Book excerpt: This volume explores the various facets of planaria as a biomedical model system and discusses techniques used to study the fascinating biology of these animals. The chapters in this book are divided into two parts: Part One looks at the biodiversity of planarian species, the molecular orchestration of regeneration, ecology of planarians in their natural habitats and their history as lab models. Part Two talks about experimental protocols for studying planarians, ranging from the establishment of a planarian research colony, to RNA and DNA extraction techniques, all the way to single stem cell transplantations or metabolomics analysis. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Comprehensive and cutting-edge, Planarian Regeneration: Methods and Protocols is a valuable resource for both newcomers to the field and experts within established planarian laboratories.

Book Claiming My Place Coming of Age in the Shadow of the Holocaust

Download or read book Claiming My Place Coming of Age in the Shadow of the Holocaust written by Planaria Price and published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux (BYR). This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gucia Gomolinska grew up comfortably in Piotrkow, Poland, a devoted student, sister, daughter, and friend. Still, even in the years before World War II, she faced discrimination as a Jew--but with her ash-blond hair she was often able to pass as just another Pole. When her town was invaded by Nazis, she knew her Aryan coloring gave her an advantage, and she faced an awful choice: stay in the place she had always called home, or leave behind everything she knew to try to survive. She took on a new identity as Basia Tanska, and her journey led her directly into Nazi Germany. Planaria Price, along with Basia's daughter Helen West, tells this incredible life story directly in the first person. Claiming My Place is a stunning portrayal of bravery, love, loss, and the power of storytelling.

Book Planarian Regeneration

    Book Details:
  • Author : H. V. Brøndsted
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2013-10-22
  • ISBN : 1483186296
  • Pages : 311 pages

Download or read book Planarian Regeneration written by H. V. Brøndsted and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planarian Regeneration deals with regeneration problems including embryogenesis and morphogenesis. The book compares the principles involved in the regeneration processes with those in ontogenesis from the egg. The author also reviews the works of Thomas H. Morgan and Charles M. Child which became the basis for systematic scientific investigation of regeneration. The head regenerates vigorously, with a faster rate behind the eyes, then at various levels along the longitudinal axis of the planarian body. A time-graded regeneration includes inhibitory forces and some genetic codes that determine such rate. The time-graded field has been proven by transplantation experiments; the author addresses the morphological structure to which biochemical factors or processes determine the different rate of regeneration. He notes that the nervous system conforms to these processes as shown by studies of Lender and Klein (1961). The author suggests that the study of regeneration in planarians should involve time considerations quantitatively to explain some substance, if any, from the nervous system that activates the cytoplasm of neoblasts, and then the genome. This book will prove valuable for zoologists and researchers in genetics, biochemistry or molecular biology.

Book The First Brain

    Book Details:
  • Author : Oné R. Pagán
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2014-03-18
  • ISBN : 0199965056
  • Pages : 281 pages

Download or read book The First Brain written by Oné R. Pagán and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planarians, a class of flatworm, are extraordinary: they possess the remarkable ability to regenerate lost body parts, including complete regeneration of the nervous system. If cut into pieces, each piece of the planarian can regenerate into a complete organism. They are also unique among invertebrates in that they display addiction-like behaviors to many drugs abused by humans. Because of these distinct neurological traits, the planarian is often used as an animal model in neurological research, being used most recently for developments in neuropharmacology. The First Brain is a discussion of how planarians have been used in neuropharmacology, and what role they have played in scientific developments that have a high impact on our culture. Planarians have been the animal models for research in drug addiction, antidepressant development, and various other topics in biology, neurobiology, and even zoology. Pagán uses these flatworms as a framework to explore the history of biological research. The book provides accessible background information on how biomedical research is impacted by evolution, and defines neurobiology and neuropharmacology in ways that are easy to understand. At the same time, Pagán provides enough detail for the book to useful for scientists working in various subsections of biology. The planarian has played a key role in the history biological, neuropharmacological, and zoological research, and has even made appearances in a few unexpected places in popular culture. Oné Pagán explores all these roles, and shows us why the planarian truly is one of the most extraordinary and influential organisms in scientific research today.
