Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pittsburgh on Your Plate is more than just a cookbook. It's a journey. It is filled with over 175 recipes and stories that define the city, its people, and its culture. Pittsburgh is a city founded and formed by hardworking immigrant families. It is a city proud to say that all people were and always are welcome. As the city evolved over the past several hundred years, so did its cuisine. The ethnic food became part of who we are. It defines our lives, celebrates our family times, and honors our traditions. These are recipes that have been handed down from generation to generation and gathered over the years from my family, my husband's family, and many close friends. Most were on handwritten recipe cards, in worn notebooks, and penciled on scraps of paper stuck in cookbooks, all kept so dear. Recipes run the spectrum from those from my own "numbers-running bookie," pickle-packing Grandma Mary to the special Pittsburgh cookie table section featuring thirty of my favorite cookie table cookies. Italian, German, Polish, and many more recipes exemplify the food Pittsburgh loves. Its stories will make you chuckle, raise a brow, and warm your heart. Family tales, ethnic lore, historic and city anecdotes embrace what it is to be part of this wonderful, unique black and gold Yinzer city of Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh on Your Plate is waiting for you to enjoy the food world of our hometown. Yinz know...that city where the three rivers meet "dahntahn" and "them Stillers" play!

Download or read book Workers and Welfare written by Michelle L. Dion and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2010-02-28 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the revolutionary period of 1910-1920, Mexico developed a number of social protection programs to support workers in public and private sectors and to establish safeguards for the poor and the aged. These included pensions, healthcare, and worker's compensation. The new welfare programs were the product of a complex interrelationship of corporate, labor, and political actors. In this unique dynamic, cross-class coalitions maintained both an authoritarian regime and social protection system for some seventy years, despite the ebb and flow of political and economic tides. By focusing on organized labor, and its powerful role in effecting institutional change, Workers and Welfare chronicles the development and evolution of Mexican social insurance institutions in the twentieth century. Beginning with the antecedents of social insurance and the adoption of pension programs for central government workers in 1925, Dion's analysis shows how the labor movement, up until the 1990s, was instrumental in expanding welfare programs, but has since become largely ineffective. Despite stepped-up efforts, labor has seen the retrenchment of many benefits. Meanwhile, Dion cites the debt crisis, neoliberal reform, and resulting changes in the labor market as all contributing to a rise in poverty. Today, Mexican welfare programs emphasize poverty alleviation, in a marked shift away from social insurance benefits for the working class.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The selection of Mr. Fleming to prepare this history of Pittsburgh, and the region round about, was most fortunate for the city. He was not only a sturdy grubber after facts but had the ability to dress them up in pleasing style and set them in graceful order. This book is valuable not only as a narrative of historic events, but as a compendium of facts relating to men and matters, events and happenings pertaining to the triumphant growth of Pittsburgh, its institutions, and its fame. It is as encyclopedic as entertaining and facilitates the finding of whatsoever data that may be desired. It will be very hard to find another book on the history of Pittsburgh that is as detailed as Mr. Fleming’s. This is volume one out of two.

Download or read book Nowa Huta written by Kinga Pozniak and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2014-11-07 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1949 construction of the planned town of Nowa Huta began on the outskirts of Krakow, Poland. Its centerpiece, the Lenin Steelworks, promised a secure future for workers and their families. By the 1980s, however, the rise of the Solidarity movement and the ensuing shock therapy program of the early 1990s rapidly transitioned the country from socialism to a market-based economy, and like many industrial cities around the world Nowa Huta fell on hard times. Kinga Pozniak shows how the remarkable political, economic, and social upheavals since the end of the Second World War have profoundly shaped the historical memory of these events in the minds of the people who lived through them. Through extensive interviews, she finds three distinct, generationally based framings of the past. Those who built the town recall the might of local industry and plentiful jobs. The following generation experienced the uprisings of the 1980s and remembers the repression and dysfunction of the socialist system and their resistance to it. Today's generation has no direct experience with either socialism or Solidarity, yet as residents of Nowa Huta they suffer the stigma of lower-class stereotyping and marginalization from other Poles. Pozniak examines the factors that lead to the rewriting of history and the formation of memory, and the use of history to sustain current political and economic agendas. She finds that despite attempts to create a single, hegemonic vision of the past and a path for the future, these discourses are always contested—a dynamic that, for the residents of Nowa Huta, allows them to adapt as their personal experience tells them.
