Book excerpt: This terminal evaluation covers the project "Mainstreaming ecosystem-based approaches to climate-resilient rural livelihoods in vulnerable rural areas through the farmer field school (FFS) methodology", funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The overall performance of the project is moderately satisfactory. The project is relevant in its response to climate change adaptation needs in Senegal. It is coherent in its design and is in phase with the Plan Senegal Emergent (PSE). The evaluation found that the project has contributed to capacity building of institutional actors and farmers organizations on climate change adaptation, resilience and gender equity. Notable results include: capacity building of technicians, relay producers, farmers and agro-pastoralists on good practices of adaptation to climate change, through the field-school approach; the establishment of a climate resilience fund that has allowed to finance micro-projects in rural area; the dissemination of agro-climatic information; trainings on adapted climate change practices at the farmfer field school (FFS) and agropastoral field school (APFS) level.

Book excerpt: The study allowed us to understand that the urban vegetation of Kinshasa has been declining over the years, especially in the neighborhoods of the old municipalities and a slow progression in the new neighborhoods of the peripheral municipalities. This general downward trend should bring us awareness so that we can maintain and protect the existing urban vegetation. This downward trend can be explained by the fact that the area occupied by the constructions in the plots becomes larger and larger, that is to say that over the years, the old constructions from the beginning during the the acquisition of the plots disappear in favor of new larger and more comfortable constructions in the plots. Moreover, at the beginning of the birth of the district, the owners are mainly interested in planting the trees in the plot, but as the district ages, the urban vegetation becomes dense and the interest of planting other trees are no longer justified. It is also a regrettable fact to note that no tree has been detected in the streets of African neighborhoods and this because of the narrowness of the streets or a simple omission of the town planner, who has not made the relevant arrangements during the development of these districts. Planting a fruit tree in your plot is a profitable initiative as the fruits are an important source of nutrients. In this case, the fruit tree not only provides fruit but also provides shade and also improves the living environment in the plot.

Part of the reason is that emissions in two provinces, Alberta and Saskatchewan – already about half the Canadian total when taken together – have been steadily increasing as a result of expanding oil and gas production. Declining emissions in other provinces, such as Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick, have been cancelled out by those western increases. The ultimate explanation for Canadian failure lies in the differing energy interests of the western and eastern provinces, overlaid on the confederation fault-line of western alienation. Climate, energy, and national unity form a toxic mix. How can Ottawa possibly get all the provinces moving in the same direction of decreasing emissions? To answer this question, Douglas Macdonald explores the five attempts to date to put in place coordinated national policy in the fields of energy and climate change – from Pierre Trudeau’s ill-fated National Energy Program to Justin Trudeau’s bitterly contested Pan-Canadian program – analysing and comparing them for the first time. Important new insights emerge from this analysis which, in turn, provide the basis for a new approach.
