Download or read book The Planet Killers written by Robert Silverberg and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This trio of early short novels by Grand Master Robert Silverberg is straight-up pulp science fiction at its finest As a young man, Robert Silverberg was a science fiction prodigy, turning out top-flight stories in the blink of an eye. Though written quickly, Silverberg’s early prose already showed evidence of the literary and imaginative qualities that would make him a giant in the field. Here are three of his best early works. In The Planet Killers, after Earth’s supercomputer calculates that the inhabitants of the planet Lurion will destroy Earth in sixty-seven years, Roy Gardner is sent to stop them—by any means necessary. In The Plot Against Earth, Special Investigator Lloyd Catton’s efforts to crack a ring of “hypnojewel” traffickers uncovers a galaxy-wide conspiracy. And in One of Our Asteroids Is Missing, when miner John Storm stakes claim to an asteroid with a king’s ransom of rare minerals, he’s set for life—or would be, if his discovery didn’t also mark him for death.
Download or read book Planetary Climates written by Andrew Ingersoll and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-08-25 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise, sophisticated introduction to planetary climates explains the global physical and chemical processes that determine climate on any planet or major planetary satellite--from Mercury to Neptune and even large moons such as Saturn's Titan. Although the climates of other worlds are extremely diverse, the chemical and physical processes that shape their dynamics are the same. As this book makes clear, the better we can understand how various planetary climates formed and evolved, the better we can understand Earth's climate history and future.
Download or read book Saturn written by James L. Martin and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First observed by Galileo, Saturn lies in the distant reaches of the solar system; it is the sixth planet, a gaseous giant between Jupiter and Uranus. It takes its name from the mythological father of Jupiter and Roman god of agriculture. Because of the famous circle of rings Saturn is one of the most well-regarded occupants of the galaxy. Despite their continuous appearance from Earth, the rings are actually space dust and debris trapped by Saturn's gravitational pull, a fact garnered from several satellite passes and telescope observations. The origin of Saturn's rings, however, remains a mystery. Apart from the rings, we also are aware of its moon system, with the most intriguing planetoid called Titan, itself having been the subject of science fiction speculation as a home to life. Saturn has been visited by Pioneer 11 and the two Voyager probes, with Cassini slated to arrive in 2004. Our study of this most intriguing planet will continue into the foreseeable future, with the hopes of resolving the mysteries it hides. This book provides a thorough and interesting overview of Saturn, from its initial observation centuries ago to the contemporary satellite fly-bys. Anyone captivated by the mysteries of space and the wonders of Saturn needs to understand the background covered here. After the overview is a substantial and carefully selected set of abstracts of literature pertaining to Saturn, with easy access then given through author, title, and subject indexes.

Download or read book An Introduction to Planetary Atmospheres written by Agustin Sanchez-Lavega and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planetary atmospheres is a relatively new, interdisciplinary subject that incorporates various areas of the physical and chemical sciences, including geophysics, geophysical fluid dynamics, atmospheric science, astronomy, and astrophysics. Providing a much-needed resource for this cross-disciplinary field, An Introduction to Planetary Atmospheres presents current knowledge on atmospheres and the fundamental mechanisms operating on them. The author treats the topics in a comparative manner among the different solar system bodies—what is known as comparative planetology. Based on an established course, this comprehensive text covers a panorama of solar system bodies and their relevant general properties. It explores the origin and evolution of atmospheres, along with their chemical composition and thermal structure. It also describes cloud formation and properties, mechanisms in thin and upper atmospheres, and meteorology and dynamics. Each chapter focuses on these atmospheric topics in the way classically done for the Earth’s atmosphere and summarizes the most important aspects in the field. The study of planetary atmospheres is fundamental to understanding the origin of the solar system, the formation mechanisms of planets and satellites, and the day-to-day behavior and evolution of Earth’s atmosphere. With many interesting real-world examples, this book offers a unified vision of the chemical and physical processes occurring in planetary atmospheres. Download or read book Of Reflections written by Carlos X. Febles and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Into a world behind mirrors where nothing is what it seems, there enter the most painstakingly unintelligible humans who do not know what to make of or do with their connections to these worlds, the Outlands and Far Outlands. Neither do the ones born with their own unique powers, in addition to their connections to these worlds—connections that happen to otherwise be mentally distanced—know initially what to make of or do with their connections. The black panthers, Incandescent, Anna, Pristine Crystal, the Caretaker of Star Syras, Neptune, Ezra Sterling, and the rest all play a part in making the virtually unprecedented and epic saga of The Far Outlands stories to cause one to simply marvel with all different and individual perspectives, for some of the characters you may not identify with while others you may feel empathetic toward or admire. The heroes’ and villains’ classifications, along with their virtues and otherwise liabilities—which some do all they can to maintain hidden or incognito from the general public—are something they must be and are later informed of, for they are not initially aware of them, some for the good and others for the worst. Eventually they will make their own minds to either use or even misuse such traits. Some of them have very abstract origins while others have very animatedly realistic origins, natures, and dispositions of which to tell and even to relate or fear. These are their stories and, additionally, my pervasive and reoccurring inspirations which I put on paper in order to deal with them better, even single-handedly. These writings, I both adore for their literary value and artfulness and abhor for their tormenting value and tragic legacy, for some of them express feelings I cannot take back after I have related or presented them.

Download or read book Mars written by Hugh H. Kieffer and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 1517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The planet Mars has been a subject of wonder for millennia, as attested by its place in mythology, by later speculation about its canals, and by the scientific and public excitement over the Viking mission. Although the scientific literature about the planet is voluminous, no comprehensive treatment of the results of modern spacecraft exploration has yet been made available. This volume fills that gap by providing a summary of what is presently known about Mars and identifying many puzzles such as polar cap variance, occurrence of dust storms, and the possible location of water. The introductory chapter cites questions, controversies, and milestones in the study of Mars, and also includes an annotated book list, basic data about the planet, and a guide to Martian seasons. A chapter on telescopic observation credits the contributions made by many amateurs that have advanced our knowledge of variations observed on Mars. A chapter on spacecraft exploration, by an American and a Russian author who have participated in all Mars missions, includes a revelation of an additional Soviet attempt. Twenty-nine technical articles cover geophysics; bedrock geology; surface; atmosphere; exosphere and magnetic field; and climate history. Two chapters address the search for life on Mars; three concluding chapters consider the Martian satellites. An indispensable reference for scientists, Mars will also serve as a complete sourcebook for serious amateur astronomers.
Download or read book Weird Weather written by David A. J. Seargent and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-02 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is, in a sense, a sequel to David Seargent's first Springer book Weird Astronomy (2010). Whereas Weird Astronomy extended over a broad range of purely astronomical topics, the present work concentrates on phenomena closer to home; the atmospheric and "shallow space" events as opposed to deep space events. The line between astronomy and meteorology is blurred - a fact that is discussed in Weird Weather. It is not primarily a book of "wonders" or of the unexplained, although some of the topics covered remain mysteries. It is primarily directed toward those who are fascinated by climate and weather, and who are open-minded when considering Earth's climate, what drives it, and what are the causes of climate change. The author, David A. J. Seargent, presents the facts with a balanced and scientific approach. Weird Weather: Tales of Astronomical and Atmospheric Anomalies is about strange, unusual, and apparently inexplicable observations of the air and sky. Primarily these are in the Earth's atmosphere, but there are corresponding phenomena in the atmospheres of other planets of the Solar System - lightning on Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn, whirlwinds and dust storms of Mars, and auroras on Jupiter. Topics include anomalous lights, anomalous sounds, spectacular effects of cloud illumination by the Sun or Moon, lightning phenomena, electrophonic sounds of lightning, aurora and meteors, tornado and whirlwind phenomena on Earth and Mars, usual atmospheric effects, mirages, and the possible astronomical influences on cloud and climate.
