Book excerpt: The Apology is Plato's version of the speech given by Socrates as he defended himself in 399 BC against the charges of "corrupting the young, and by not believing in the gods in whom the city believes, but in other daimonia that are novel" . "Apology" here has its earlier meaning (now usually expressed by the word "apologia") of speaking in defense of a cause or of one's beliefs or actions. The general term apology, in context to literature, defends a world from attack (opposite of satire-which attacks the world). Crito is a dialogue by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato. It is a conversation between Socrates and his wealthy friend Crito regarding justice, injustice, and the appropriate response to injustice. Socrates thinks that injustice may not be answered with injustice, and refuses Crito's offer to finance his escape from prison. This dialogue contains an ancient statement of the social contract theory of government. Plato's, also known to ancient readers as Plato's On The Soul, is one of the great dialogues of his middle period, along with the Republic and the Symposium. The Phaedo, which depicts the death of Socrates, is also Plato's fourth and last dialogue to detail the philosopher's final days, following Euthyphro, Apology, and Crito.

This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plato's Apology of Socrates and Crito and a Part of the Phaedo In the following work the object everywhere kept in view has been to present the person of Socrates so clearly that the student may not fail to see what manner of man he was and why his influence was so decided upon his own time and upon succeeding ages. To this end a part of the narrative portion of the Phaedo has been added to the Apology and Crito (so often given together without that addition) in order that the story may not lack its climax and catastrophe. The account of how nobly Socrates bore himself in his trial and under temptation to escape from prison needs to be supplemented by the picture of the serenity and courage with which he drank the fatal hemlock; that so the fair capital may be placed upon the stately column and the moral scope and splendor of the man be fully exhibited. The wrong which is done to the Phaedo in so mutilating it is more than atoned for by what is thus added to our view of the character of Socrates. In the Dialogues contained in this volume the moral qualities of Socrates appear in their highest manifestation, as also some hint is given of his intellectual method; but the man is exhibited here at the great crisis of his experience, and but for a short time, so that we see only vaguely what the main work of his life was and still less clearly what was the intellectual process by virtue of which he made an epoch in philosophy. In the Introduction the attempt is made to state briefly what his life was devoted to doing, and what it was in his conversation which was intellectually so important and influential. The outline of the argument prefixed to the notes on each chapter is intended chiefly as a suggestion that it is of the first importance that the student be led to search out and express clearly for himself the play and progress of the thought as it develops. Book excerpt: This edition of Apology, Crito, and Phaedo by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato is authoritatively translated and splendidly presented. Each dialogue contains insights into Ancient Greek thought, and the culture of the society as a whole. All three of these texts use ordinary conversations as a means of conveying and evolving individual ideas. It is within these early texts that Socrates demonstrates his manner of gaining insight via asking questions - this Socratic method, whereby Socrates maintains an impression of ignorance - was to define the thought of Plato. Apology In this dialogue, Socrates makes his case to the Athenian people at his trial. Passionately arguing against the charges of impiety levied upon him, the philosopher uses logic, reason and his natural gifts of speech in attempting to convince the crowd against sentencing him to death. While unsuccessful, the margin of the vote was narrow - it is now that Socrates is taken to the cells, where his final conversations are to take place. Crito When speaking to Crito, a man from a wealthy local family, Socrates advances a number of points about justice and injustice. After Crito declares his admiration for Socrates peace of mind and collectiveness in the face of his death sentence, the two commence a philosophical debate. Together the pair draw a number of comparisons with society in order to reach a definition of what is just and unjust in the context of human living. The text makes a point of noting Crito's attempts at convincing Socrates to escape from prison and thus his death sentence - although such an escape might be arranged, Socrates refuses on the grounds that it is his duty as a citizen to face the death penalty. Phaedo One of the most famous dialogues of Plato, in Phaedo we witness the final philosophic discussions which Socrates partakes in before dying. His friends and family are variously present, until the final death sentence - that of drinking a poison solution of hemlock - is carried out. The topics here range from the form and essential immortality of the soul, the nature of learning and memory, and the nature of life. It is here that Plato, with Socrates as his principle character, advances a number of philosophic arguments and ideas which were to evolve later in his writings. An iconic text, the death of Socrates remains one of the most pivotal and popularly known events in the history of philosophy.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socrates: A Translation of the Apology, Crito, and Parts of the Phaedo of Plato Cence, and by including the preexistence of the soul, so as to be far more Platonic than Socratic. The Opinion of the real Socrates on these subjects may be inferred from his remark in the Apology, that, if there is any one point on which he would claim to be wiser than other men, it is this, that having no better knowledge than others of the world to come, he is likewise convinced that he has none. The same is true of all the dogmatic discourses on speculative subjects which are ascribed to Socrates by Plato. Still we must remember that it is through Plato that his master is best known and it is the Platonic Socrates quite as much as the real Socrates who has passed into history. Even Aristotle often quotes Plato's doctrines under the name of Socrates. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
