interest in Buddhist temples and Shintō shrines in Japan. The legends of these temples and shrines are recorded in many historical manuscripts and these genealogies have such great significance that some of them have been registered as national treasures of Japan. They are indispensable to elucidate the history of these temples and shrines, in addition to the formation process of the ancient Japanese nation. This book provides a comprehensive examination of the genealogies and legends of ancient Japanese clans. It advances the study of ancient Japanese history by utilizing new analytical perspective from not only the well-known historical manuscripts relied upon by previous researchers, but also valuable genealogies and legends that previous researchers largely neglected.
