This book was released on 2002 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines the Government's proposals to reform the planning system as announced in a Green Paper published in December 2001 ('Planning: Delivering a fundamental change', DTLR 2001). The Committee acknowledges that the current system needs to be reformed in order that decisions on planning applications can be reached more quickly and so that local authority plans are prepared and revised more simply and speedily. However, the Government's proposals are found to overlook the strengths of current planning process, which acts as a brokering mechanism between competing interests in deciding how land and buildings should be used. The present system commands public confidence because it affords a fair hearing at all stages of the process. The proposals are judged to prove unworkable as a whole and likely to result in a more contentious, expensive, uncertain and time-consuming system. In particular, the case for Business Planning Zones is fundamentally misconceived. The Committee concludes that the current planning system, based on over 50 years of experience, should be modernised through gradual reform, and highlights the need for greater staff and resources.

It is widely recognised as a valuable resource in our towns and cities and it is therefore crucial to understand, create, protect and manage this resource. This Handbook sets the context for green infrastructure as a means to make urban environments more resilient, sustainable, liveable and equitable. Including state-of-the-art reviews that summarise the existing knowledge as well as research findings, this Handbook provides current evidence for the beneficial impact of green infrastructure on health, environmental quality and the economy. It discusses the planning and design of green infrastructure as a strategic network down to the individual features in a neighbourhood and looks at the process of green infrastructure implementation, emphasising the importance of collaboration across multiple professions and sectors. This comprehensive volume operates at multiple spatial scales, from strategic networks at the regional level to individual features in neighbourhoods, with international case studies used throughout to illustrate key examples of good practice. This collection of expert contributions will be invaluable to students and academics in the fields of planning, urban studies and geography. Practitioners and policy-makers will also find the policy discussion and examples enlightening.

Book The collaborating planner

Download or read book The collaborating planner written by Benjamin P. Clifford and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2013-04-24 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to understand how both specific planning and broader public sector reforms have been experienced and understood by chartered town planners working at local levels of authority across Great Britain. Each chapter outlines the reaction by professionals to reforms promoted by successive central and devolved governments over the last decade, before considering the broader issues of what this tells us about how modernization is rolled out by frontline public servants. The Collaborating Planner? fills a glaring gap in scholarship and makes ideal reading for students and researchers interested in the UK planning system.
