This book was released on 1995 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes four field experiments carried out to assess the performance of black spruce (Picea mariana) outplants in relation to weed control (with or without), stock type (bareroot or paper pot), and planting season (spring versus summer). In one experiment, planting position (centre versus side) within mechanically site-prepared corridors was evaluated. The 1,800 seedlings planted in each of the four experiments were assessed after five and 11 growing seasons in the field (north-eastern Ontario's boreal forest region). Three of the experimental sites are on upland, mixedwood, herb-rich plots; the fourth is on a feathermoss-Sphagnum site type. Performance results are presented in terms of such factors as total height, height increment, basal diameter, mortality, and competition index.

This book was released on 1989 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To evaluate hexazinone's potential as a site preparation tool for establishing black spruce on productive upland boreal sites in northern Ontario, a cooperative study was initiated in 1979. Over 4 years, 5 experiments were begun. The study also sought to determine the delay required between chemical site preparation and planting. This report contains 5-year results from the crop-tree response portion of the study.

Book excerpt: Presents proceedings of a workshop held to summarise the current state of knowledge about the ecology of boreal mixedwood forests, to discuss management philosophies for these cover types, and to present information on new research relevant to the future management of boreal mixedwoods. Topics of individual presentations include boreal forests in Ontario, the role of forest disturbance, forest management, industrial use of boreal mixedwoods, forest data bases, forest vertebrate communities, habitat quality indicators, forest microclimate, organic and nutrient removals associated with harvesting, climate change impacts, prescribed fire, silvicultural operations, harvesting methods, vegetation control, ecosystem response to disturbance, site preparation, and effects of harvesting on forest fauna.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "International Symposium on Scleroderris Canker of Conifers" held June 21-24, 1983 in Syracuse, New York was the result of mutual interest expressed by the USDA Forest Service, the Canadian Forestry Service, and the State Uni versity of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF). The Symposium was an official function of the working party canker diseases (Scleroderris), Subject group S.2.06.02 Division II IUFRO. We wish to express our thanks to the USDA Forest Service, Research and the Canadian Forestry Service for financial support of the program, and SUNY ESF for hosting the Symposium. A major research program was launched in 1977 to study the biology of the European strain as found in North America. Support for this research resulted from spec i a 1 fund ing by the Congress of the United States to the USDA Forest Service, North Central Forest Experiment Station. Most of these funds were released as cooperative research grants to universities in the Lake States and the northeast. Many of the research papers delivered at this Symposium are the direct result of these research grants. While the Symposium deliberately emphasized the North American experience 'with Gremmeniella abietina in order to provide a focus for the meeting, we were anxious that this Symposium would also include studies from other countries.

Download or read book Boreal Forests in the Face of Climate Change written by Miguel Montoro Girona and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-01 with total page 859 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book explores a new conceptual framework for the sustainable management of the boreal forest in the face of climate change. The boreal forest is the second-largest terrestrial biome on Earth and covers a 14 million km2 belt, representing about 25% of the Earth’s forest area. Two-thirds of this forest biome is managed and supplies 37% of global wood production. These forests also provide a range of natural resources and ecosystem services essential to humanity. However, climate change is altering species distributions, natural disturbance regimes, and forest ecosystem structure and functioning. Although sustainable management is the main goal across the boreal biome, a novel framework is required to adapt forest strategies and practices to climate change. This collaborative effort draws upon 148 authors in summarizing the sustainable management of these forests and detailing the most recent experimental and observational results collected from across the boreal biome. It presents the state of sustainable management in boreal forests and highlights the critical importance of this biome in a context of global change because of these forests' key role in a range of natural processes, including carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling, and the maintaining of biodiversity. This book is an essential read for academics, students, and practitioners involved in boreal forest management. It outlines the challenges facing sustainable boreal forest management within the context of climate change and serves as a basis for establishing new research avenues, identifying future research trends, and developing climate-adapted forest management plans.
