Book Handbook of Thermoset Plastics

Download or read book Handbook of Thermoset Plastics written by Andreas Kandelbauer and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-11-28 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unsaturated polyester resins (UPR) and vinyl ester resins (VER) are among the most commercially important thermosetting matrix materials for composites. Although comparatively low cost, their technological performance is suitable for a wide range of applications, such as fiber-reinforced plastics, artificial marble or onyx, polymer concrete, or gel coats. The main areas of UPR consumption include the wind energy, marine, pipe and tank, transportation, and construction industries. This chapter discusses basic UPR and VER chemistry and technology of manufacturing, and consequent applications. Some important properties and performance characteristics are discussed, such as shrinkage behavior, flame retardance, and property modification by nanoparticles. Also briefly introduced and described are the practical aspects of UPR and VER processing, with special emphasis on the most widely used technological approaches, such as hand and spray layup, resin infusion, resin transfer molding, sheet and bulk molding, pultrusion, winding, and centrifugal casting.

Book ECO COMPASS

Download or read book ECO COMPASS written by Xiaosu Yi and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-04-25 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, mainly man-made materials, such as carbon and glass fibers, are used to produce composite parts in aviation. Renewable materials, such as natural fibers or bio-sourced resin systems, have not yet found their way into aviation. The project ECO-COMPASS aims to evaluate the potential applications of ecologically improved composite materials in the aviation sector in an international collaboration of Chinese and European partners. Natural fibers such as flax and ramie will be used for different types of reinforcements and sandwich cores. Furthermore, bio-based epoxy resins to substitute bisphenol-A based epoxy resins in secondary structures are under investigation. Adapted material protection technologies to reduce environmental influence and to improve fire resistance are needed to fulfil the demanding safety requirements in aviation. Modelling and simulation of chosen eco-composites aims for an optimized use of materials while a Life Cycle Assessment aims to prove the ecological advantages compared to synthetic state-of-the-art materials. This Special Issue provides selected papers from the project consortium partners.

Book Twentieth Century Building Materials

Download or read book Twentieth Century Building Materials written by Thomas C. Jester and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the concluding decades of the twentieth century, the historic preservation community increasingly turned its attention to modern buildings, including bungalows from the 1930s, gas stations and diners from the 1940s, and office buildings and architectural homes from the 1950s. Conservation efforts, however, were often hampered by a lack of technical information about the products used in these structures, and to fill this gap Twentieth-Century Building Materials was developed by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s National Park Service and first published in 1995. Now, this invaluable guide is being reissued—with a new preface by the book’s original editor. With more than 250 illustrations, including a full-color photographic essay, the volume remains an indispensable reference on the history and conservation of modern building materials. Thirty-seven essays written by leading experts offer insights into the history, manufacturing processes, and uses of a wide range of materials, including glass block, aluminum, plywood, linoleum, and gypsum board. Readers will also learn about how these materials perform over time and discover valuable conservation and repair techniques. Bibliographies and sources for further research complete the volume. The book is intended for a wide range of conservation professionals including architects, engineers, conservators, and material scientists engaged in the conservation of modern buildings, as well as scholars in related disciplines.

Download or read book Hazardous substances in plastics written by Stenmarck, Åsa and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2017-02-08 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the project is to create knowledge on how plastics recycling can increase without increasing the risk of emitting hazardous substances to the environment. The first general conclusion is that to be able to increase recycling there are measures needed at different levels. The following areas are of interest: • Legislation: new legislation is not necessary, but harmonisation and clear guidance to the existing one is. • Market: to create a market safety on content is needed. • If substances added are less hazardous the recycled raw material would be “more safe” to use. • There should be higher attention put on the knowledge of the recyclers. • Traceability and content: Further work on labelling reaching the recycle part of the value chain needs to be developed. It is also needed to develop a systematic approach towards risk assessments linked to recycling.

Book Handbook of Pultrusion Technology

Download or read book Handbook of Pultrusion Technology written by Raymond Meyer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have needed this book for some time. There is a very wide spectrum of management personnel, engineers in continuing education, specifiers, designers, graduate students--not to omit investors-who need this material as an intensive short course and reference work permanently at hand. Even in recession conditions the pultruded product business has grown by double-digit percentages, and this level of demand will continue as the U. S. infrastructure is renovated. Demand has stirred competition, in turn leading to product refinement. This technology development is taking place in materials, such as processable epoxy systems; in exotic but reliable production systems; and in mold/part complexity. The Handbook of Pultrusion Technology is essential to orient us in the fundamentals. The substance in Ray Meyer's treatment of this RP process is not available in any other compilation. Joseph S. McDermott, Manager Reinforced Plastics/Composites Institute The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. vii Preface Since my retirement five years ago I have had several oppor tunities to review my files and draft reports on pultrusion, especially for overseas clients. This book resulted from organ izing and updating these reports and filling in some of the gaps in my information.
