Book British Pixies

Download or read book British Pixies written by John Kruse and published by Green Magic. This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pixies are the faery folk of the South West of England, by which I mean Cornwall, Devon and the western part of Somerset (essentially Exmoor, the Quantocks and the Blackdown Hills). Beyond this area, moving into northern and eastern Somerset and into Dorset, it is far more common to speak of fairies. Pixies came to wider attention through the work of a handful of authors. Before that, they had been well-known within the south-west, and local people had speculated about their origins over centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elliot thought Goblins were scary—until he gets caught in a fight between the Fairies and a Pixie Princess An entire floor of St. Phobics Hospital for Really Scared Children has been set aside just for readers of this book. You may wish to take a minute before you start reading and reserve yourself a bed there. As you read, you may begin to understand myctophobia (mic-tofo-be-a), or the fear of darkness. However, do not expect this book to help you with arachibutyrophobia (a-rak-i-something-be-a), the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth. If you can't get yourself to St. Phobics, then get every lamp, flashlight, and lantern you can find and drag them into your bedroom. Turn them all on. You'll need them until you're certain there is nothing lurking in the dark. At least, that's what Elliot wishes he had done.

Book excerpt: CHAPTER I. THE PIXIES’ PARLOUR Phoebe Lyddon frowned, and, as an instant protest, twin dimples peeped into life at the left corner of her bonny mouth. In regarding that attractive ripple the down-drawn eyebrows were forgotten until they rose again into their natural arches. A sweet, childish contour of face chimed with her expression; her full lips were bright as the bunch of ripe wood-strawberries at the breast of her cotton gown; her eyes as grey as Dartmoor mists; while, for the rest, a little round chin, a small, straight nose, and a high forehead, which Phoebe mourned and kept carefully concealed under masses of curly brown hair, were the sole features to be specially noted about her. She was a trifle below the standard of height proper to a girl of nineteen, but all compact, of soft, rounded lines, plump, fresh of colour, healthy, happy, sweet as a ripe apple. From a position upon swelling hillsides above the valley of a river, she scanned the scene beneath, made small her eyes to focus the distance, and so pursued a survey of meadow and woodland, yet without seeing what she sought. Beneath and beyond, separated from her standpoint by grasslands and a hedge of hazel, tangled thickets of blackthorn, of bracken, and of briar sank to the valley bottom. Therein wound tinkling Teign through the gorges of Fingle to the sea; and above it, where the land climbed upward on the other side, spread the Park of Whiddou, with expanses of sweet, stone-scattered herbage, with tracts of deep fern, coverts of oak, and occasional habitations for the deer.

Book excerpt: The warm, mellow September sunshine was streaming over the irregular roofs and twisted chimneys of the little town of Chagmouth, and was glinting on the water in the harbour, and sending gleaming, straggling, silver lines over the deep reflections of the shipping moored by the side of the jetty. The rising tide, lapping slowly and gently in from the ocean, was floating the boats beached on the shingle, and was gradually driving back the crowd of barefooted children who had ventured out in search of mussels, and was sending them, shrieking with mirth, scampering up the seaweed-covered steps that led to the fish market. On the crag-top above the town the corn had been cut, and harvesters were busy laying the sheaves together in stooks. The yellow fields shone in the afternoon light as if the hill were crowned with gold.

Book A PEEP AT THE PIXIES 6 of the most popular Pixie tales from Dartmoor

Download or read book A PEEP AT THE PIXIES 6 of the most popular Pixie tales from Dartmoor written by Anon E. Mouse and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-09-26 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been said since ancient times that Dartmoor is the haunt of the Pixies. In this volume you will find 6 illustrated children’s stories, told in full, about the Pixies of Dartmoor which go some way to explaining who the Pixies are and what they get up to when young heads start to rest heavily on pillows and the Sandman is about spreading his sleep dust. These are the 6 most popular tales about Pixies which are being told in Cornwall and Devon to this day. They Are: Pixy Gathon; or, The Tailor's Needle The Three Trials; or, The Story of Crabby Cross The Seven Crosses of Tiverton; or, The Story of Pixy Picket Fontina; or, The Pixies' Bath The Lady of The Silver Bell The Belfry Rock; or, The Pixies' Revenge But why did they choose Dartmoor? In this most pleasant part of England, there are many hills and rivers, with plenty of woods, and fields, hedgerows, birds, and flowers - and a large tract of country called Dartmoor, where the hills are so high that some of them are like mountains, with a number of beautiful sparkling streams and waterfalls, and a great many rocks, some standing alone, and others piled on the top of the heights in such odd ways, that they look like the ruins of castles and towers built by the giants in the olden time - these are called Tors. They are so lofty that the clouds often hang upon them and hide their heads. And what with its being so large and lonely, and having very few trees, except in one or two spots near a river, Dartmoor is altogether, though a wild, a very grand place. In short it is the ideal place for Pixies to take up residence. Many a Pixy is sent out at night on works of mischief to deceive the old nurses and steal away young children, or to do them harm. This is noticed' poet Ben Jonson who wrote:-- "Under a cradle I did creep By day, and, when the childe was asleep At night, I suck'd the breath, and rose And pluck'd the nodding nurse by the nose." Many Pixies are solely bent on mischief and are sent forth to lead poor travellers a fine dance when trudging home through woods, water, bogs and quagmires. If ever you are there late at night, beware of the light from the Will-o-the Wisp, for it may be a mischievous Pixie intent on having fun at your expense. Not many have really seen a Pixie house. It is often said to be in a rock; sometimes, however, a mole hill is a palace for the elves, or a hollow nut cracked by the "joiner squirrel," will contain the majesty of Pixy-land. Drayton describes their royal dwellings thus: "The walls of spiders' legs are made, Well morticed and finely laid, He was the master of his trade It curiously that builded; The windows of the eyes of cats, And for a roof, instead of slats, Is covered with the skins of bats, With moonshine that are gilded." And now, young friends, having been told that the wild wastes of Dartmoor, are said to be much haunted by Pixies, proceed to these stories which we trust will afford you some amusement in those hours not devoted to your lessons, or to more serious studies. Book Monitress Merle A School Story

Download or read book Monitress Merle A School Story written by Angela Brazil and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Monitress Merle” is a charming and highly-entertaining story revolving around the coming-of-age of Mavis and Merle Ramsay, two sisters who both attend a traditional English boarding school called 'The Moorings.' Written by the master of schoolgirls' fiction, this a book that will appeal to young girls and those with an interest in traditional English schooling. Angela Brazil (1868 – 1947) was an English author most famous for being one of the first writers of "modern schoolgirls' stories". Her stories were presented from the characters' point of view and were written primarily as entertainment rather than moral instruction. During the first half of the 20th century, Brazil published nearly 50 such books, with the vast majority being set in English boarding schools. Brazil's work had a significant influence on changing the nature of fiction for girls. Her charters were chiefly young females, active, independent, and aware. Brazil's books were often considered to be immoral and deviant, leading to their being burned or banned by many Headteachers in girls schools across Britain. Other notable works by this author include: “The School in the Forest” (1944), “Three Terms at Uplands” (1945), “The School on the Loch” (1946). Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.
