Book On Axially Symmetric Elastic Wave Propagation in a Fluid filled Cylindrical Shell

This book was released on 1965 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early stages of propagation of a water hammer disturbance are investigated, water hammer constituting a special case of axially symmetric elastic wave propagation in a fluid-filled cylindrical shell. Many of the objectionable features of the elementary (Joukowsky) water hammer theory are removed, and particular emphasis is placed upon consideration of the effects of radial inertia of the fluid and of the shell. The formulation is appropriate for consideration of any axially symmetric acoustics disturbance which originates in the fluid and any of the usual engineering boundary conditions which describe constraints on motion of the end, or ends, of the shell. Motion of the shell is described by a thin-shell theory, and motion of the fluid is described by the axially symmetric wave equation, nonhomogeneous boundary conditions providing coupling of the fluid and shell motions. Application of a finite Hankel transform to the axially symmetric wave equation yields an infinite system of one-dimensional wave equations representing motion of the fluid. Integration of a finite set of these wave equations in conjunction with equations governing motion of the shell is accomplished numerically after a straight-forward application of the method of characteristics. Book The Theory of Rotationally Symmetric Plastic Shells

Download or read book The Theory of Rotationally Symmetric Plastic Shells written by Philip Gibson Hodge and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The defining equations for a rigid/perfectly plastic shell are derived from basic principles. On the basis of a single geometric assumption for the velocity field, generalized strain rates and stresses are defined and equilibrium relations deduced. Shell yield conditions and flow law are discussed in general terms and then specifically for piecewise linear yield conditions. Preceding the general shell problem, the theory of beams under bending and axial forces is discussed to give a general insight into plastic structural behavior. The paper closes with an application to cylindrical shells and a discussion of areas for future development.

Book Dispersion of Axially Symmetric Waves in Three layered Elastic Shells

Download or read book Dispersion of Axially Symmetric Waves in Three layered Elastic Shells written by Henry E. Keck and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The frequency equation for trains of axisymmetric harmonic waves traveling in infinitely long, three-layered circular cylindrical shells and rods is established on the basis of the three-dimensional theory of elasticity. The shell or rod is assumed to be made of three concentric cylinders each of different isotropic material, bonded perfectly at their interfaces. The frequency equation has been evaluated numerically and the effect of the geometric and physical parameters of three layered shells on the frequency of the first few modes is illustrated. The limits that the phase velocities of the various modes of propagation approach asymptotically at large wave numbers are established analytically and verified by the numerical results. (Author).

Book Axially Symmetric Wave Propagation in a Two layered Cylinder

Download or read book Axially Symmetric Wave Propagation in a Two layered Cylinder written by James S. Whittier and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The linear theory of elasticity is used to investigate axially symmetric wave propagation in an infinitely long two-layered cylinder. Each material is taken to be homogeneous and isotropic. A perfect bond is assumed at the interface, while the inner and outer boundaries of the composite cylinder are treated as traction-free. The dispersion determinant relating phase velocity and wave number for a harmonic train of waves satisfying these boundary conditions is presented. The character of the dispersion equation is investigated analytically and numerically. Stress and displacement distributions are also presented for the numerical example. Comparisons are made with an approximate solution of the same problem obtained by means of a thin shell theory incorporating thickness-shear deformation of each layer.

Book On Wave Propagation in Truncated Conical Shells Volume I Elastic Plastic Waves Generated by Axial Impact

Download or read book On Wave Propagation in Truncated Conical Shells Volume I Elastic Plastic Waves Generated by Axial Impact written by B. Albrecht and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The propagation of elastic-plastic waves in truncated conical shells was studied. A theory of wave propagation based on the method of characteristics was developed. It involves the solution of the deformation equations by integration along the characteristics. A computer program for the CDC 6600 has been written and the predictions of the theory are in good agreement with the experimental results in both the elastic and the inelastic range. Waves in the shells are generated by axially impacting hard-wired stationary shells with sufficiently large flat-faced cylindrical projectiles. Strain histories at a number of stations along the shell were measured and recorded for comparison with the theoretical values. The experimental work covered impact speeds from 120 to 8,625 feet per second. (Author).
