This book was released on 1996-11-14 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Written by some of the world's foremost experts, the articles in this book show how plasma science can be applied to environmental problems, including atmospheric sensing and modification, energy conservation, reduction of air pollution, and processing of ordinary and radioactive wastes. Atmospheric CFC's might be zapped with big lasers. Urban air pollution could be removed by large convection towers built in or near cities. And weapons-grade plutonium can be destroyed with specially designed particle accelerators. Some of the technologies described here are in use already, while others are in the prototype stage, or are speculative approaches deserving of further study." Download or read book Plasma Science written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-01-20 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of its current physics decadal survey, Physics 2010, the NRC was asked by the DOE, NSF, and NASA to carry out an assessment of and outlook for the broad field of plasma science and engineering over the next several years. The study was to focus on progress in plasma research, identify the most compelling new scientific opportunities, evaluate prospects for broader application of plasmas, and offer guidance to realize these opportunities. The study paid particular attention to these last two points. This "demand-side" perspective provided a clear look at what plasma research can do to help achieve national goals of fusion energy, economic competitiveness, and nuclear weapons stockpile stewardship. The report provides an examination of the broad themes that frame plasma research: low-temperature plasma science and engineering; plasma physics at high energy density; plasma science of magnetic fusion; space and astrophysical science; and basic plasma science. Within those themes, the report offers a bold vision for future developments in plasma science.

Book Plasma Science and Technology

Download or read book Plasma Science and Technology written by Herman Boenig and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a systematic and comprehensive manner, this book describes the science of low-temperature plasma—a new field that is emerging at a fast pace. An expert well known in this field gives a coherent overview of the applications of low-temperature plasmas to chemical reactions, and in greater detail, to polymers formed or treated in plasma. After laying the groundwork with chapters on the nature of plasma and the variety of typical reactions that occur in discharges, the author deals with specific applications in the production of polymers. He then devotes a chapter each to the deposition of films, the nature of polymers produced in plasmas, and the specific properties of polymers, with a concluding chapter on additional applications of plasma technology. Herman Boenig emphasizes thin-film depositions—their high quality and integrity, as well as their applications in a variety of industrially important uses, including microcircuitry, integrated optics, and metal and other material coatings. He also discusses extensively the applications of plasma deposition in other areas such as high adhesion to metals, polymers, and glasses; high temperature resistance; special friction characteristics; and use in reverse osmosis, permselectivity, and other membrane applications. In a special chapter he covers the use of plasma in ion implantations, plasma cleaning of materials surfaces, and the technique now being considered for use in devices to clean polluted air and convert waste products in submarines and space capsules. Plasma Science and Technology should prove invaluable as a text for graduate students and advanced undergraduates, and as a reference for chemists, material scientists, metallurgists, environmental scientists, engineers, and physicists. It will be of particular interest to those involved in microcircuitry, microcomputers, integrated optics, optical equipment, desalination, biomedicine, thin films, adhesion, ion implantation, textile treatment, advanced composites, and chemical synthesis.

Book Introduction to Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion

Download or read book Introduction to Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion written by Francis F. Chen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TO THE SECOND EDITION In the nine years since this book was first written, rapid progress has been made scientifically in nuclear fusion, space physics, and nonlinear plasma theory. At the same time, the energy shortage on the one hand and the exploration of Jupiter and Saturn on the other have increased the national awareness of the important applications of plasma physics to energy production and to the understanding of our space environment. In magnetic confinement fusion, this period has seen the attainment 13 of a Lawson number nTE of 2 x 10 cm -3 sec in the Alcator tokamaks at MIT; neutral-beam heating of the PL T tokamak at Princeton to KTi = 6. 5 keV; increase of average ß to 3%-5% in tokamaks at Oak Ridge and General Atomic; and the stabilization of mirror-confined plasmas at Livermore, together with injection of ion current to near field-reversal conditions in the 2XIIß device. Invention of the tandem mirror has given magnetic confinement a new and exciting dimension. New ideas have emerged, such as the compact torus, surface-field devices, and the EßT mirror-torus hybrid, and some old ideas, such as the stellarator and the reversed-field pinch, have been revived. Radiofrequency heat ing has become a new star with its promise of dc current drive. Perhaps most importantly, great progress has been made in the understanding of the MHD behavior of toroidal plasmas: tearing modes, magnetic Vll Vlll islands, and disruptions.

Book Dynamic Coupling Between Earth s Atmospheric and Plasma Environments

Download or read book Dynamic Coupling Between Earth s Atmospheric and Plasma Environments written by Tilmann Bosinger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the relationship between the atmosphere and the external plasma of Earth in an unconventional manner. While the main mechanical energy is located in the dense atmosphere, the presence of Earth's plasma environment, which is immersed in the magnetosphere, causes a number of very interesting effects on the atmosphere. A list of such effects includes magnetic substorms, magnetic storms and aurora to the dynamics of the upper atmosphere, heating, thermal expansion, and vertical and horizontal winds. Particle precipitation produces excess ionization and electric currents, causes electric fields, affects recombination and modifies chemical reactions. These are processes which may become important in the climate. The collected articles provide an overview of these effects. This volume is aimed at graduate students and researchers active in the areas of atmospheric science and space science. Previously published in Space Science Reviews, Vol. 168/1-4, 2012.
