Book Torture Taxi

  • Pages : 226 pages

Download or read book Torture Taxi written by Trevor Paglen and published by Icon Books Company. This book was released on 2007 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an investigative journalism in the mould of Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward. This is an incredible story of shadowy CIA kidnappings followed by imprisonment and torture. The secret may be out, but the horror remains in this original expose of extraordinary rendition. This is the incredible story of how the CIA's darkest secret of the War on Terror - the 'extraordinary rendition' programme - was exposed. It's no longer a secret: since 9/11, the CIA has quietly kidnapped more than a hundred people and detained them at prisons throughout the world. Often, the detainees are tortured or disappear entirely. Now infamous, the 'extraordinary rendition' programme is a key part of the largest clandestine operation since the end of the Cold War. In this shocking book, an award-winning investigative journalist and a 'military geographer' explore the programme in journeys around the world: to suburban Massachusetts to profile a CIA front company supplying the agency with planes; to North Carolina to track down the pilots; to the San Francisco suburbs to study with a planespotter who monitors the CIA's movements; and to Afghanistan, where they visit the notorious Salt Pit prison and interview released Afghan detainees. The kidnappings have not stopped. On the contrary, the rendition programme has been formalised, colluding with the military when necessary, and constantly changing its cover to remain hidden from sight. This is a chilling looking at the logistics of torture which shows how far Bush is prepared to go in the 'war on terror'.

Download or read book Life in the Air written by Mark Gottdiener and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2001 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not just about air travel. It is about the emergent social world of flying. It concerns air space and behavior in the air the way someone else might look at cities and street behavior. Economic, political, and cultural aspects are all considered. . . . Airports have now become specific places in their own right that, in a certain sense, now. . . are very much like cities. Frequent flying also has produced its very own culture. Rules of behavior are subscribed to in the air. Unique behaviors at terminals and in the passenger cabin have emerged that contrast with life on the ground. In chapters below I explore these interesting aspects of etiquette, eroticism, and bi-coastalism, a human activity that is only possible because of our present society's evolution. . . . Only now have we begun to appreciate our emergent global culture. The world is shrinking just as the opportunities for travel expand. -from the Introduction

Book Planespotting in The 80s

    Book Details:
  • Author : Steven Macom
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2011-01-04
  • ISBN : 9781449538316
  • Pages : 48 pages

Download or read book Planespotting in The 80s written by Steven Macom and published by . This book was released on 2011-01-04 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PLANESPOTTING IN THE 80s is a photographic and textual exploration of airliner activity in the 1980s, with particular emphasis on Philadelphia International Airport and the region. This exciting book includes images and descriptions of airlines and aircraft that have long since vanished from operation. Names like Eastern, Allegheny Commuter, TWA, Piedmont, and even Pan Am evoke memories from years past. PHL itself has grown to become today "s hive of activity for domestic and international operations on a major scale. The reality of today "s world has dampened the ability to access the vantage points once enjoyed by spotters at airports around the globe. The enthusiasm and solidarity of spotters, however, remains strong, and that spirit can be felt throughout the pages of this publication. Anyone who has an interest in aviation, an interest in travel, or an association with the region will certainly enjoy this step back in time.

Book The Role of Air Tanzania in Air Transport in East Africa

Download or read book The Role of Air Tanzania in Air Transport in East Africa written by James J. Spillane, S.J. and published by Sanata Dharma University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-05 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When President John Magufuli became the head of the Tanzanian Government in 2015, he immediately prioritized the tourism sector as a key to getting the country into the middle category of developing countries. A key player in this strategy is the Government owned Air Tanzania. It actually began in 1977 during the time of the East African Economic Community. Unfortunately, Air Tanzania has a long history of ups and downs, especially mismanagement by politicians and high corruption. Based on an extensive collection of newspaper clippings, this comprehensive book has been written on the history and experience of Air Tanzania. This material would be very helpful and valuable for other developing countries.

Book Dispatches from the Dark Side

Download or read book Dispatches from the Dark Side written by Gareth Peirce and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2012-04-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this set of devastating essays, Gareth Peirce analyzes the corruption of legal principles and practices in both the US and the UK that has accompanied the ‘War on Terror’. Exploring the few cases of torture that have come to light, such as those of Guantánamo detainees Shafiq Rasul and Binyam Mohamed, Peirce argues that they are evidence of a deeply entrenched culture of impunity among those investigating presumed radicals among British Muslim nationals and residents, who constitute the new suspect community in the UK. Peirce shows that the British government has colluded in a whole range of extrajudicial activities – rendition, internment without trial, torture – and has gone to extraordinary lengths to conceal its actions. Its devices for maintaining secrecy are probably more deep-rooted than those of any other comparable democracy. If the government continues along this path, Peirce argues, it will destroy the moral and legal fabric it claims to be protecting.
