Download or read book Recent Advances in Planetary Meteorology written by Garry E. Hunt and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1985 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark volume assembles seven invited and original papers by well known workers in the field of planetary meteorology which, as a discipline, is now contributing to a better understanding of the Earth's atmosphere. The topics covered illustrate the current level of interaction between studies of the atmospheres of the Earth and planets. An important feature of the book is the description of planetary atmospheres on a comparative basis.

Download or read book Weather and Climate on Planets written by K Y Kondratyev and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 771 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weather and Climate on Planets discusses the problems of the meteorology of planets. Planetary meteorology is the study of the regularities of the atmospheres and their thermal regime and dynamics, specifically the properties of the planetary surfaces and the specific features of the interactions between the atmospheres and surfaces. This book contains four chapters and begins with an overview of origin and evolution of the solar system and planetary atmospheres. The introductory chapter describes some basic characteristics of planetary atmospheres, laboratory and numerical modeling of the atmospheric circulation, and the application of remote sounding. The remaining three chapters examine the weather, climate, and other meteorological aspects of planet Venus, Mars, and Jupiter. This book will be of value to meteorologists, astronomers, researchers, and students.

Download or read book Atmospheric Tidal and Planetary Waves written by Hans Volland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1988-10-31 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to the space age, meteorologists rarely paid particular attention to the height regions above the tropopause. What was known about the upper atmosphere above about 100 km came essentially from ionospheric and geomagnetic research. The region in between, presently known as the middle atmosphere, was almost terra incognita above the height reachable by balloons. It was space research that allowed for the first time direct access to middle and upper atmospheric heights. About 40 years ago, Sidney Chapman coined a new word 'aeronomy' to describe the study of these two height regions. When asked about the difference between aeronomy and meteorology, he allegedly replied: 'it is the same as between astronomy and astrology' . This mild irony indicates the preferred prejudice of many ionospheric physicists and geomagneticians in those days toward meteorology as a descriptive rather than an exact science, in spite of the presence of such giants as Carl Rossby and Hans Ertel.

Download or read book Predicting the Weather written by Katharine Anderson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-11-15 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victorian Britain, with its maritime economy and strong links between government and scientific enterprises, founded an office to collect meteorological statistics in 1854 in an effort to foster a modern science of the weather. But as the office turned to prediction rather than data collection, the fragile science became a public spectacle, with its forecasts open to daily scrutiny in the newspapers. And meteorology came to assume a pivotal role in debates about the responsibility of scientists and the authority of science. Studying meteorology as a means to examine the historical identity of prediction, Katharine Anderson offers here an engrossing account of forecasting that analyzes scientific practice and ideas about evidence, the organization of science in public life, and the articulation of scientific values in Victorian culture. In Predicting the Weather, Anderson grapples with fundamental questions about the function, intelligibility, and boundaries of scientific work while exposing the public expectations that shaped the practice of science during this period. A cogent analysis of the remarkable history of weather forecasting in Victorian Britain, Predicting the Weather will be essential reading for scholars interested in the public dimensions of science.
