Book Playing golf lengthens your life

Download or read book Playing golf lengthens your life written by Renata Freccero and published by Edizioni Altravista. This book was released on 2016-12-13 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practising sport stimulates cerebral activity. In children and adolescents, coordinated movement is the fruit of complex neuromotor programming that is defined as “bodily intelligence.” In the adult, physical activity combats and reduces cerebrovascular diseases, and maintains muscle tone and bone strength. This article comments upon research published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports in 2009, a study reporting that playing golf reduces the death rate for all causes by 40% compared to the life expectancy of a sedentary person. The natural environment free of irritating noise, walking on turf, the predominance of the colour green, the average duration of the game between three and five hours per day, combine to give the player a feeling of general physical wellbeing. Impulses that originate from the field of sight, thanks to the serenity of the environment, travel first to the thalamus from where, via a monosynaptic circuit, they reach the hypothalamus and create positive homeostasis. External conditions, through auto-regulatory mechanisms, induce in the golfer an inner stability in terms of chemical and physical properties. The sensation experienced by the player is of such pleasure as to lead to this sport’s being defined as a drug. The human brain thus perceives the golfing environment as healthy and desirable, but there is one aspect that is being missed. In Liguria, in August 2015, a growth in the population of wild boars was recorded. Much harm was done to agriculture, and considerable damage also occurred on golf courses, but in what ways? The devastation was concentrated along the fairways, while the greens and tees were left untouched. In Piedmont the situation was less invasive, but for the rest identical. Environmental pollution, periods of drought alternating with periods of heavy rain, mean that specific action is required on grassy areas, above all on the greens and tees. Frequently this means treatment with pesticides and weed-killers that are harmful to man, but they send no signal of danger to man’s brain. Presumably, however, the wild boar can somehow detect their presence. Although practicing golf leads to general psychophysical wellbeing, precise indications should be followed concerning the risks of this practice.

Book The Guru of Golf

Download or read book The Guru of Golf written by Thomas Moore and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While to some chasing a small white ball across a vast field of grass may seem pointless, the game of golf has, for centuries, drawn everyone from the poor working class to the upper crust of society. There is something enchanting about the experience of golf that sets it apart from other sports. In this collection of 18 short stories, The Guru of Golf celebrates perhaps one of the most widely popular of athletic pursuits. Thomas Moore shows us how golf can be a perfect metaphor for life itself—endlessly mysterious, joyful, and captivating, yet at times unbearable. From the tee to the green, he intertwines modern and classical tales that illustrate the challenges players face—on and off the course. A game rife with strict rules on etiquette and both physically and mentally taxing, golf tests the body, mind, and spirit. Humorous and insightful, The Guru of Golf captures the range of emotions associated with its players’ ardent determination; searches for meaning behind quiet, solitary moments; and reveals the struggles that try our patience, as well as the victories that make the game—and life—worthwhile.

But now, thirty years later, faced with a husband seeking immortality and Norma out of reach on a wave of professional glory, Susan begins to wonder whether she has made the right choices about life, love, work, and, most importantly, friendship. Nina Stibbe's new novel is the story of the wonderful and sometimes surprising path of friendship: from its conspiratorial beginnings, along its irritating wrong turns, to its final gratifying destination.

Book Life Reimagined

Book excerpt: “Barbara Bradley Hagerty is a wise and engaging guide through the possibilities…of middle age.” —Daniel H. Pink, author of To Sell Is Human and Drive A dynamic and inspiring exploration of the new science that is redrawing the future for people in their forties, fifties, and sixties for the better—and for good. There’s no such thing as an inevitable midlife crisis, Barbara Bradley Hagerty writes in this provocative, hopeful book. It’s a myth, an illusion. New scientific research explodes the fable that midlife is a time when things start to go downhill for everybody. In fact, midlife can be a great new adventure, when you can embrace fresh possibilities, purposes, and pleasures. In Life Reimagined, Hagerty explains that midlife is about renewal: It’s the time to renegotiate your purpose, refocus your relationships, and transform the way you think about the world and yourself. Drawing from emerging information in neurology, psychology, biology, genetics, and sociology—as well as her own story of midlife transformation—Hagerty redraws the map for people in midlife and plots a new course forward in understanding our health, our relationships, even our futures.

Book Beyond Wealth

Download or read book Beyond Wealth written by Alexander Green and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-03-31 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's not all about the money; the key to true riches Leo Tolstoy said, "Nobody knows where the human race is going. The highest wisdom, then, is to know where you are going." Yet many today chase the false rabbits of success: status, luxury, reputation and material possessions. In the quest to "have it all," our lives often lack real meaning and purpose. Beyond Wealth is the antidote. New York Times bestselling author Alexander Green takes things right down to brass tacks: We are here for a short time. Knowledge is limitless. Therefore, the most critical knowledge is not any particular skill but rather wisdom about "how to live." Fortunately, men and women have had several thousand years to think about what it means to live "the good life." And the answers found here, from Plato and Aristotle to Mahatma Gandhi and Stephen Hawking, will both surprise and delight you. Beyond Wealth provides insightful commentary on the most important aspects of our lives: love, work, honor, trust, freedom, death, fear, truth, beauty and other timeless issues. The book is both a thought provoking read and the ideal gift, guaranteed to ennoble, uplift and inspire.

Book excerpt: The promise of wellness and satisfaction has never been as ubiquitous in our culture as it is now. Images of happy people stare out at us from magazine pages and television screens; they are successful and busy, hurrying from the office to the opera, eating healthfully and acting responsibly. We are a nation of achievers but, as Dr. Edward Hallowell makes clear in Connect, what sustains us—emotionally, psychologically, physically—is connectedness, the feeling that we are part of something that matters, something larger than ourselves that gives life its meaning, direction, and purpose. Hallowell examines the real life most of us lead—overwhelmed, harried, pressured—and outlines the steps we can take to connect ourselves to the people and things that matter to us. He elevates the simplest forms of communication, understanding, and self-knowledge as examples of the human moment: the basis for the bridges we build to one another. He tells stories of personal growth—one woman's plan to bring a neighborhood together, another woman's assembling of a makeshift family, a real estate developer's institution of company-wide weekly pizza dinners—and identifies in them twelve vital ties to a more connected life. Hallowell concludes that within each of us exists the capacity to connect with the people around us—our parents, spouses, children, friends, and colleagues—to become who we want to be and to be happy with who we are.
