Book Spring Miscellany

Download or read book Spring Miscellany written by Soseki Natsume and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12-20 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, English readers have access to Soseki’s Spring Miscellany. Originally published as Eijitu Shohin in serial form in the Asahi newspaper in 1909, before appearing in book form, Spring Miscellany is an pastiche of twenty-five sketches, referred to as shohin (little items), heir to the great zuihitsu tradition of discursive prose. These personal vignettes are clearly autobiographical and reveal Soseki’s kaleidoscopic view of his private world and his interest in authentic, unadorned self-expression. The stories range from from episodes from his youth to his adult musings. Of special interest are the accounts of Soseki’s stay in England between 1900 and 1902, where he attended University College, studied privately with W. J. Craig, editor of the Arden Shakespeare, and immersed himself in studying eighteenth-century literature. It was not a happy time for Soseki--he described his stay as “like a poor dog that had wandered into the company of wolves”--but, as with all great writers, he managed to turn adversity into raw material for his art and to give us insight today into the life of an expatriate Japanese scholar at the turn of the century. In his Introduction to the work, Sammy Tsunematsu, founder and curator of the Soseki Museum in London, provides a fresh perspective on Soseki as a man and a writer, as well as an insightful commentary on the work itself.

  • Publisher : Troubador Publishing Ltd
  • Release : 2018-11-20

Download or read book Pitlochry s Secret War written by Robert O. Scott and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is mainly set in and around the small Perthshire town of Pitlochry during the Second World War. It gives an accurate picture of wartime civilian life with all the irksome restrictions of the severe food rationing and many other grim shortages. This terrible war is seen through the eyes of some ageing parents whose young sons and daughters are serving in Britain’s Armed Forces and face the constant threat of sudden death. For six long years of this endless seeming war these anxious parents had lived in fear that one fateful day they would receive that dreaded telegram from the War Office, the Admiralty or the Air Ministry informing them that their soldier, sailor or airman son had been killed in action! For three of these aging fathers, old friends who had survived the horrors of Flanders in the First World War, this apparently remote Second World War suddenly erupted with dramatic force and violent death in the heart of what had almost seemed a tranquil rural scene. Then the immediate post-war years bring huge changes to Pitlochry.

Book Way of the Wanderers

Download or read book Way of the Wanderers written by Jess Smith and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2012-11-05 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “vigorous and vivid and feisty” portrait of a traditional Scottish subculture from an insider (Dundee Courier & Advertiser). Scottish gypsies, known as travellers, have wandered Scotland’s roads and byways for centuries, and their turbulent history is captured in this passionate book by Jess Smith, the bestselling author of Jessie’s Journey. This is less a conventional history than a personal pilgrimage through the stories, songs, and culture of a people for whom freedom is more important than security and a campfire under the stars is preferable to a warm hearth within stone walls. Settled society has always discriminated against travellers, and Jess tells shocking stories of bullying, violence, the enforced break-up of families, and separate schooling. But drawing on her own and her family’s experiences, she also captures the magic and drama of days wandering the roads and working the land, and brings to life the travellers’ rich and vibrant traditions.

Book The Souterrains of Southern Pictland

Download or read book The Souterrains of Southern Pictland written by F.T. Wainwright and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The archaeological monuments known as souterrains, particularly characteristic of eastern Scotland from Aberdeenshire to Fife, have long been a mystery. When this book was originally published in 1963, recent investigation on two of these types of works, at Ardestie and Carlungie in Angus had shed more light. This book combines two excavation reports with a re-consideration of the problems that surrounded these ‘earth houses’ and their builders. It presents a summary of all recorded souterrains between the Dee and the Forth, offering great insight into these structures and also into the status of this kind of archaeology at this time.

Book The Lore of Scotland

Download or read book The Lore of Scotland written by Sophia Kingshill and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-08-30 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scotland's rich past and varied landscape have inspired an extraordinary array of legends and beliefs, and in The Lore of Scotland Jennifer Westwood and Sophia Kingshill bring together many of the finest and most intriguing: stories of heroes and bloody feuds, tales of giants, fairies, and witches, and accounts of local customs and traditions. Their range extends right across the country, from the Borders with their haunting ballads, via Glasgow, site of St Mungo's miracles, to the fateful battlefield of Culloden, and finally to the Shetlands, home of the seal-people. More than simply retelling these stories, The Lore of Scotland explores their origins, showing how and when they arose and investigating what basis - if any - they have in historical fact. In the process, it uncovers the events that inspired Shakespeare's Macbeth, probes the claim that Mary King's Close is the most haunted street in Edinburgh, and examines the surprising truth behind the fame of the MacCrimmons, Skye's unsurpassed bagpipers. Moreover, it reveals how generations of Picts, Vikings, Celtic saints and Presbyterian reformers shaped the myriad tales that still circulate, and, from across the country, it gathers together legends of such renowned figures as Sir William Wallace, St Columba, and the great warrior Fingal. The result is a thrilling journey through Scotland's legendary past and an endlessly fascinating account of the traditions and beliefs that play such an important role in its heritage.

Download or read book Caleb s List written by Kellan MacInnes and published by Luath Press Ltd. This book was released on 2013-07-22 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the 2013 Saltire Society Scottish First Book award. Edinburgh. 1898. On the cusp of the modern age. Caleb George Cash: mountaineer, geographer, antiquarian and teacher stands at the rocky summit of Arthur's Seat. This is the story of Caleb, me and the Scottish mountains visible from Arthur's Seat. Somehow the Cashs or the Calebs didn't sound right so I have called the hills on Caleb's list The Arthurs. More than just a climbing book this is the story of a survivor. Caleb's List is a beautifully descriptive account in which Kellan MacInnes intertwines his own personal struggle with HIV with the life story of Victorian mountaineer Caleb George Cash, beginning with the moment in 1898 when Caleb stood at the top of Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh and made a list of 20 mountains visible from its summit, from Ben Lomond in the west to Lochnager in the east. MacInnes stumbled upon this long forgotten list of hills, now dubbed the Arthurs, and in this book he sets a new hillwalking challenge ... climbing the Arthurs. Drawing on history, literature and personal experience, MacInnes offers both practical and emotional insight into climbing these hills, in an account that is a must-read for hillwalkers, visitors to Edinburgh and lovers of Scotland all over the world. This is not just a book about hillwalking and history. At its heart this is powerful landscape writing that explores the strong bond between a person and the hills they love . . . The author writes with skill and considerable authority. ALEX RODDIE, author Caleb Cash himself is an important if neglected figure in the history of the Scottish outdoors and the author's personal story gives the book an emotional power unusual in a guidebook. An excellent book. CHRIS TOWNSHEND, author A triumphant debut. THE GREAT OUTDOORS A tribute to the healing power of the Scottish landscape and to survival against the odds. THE SCOTSMAN
