Book Plant Diversity in Forests of Western Uganda and Eastern Zaire

Download or read book Plant Diversity in Forests of Western Uganda and Eastern Zaire written by Axel Dalberg Poulsen and published by Aarhus University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses on the non-woody components of tropical forests, such as herbaceous plants. It is the result of a project carried out in several forests in Western Uganda and Eastern Zaire from 1994 to 1996. The project was carried out by the Danish Centre for Tropical Biodiversity (The Botanical Museum, Copenhagen) in collaboration with several institutions in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire). Tropical forests are objects of increasing interest for their importance to the global environment. Forestry studies have so far solely been focused on trees, despite the fact that forest floor plants have the advantage of easy access. The aim of the project was to assess patterns of botanical diversity within and between forests in Western Uganda. The main emphasis was on the ground herbs, especially the ferns. The most significant output at this stage is the documentation of species. Appendices list the diversity of species for each Ugandan site.

Book Diversity and Distribution of Forest Biodiversity in Western Uganda

Download or read book Diversity and Distribution of Forest Biodiversity in Western Uganda written by David Hafashimana and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Plant diversity is quite high in western Uganda forests, affiliated to the forests of the Congo basin that are relics of the postulated late Pleistocene refugia. The diversity of both trees and vascular epiphytes is mainly influenced by Soil pH, Annual Precipitation as well as Altitude. For epiphytes, the total annual precipitation is not just important, but also its distribution throughout the year as they depend on the availability of moisture in the air around their "host trees" (phorophytes) unlike trees which can withstand longer periods of drought after establishment as their roots are in deeper soil layers where local drought may not affect them. Forests located within close proximity of permanent rivers tended to have a higher epiphyte diversity (both in species and numbers) than those that experience severe drought. Some trees are more specialized to survive in Acidic soils, while others are adapted to survive in more or less neutral soils. There was no significant difference in tree diversity between forests with highly acidic soils and those with almost neutral soils. The book is handy for Foresters, Botanists, Conservationists and Naturalists

Book African Insectivora and Elephant shrews

Download or read book African Insectivora and Elephant shrews written by Martin E. Nicoll and published by IUCN. This book was released on 1990 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three mammalian orders, Insectivora, Scandentia, and Macroscelidea, all comprise small, terrestrial mammals that are primarily adapted to an insectivorous diet. In general, we know very little about the threats facing the African Insectivora and elephant-shrews. However, the little we know suggests that they tend to be at risk from habitat modification, rather than from direct exploitation of the species themselves. Both on the African mainland and on Madagascar there are several centres of exceptional diversity and endemism for these species. These centres are identified in this Action Plan, and the principal conservation priority is the maintenance of sufficient areas of suitable habitat in these centres.
