Book Plague and Pestilence in Literature and Art Classic Reprint

Download or read book Plague and Pestilence in Literature and Art Classic Reprint written by Raymond Crawfurd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plague and Pestilence in Literature and Art This volume represents substantially the F itzpatrick Lectures which I had the privilege of delivering at the Royal College of Physicians in 1912. Originally I intended to do no more than gather together into a succinct record the various memorials and reminders of Pestilence that I had met with in my wanderings at home and abroad and in my casual incursions into general literature. Insensibly the desire to understand supplanted the desire merely to record, and the desire to explain superseded the endeavour to understand. I have turned my attention, as far as practicable, only to the literary and artistic associations of Pestilence, but these have inevitably overlapped the confines of history and of medical science. The latter territory has been invaded only so far as was necessary to ensure a correct orientation to the inquiry. I have thought it wise to let the curtain fall at the end of the eighteenth century, leaving it to my readers to decide what vestiges of the mentality of distant centuries have survived into this twentieth. A little reflection on this will afford a most salutary lesson to all of us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Saint Paul's: A Tale of the Plague and the Fire It is characteristic of Defoe that he rejects, with all the sober gravity of the historian the tale that the blind piper started his music in the cart, and so frightened the bearers away. He even denies that the piper was blind - he was only an ignorant, weak, poor man, playing his pipes from door to door and finding custom especially at the public-houses where they knew him and would give him drink and victuals, and sometimes farthings. Defoe's is the method of the Dutch painters, an absolute fidelity to every detail, no matter how commonplace or grotesque it may be. Ainsworth as a disciple of the romantic school has no such scruples his piper is blind, and is provided with a faithful dog, and a beautiful damsel whose father he is supposed to be, but who is in reality the daughter of a nobleman. The pestilence of 1665, as it was the last so it was the greatest of the plagues by which London had been afflicted, not even excepting the Black Death of 1349. This interdisciplinary study on disease in metaphysical context is the first general overview of plague art written from an art-historical standpoint. The book selects masterpieces created by Raphael, Titian, Tintoretto, Rubens, Van Dyck, and Poussin, and includes minor works dating from the fourteenth to twentieth centuries. It highlights the most important innovative artistic works that originated during the Renaissance and the Catholic Reformation. Book Plague Pestilence and Pandemic Voices from History

Download or read book Plague Pestilence and Pandemic Voices from History written by Peter Furtado and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An eye-opening anthology from the bestselling editor of Histories of Nations, exploring how people around the globe have suffered and survived during plague and pandemic, from the ancient world to the present. Plague, pestilence, and pandemics have been a part of the human story from the beginning and have been reflected in art and writing at every turn. Humankind has always struggled with illness; and the experiences of different cities and countries have been compared and connected for thousands of years. Many great authors have published their eyewitness accounts and survivor stories of the great contagions of the past. When the great Muslim traveler Ibn Battuta visited Damascus in 1348 during the great plague, which went on to kill half of the population, he wrote about everything he saw. He reported, "God lightened their affliction; for the number of deaths in a single day at Damascus did not attain 2,000, while in Cairo it reached the figure of 24,000 a day." From the plagues of ancient Egypt recorded in Genesis to those like the Black Death that ravaged Europe in the Middle Ages, and from the Spanish flu of 1918 to the Covid-19 pandemic in our own century, this anthology contains fascinating accounts. Editor Peter Furtado places the human experience at the center of these stories, understanding that the way people have responded to disease crises over the centuries holds up a mirror to our own actions and experiences. Plague, Pestilence and Pandemic includes writing from around the world and highlights the shared emotional responses to pandemics: from rage, despair, dark humor, and heartbreak, to finally, hope that it may all be over. By connecting these moments in history, this book places our own reactions to the Covid-19 pandemic within the longer human story.
