Book Magnetically Perturbed Plasma Confinement in a Toroidal Octupole Including Obstacle Influence

Download or read book Magnetically Perturbed Plasma Confinement in a Toroidal Octupole Including Obstacle Influence written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Permanent-magnet dipole perturbations were positioned outside the external conducting wall of a pulsed, shearless toroidal octupole plasma containment device. Floating potential profiles and losses were studied for two perturbation configurations; field lines were either closed within the plasma containment zone or were drawn outside the containment zone. Profiles were not affected by the former configuration but were altered when the field lines were drawn outside the containment zone. The extent of the profile change was enhanced when the azimuthal anti E x anti B drifts were suppressed by the presence of obstacle-like internal ring supports. With the anti E x anti B drifts suppressed, the incidence of repetitive encounters was increased between transit particles following field lines and the perturbation field. The net result was particle trajectory displacement and altered V/sub f/ profiles.

Book Plasma Containment in a Minimum B Geometry

Download or read book Plasma Containment in a Minimum B Geometry written by Charles C. Gallagher and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advantages of a toroidal plasma containment device are illustrated. Low loss rates are predicted. A toroidal magnetic field is crossed with a multi-cusp magnetic field in configurations predicted by electrolytic tank analog experiments. Three such configurations are described. The first, a relatively simple device with slowly varying fields, showed the inability of the toroidal field to penetrate a plasma and strong cusp field. The second toroid, with moderately fast fields and application of rotational transform principles, produced plasma-field separation, as evidenced by a hot, relatively dense plasma contained in a central region of reduced cusp field strength. The third toroid, featuring the fastest rising fields, produced similar though more pronounced results, including a three fold compression of a plasma heated to over 15 eV, with containment times on the order of 20 microsec. (Author).

Book Toroidal Band Limiter for a Plasma Containment Device

Download or read book Toroidal Band Limiter for a Plasma Containment Device written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invention relates to a toroidal plasma confinement device having poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields for confining a toroidal plasma column with a plasma current induced therein along an endless, circular equilibrium axis in a torus vacuum cavity wherein the improvement comprises the use of a toroidal plasma band limiter mounted within the vacuum cavity in such a manner as to ensure that the plasma energy is distributed more uniformly over the limiter surface thereby avoiding intense local heating of the limiter while at the same time substantially preventing damage to the plasma containment wall of the cavity by the energetic particles diffusing out from the confined plasma. A plurality of poloidal plasma ring limiters are also utilized for containment wall protection during any disruptive instability that might occur during operation of the device.
