Book excerpt: Publication compiling work by artists Lucas Ihlein and Kim Williams, and collaborators, for the 2020 NIRIN Biennale of Sydney. In 2019, we (Kim Williams and Lucas Ihlein) were invited to take part in the NIRIN 2020 Biennale of Sydney. Artistic director Brook Andrew commissioned us to create a project focused on plastic. Andrew's vision involved artists involved at every level of the festival - from publication design, to food, education, and even transport infrastructure - and with our project, an intervention into the Biennale's environmental impact.Our project emerged slowly, over a few years, beginning well before the start of the public exhibition, and continuing throughout the live time of the festival (and beyond). One of the main aspects of the project was a "consultancy" with the Biennale organisation. In the spirit of Barbara Stevini and John Latham's "Artist Placement Group" from the 1970s, the model of artists-as-consultants pushed us into thinking of our role beyond the standard production of content for an exhibition. Rather, we took on the challenge of trying to re-design what a biennale (and what this biennale) could be, both behind the scenes and in the public eye.This publication compiles diverse elements from the project: offset lithographic printmaking, installation art, collaborations with artists including The Sisters of Perpetual Plastix, MC Nannarchy and Rox de Luca, and the creation of a music video with kids. The project was funded by Australia Council for the Arts, Biennale of Sydney, and Detached Cultural Organisation.

After initial experiments in the 1970s, plastic is currently experiencing a tremendous boom. Originally used for temporary structures like the BMW Pavilion in Frankfurt, it is now employed in many permanent buildings as well, including the recent Catholic church in Radebeul by Staib/Behnisch. Prominent international avant-garde architects such as Shigeru Ban and Herzog & de Meuron frequently use transparent plastic for their structures. Transparent plastic seems ephemeral and thus captures the spirit of the times. Its various qualities between transparent and translucent make it possible to achieve fascinating effects with light and color. Projects presented include the Allianz Arena in Munich by Herzog & de Meuron, the Rocket Tower in Leicester by Grimshaw & Partners, the Paper Art Museum by Shigeru Ban in Shizuoka, Japan, and the public housing development Cité Manifeste in Mulhouse by Lacaton Vassal. Seit einigen Jahren entstehen ebenso attraktive wie ungewöhnliche Bauten aus Kunststoff. Nach ersten Versuchen in den 1970er Jahren erlebt der Baustoff derzeit einen ungeheuren Boom. The contributors to this volume take a radical multi-disciplinary view of the challenge of human space colonization through the ongoing project Persephone. This book fundamentally challenges prevalent ideas about sustainability and proposes a new approach to resource austerity and conservation and providing truly sustainable approaches that are life-promoting. Readers will learn the details of the plans for Persephone – a real project that is part of the company Icarus Interstellar’s plans for the design and engineering of a living interior on a worldship to be constructed in Earth’s orbit within 100 years. Although the timeframe itself is only an estimate, since it is contingent on many significant developments, including funding and technological advances, the industry consensus is that within 100 years we will see manned space exploration beyond our solar system. This notion is shared by organizations such as the Initiative for Interstellar Studies and the DARPA-funded 100-year starship project. This book specifically develops the principles for the construction of a living habitat within a worldship – a multi-generational starship that contains its own world that supports colonists as it travels across great distances between stars at a speed much slower than light. Far from being a sterile industrial setup, such as the ISS, or even being a bucolic suburbia as proposed by Gerard O’Neill in the 1970s, this worldship will provide the pre-conditions for sustaining life beyond Earth’s environment, which may also lead to the evolution of non-terrestrial ecologies. Drawing on the principles of ecopoiesis and insights offered by the Biosphere 2 experiment that demonstrated what we have to learn about ecosystem construction, this book proposes first designing the soils of such a space. It should then be possible to set up the conditions that a first generation of colonists may experience in leaving our solar system to find new worlds to settle - perhaps in spreading life throughout the universe. Although the book takes a unique view of ecology and sustainability within the setting of a traveling starship it is equally concerned with the human experience on artificial worlds. Chapters come from a range of multi disciplinary thinkers who shed light on the brave new future ahead from different angles.
