Book Postharvest Biotechnology of Flowers and Ornamental Plants

Download or read book Postharvest Biotechnology of Flowers and Ornamental Plants written by Dattajirao K. Salunkhe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The floricultural industry has been undergoing an unprecedented revolu tion in terms of the type of commodity produced and the production and marketing technology in both developed and developing countries. As a result of this revolution, as we know today, there is a flower for every purpose and for every person in the world, as is evident from the slogan of the Society for American Florists: "say it with flowers". In re cent years, the Latin American and European countries have become sizeable competitors for the North American fresh flower markets and the trend continues growing. Like any other crop production, floricultural production can be divided into three basic factors: (1) production costs (2) quality (3) transportation costs. All these must be optimum for this area or industry to be safe from competition. With increasing consumer awareness and the current recession, the pressure from the artificial floral products in dustry and also of neighbouring countries on the American fresh flower industry, and continued competition even amongst the growers, whole salers and retailers, quality in floricultural industry is becoming increas ingly important to all those concerned with handling these products. The visual quality aspects of the product are the sole determiner of consumer acceptability in this industry and, unlike fruits and vegetables, flowers cannot be marketed by just discarding the damaged portion.

Book Biotechnology of Ornamental Plants

Download or read book Biotechnology of Ornamental Plants written by R. L. Geneve and published by Cabi. This book was released on 1997 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ornamental plants include herbaceous plants produced as bedding plants, greenhouse pot plants and cut flowers, as well as bulbs, trees, shrubs and vines. Ornamental plant production is of major and increasing importance worldwide. Basic scientific research in recent years has provided a better understanding of plant regeneration, genetics, growth and development. This has led to the development of technologies which can significantly improve ornamental species. This book reviews recent advances in the biotechnology of ornamentals. For example, genes have recently been identified for flower characteristics and pest resistance and these have been engineered into ornamental species. The book is divided into four main parts and is written by authors from the USA, UK, Canada, Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand. It is aimed primarily at workers in horticulture and plant biotechnology, but will also be of interest to plant physiologists, geneticists and molecular biologists.

Book Micropropagation of Ornamental Plants

Download or read book Micropropagation of Ornamental Plants written by Taoufik Bettaieb and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Micropropagation through an in vitro culture technique is a reliable biotechnological tool that holds a better scope and future for the propagation of numerous economically prominent ornamentals, including those having value in the foliage and flowering plants industry. As a lucrative alternative approach to conventional propagation, micropropagation is a highly refined, well-developed and suitable method to produce a large scale of progeny plants which are genetically identical to the stock plant in a short time. Micropropagation of ornamental plants is increasingly and continuously involved in the scientific progress of plant biotechnology and has a relevant horticultural impact. Accordingly, a new book on micropropagation of ornamental plants is always required. Microprpagation of Ornamental Plants: Research and Practice consists of nine chapters divided into four sections authored by experienced and prestigious authors from different parts of the globe. The editor and authors are recognized as eminent scientists in their fields, and they add the quality and credibility to the content. Each chapter is illustrated and attempts to convey the practical as well as the theoretical aspects of microproparagtion. This anthology combines smartly refined micropropagation protocols of a considerable number of economically important ornamental species. Furthermore, the book will serve as a reference for horticulturists, researchers, lecturers, and students in horticulture, agriculture and biotechnology.

Book From Functional Genomics to Biotechnology in Ornamental Plants

Download or read book From Functional Genomics to Biotechnology in Ornamental Plants written by Swee-Suak Ko and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-07-12 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries plants of a broad taxonomical background have been bred and commercialized because of the beauty of their flowers. However, until recently genomic analyses of ornamentals remained a challenge because of their large genome sizes and high ploidy levels. In the last decade, increasingly affordable sequencing technologies and powerful bioinformatic approaches resulted in the complete sequencing of several horticultural species genomes and the characterization of their transcriptomes. These developments enabled research on many challenging topics. This Research Topic gives you a primer into them by featuring a broad range of original research contributions on some of the most active areas of ornamental plant research: the genetic basis of flower morphology, scent, and color, the genetic regulation of physiology as well as the epigenetic factors affecting vegetative development. In this context, one of the most significant hurdles to functional genetic studies in ornamentals is achieving efficient genetic transformation. Several articles in this Research Topic describe strategies to tackle this challenge and present insights into the way transgene activity renders novel flower phenotypes.

Download or read book Ornamental Crops written by Johan Van Huylenbroeck and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-25 with total page 888 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ornamental plants are economically important worldwide. Both growers and consumers ask continuously for new, improved varieties. Although there are numerous ornamental species, ornamental plant breeding and plant breeding research is mainly limited to some major species. This book focuses on the recent advances and achievements in ornamental plant breeding. The first part of the book focuses on plant traits and breeding techniques that are typical for ornamental plants. Eminent research groups write these general chapters. For plant traits like flower colour or shape, breeding for disease resistance and vase or shelf life are reviewed. General technical plant breeding chapters deal with mutation breeding, polyploidisation, in vitro breeding techniques and new developments in molecular techniques. The second part of the book consists of crop-specific chapters. Here all economically major ornamental species are handled together with selected representative species from different plant groups (cut flowers, pot plants, woody ornamental plants). In these crop-specific chapters, the main focus is on recent scientific achievements over the last decade.

Book Breeding For Ornamentals Classical and Molecular Approaches

Download or read book Breeding For Ornamentals Classical and Molecular Approaches written by A. Vainstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book we bring together the most up-to-date information on developments, both basic and applied, that already have or are expected to impact the field of ornamental breeding. These include classical and molecular techniques, traditional and high-throughput approaches and future trends. Since not only professional scientists, but also thousands of future scientists/students as well as amateur breeders around the world contribute heavily to the field of ornamental breeding, an introductory section dealing with the basics of molecular and classical genetics and the evolution of floral diversity is included. This should enable the reader to bridge the gap between traditional and molecular genetics. Classical approaches to the creation/selection of genetic variability, including mutation and tissue culture-aided breeding, are presented. Processes affecting ornamental and agronomic traits at the molecular level are delineated, along with an in-depth analysis of developments in the protection of intellectual property rights. The thoughts and strategies of molecular and classical geneticists, which are not always complementary or even compatible, are presented side by side in this book, and will serve to spark the imaginations of breeders as well as students entering the exciting world of state-of-the-art ornamentals.
