Book Plant Life of the Pacific World

Download or read book Plant Life of the Pacific World written by Elmer D. Merrill and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 1995-10-15 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Asian ecology book offers an overview of the plant life of the vast Pacific region. Among the topics covered are the tropical forest and jungles, the grasslands, the primary and secondary forest, and the plants of the seashores. Weeds and cultivated plants are also discussed with overviews of plant distribution and notes on specific islands and island groups. Plant Life of the Pacific World will fill a great need as an important reference source not only for the ethnobotanist but for the professional botanist and the student interested in the flora of the Pacific basin. The information it contains—adequately detailed and clearly presented—should also open the eyes of both visitors and inhabitants to the natural riches of the Pacific region.

Book excerpt: You won't find potted petunias or rigid rows of hot-pink impatiens in this gorgeous new book. Instead, Plant Life features luscious photographs of author Valerie Easton's own garden (also seen in Better Homes and Gardens magazine). Drawn from her popular column of the same name in the Seattle Times Pacific Northwest magazine, Plant Life invites the world into Easton's garden, offering readers a personal perspective from a master gardener. Organized around the 12 months, Plant Life covers a wide array of topics including climbing plants, leaves that aren't green, containers, garden paths, pests, and much more. Each chapter contains several essays -- some instructive, others philosophical -- relevant to that time of year, and features a Now in Bloom section focusing on plants at their prime and illustrated with full-color photographs.

Book Theory and models in vegetation science

Download or read book Theory and models in vegetation science written by I.C. Prentice and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: July 8 -13, 1985, an international group of scientists met in Uppsala for a symposium on the subject 'Theory and models in Vegetation science' . A volume of over 70 extended abstracts had already been published in time for the symposium (Leemans et at., 1985). That volume included contributions from nearly all of those who gave talks or presented posters at the symposium. The present volume represents the fully-refereed proceedings of the symposium and features articles by a majority of speakers, plus a handful by poster authors, and two that were sent independently to Vegetatio and seemed timely and relevant to the symposi um's theme. As organizers, we tried to bring together for the symposium people whose interests covered several key aspects of modern vegetation science: vegetation dynamics, on shorter or longer time scales; the analysis of community data, and of vegetation-environment relationships in both time and space; and the functional basis of vegetation in terms of the individual plants and plant populations that it comprises. We encouraged contributors to focus on theory and models - not necessarily mathematical models, but also conceptual models that might contribute to the development of theory and mathematical models.

Download or read book Plants Go to War written by Judith Sumner and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first botanical history of World War II, Plants Go to War examines military history from the perspective of plant science. From victory gardens to drugs, timber, rubber, and fibers, plants supplied materials with key roles in victory. Vegetables provided the wartime diet both in North America and Europe, where vitamin-rich carrots, cabbages, and potatoes nourished millions. Chicle and cacao provided the chewing gum and chocolate bars in military rations. In England and Germany, herbs replaced pharmaceutical drugs; feverbark was in demand to treat malaria, and penicillin culture used a growth medium made from corn. Rubber was needed for gas masks and barrage balloons, while cotton and hemp provided clothing, canvas, and rope. Timber was used to manufacture Mosquito bombers, and wood gasification and coal replaced petroleum in European vehicles. Lebensraum, the Nazi desire for agricultural land, drove Germans eastward; troops weaponized conifers with shell bursts that caused splintering. Ironically, the Nazis condemned non-native plants, but adopted useful Asian soybeans and Mediterranean herbs. Jungle warfare and camouflage required botanical knowledge, and survival manuals detailed edible plants on Pacific islands. Botanical gardens relocated valuable specimens to safe areas, and while remote locations provided opportunities for field botany, Trees surviving in Hiroshima and Nagasaki live as a symbol of rebirth after vast destruction.

Book Global Warming and Biological Diversity

Download or read book Global Warming and Biological Diversity written by Robert L. Peters and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biological effects of global warming should be of concern to all thinking individuals, for warming could cause profound disruption of natural ecosystems and could threaten many species with extinction. This important book--the first to discuss in detail the consequences of global warming for ecosystems--includes commentary by distinguished scientists on many aspects of this critical problem. Experts describe responses of animals and plants to previous climate changes, interactions between various environmental components (precipitation and soil chemistry, for example), and synergisms between climate change and human activities such as deforestation. They consider many specific ecosystems, including tropical forests, the deciduous forests of eastern North America, the forests of the Pacific Northwest, Mediterranean-type ecosystems in California, arctic tundra, and arctic marine systems. Offering discussions that are both factual and speculative, the volume points the way to future investigations of the implications of global warming.

Book Through Japanese Eyes

Download or read book Through Japanese Eyes written by Otto David Tolischus and published by . This book was released on 1946 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is an effort to let the Japanese speak for themselves--to let them state their case, explain their aims, expound the political, emotional, and religious imponderables behind their action ... It does claim to give a true presentation of that Japanese ideology which dominates the national life ... And as a presentation of that ideology, the statements here collected, [are] not only of Japan's militarists but also of her statesmen and intellectuals." -- From Foreword.
