Download or read book Hard Crabs and Cultured Pearls written by Jane Vincent and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-08 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When real estate agent Diana Sullivan, raised in affluent in Chevy Chase, steps from her car onto the gravel parking lot of Mattingly's General Store in June 1957, she enters an unfamiliar world--the isolated and rural 7th District of St. Mary's County in Southern Maryland. As she walks toward the store seeking directions, she is jostled by a young man. While Harry helps Diana retrieve the scattered contents of her purse, he gives her a preview of the local vernacular and mannerisms. Although Diana leaves the young waterman in anger after this volatile first meeting, she will welcome Harry's assistance later in the day. In time, Diana grows to love Harry, his family, and the region's culture. She enjoys the warmth and acceptance of the locals, a tightly knit community of watermen and tobacco farmers, many of whose families' roots extent back to Southern Maryland's colonial days. However, she knows that her upper-class family would disapprove of her involvement with these rural people. Soon, critical external pressures buffet the cocoon that Diana and Harry have spun around their relationship, causing the two lovers to question whether their love can survive.

Book The Book of the Pearl

  • Author : George Frederick Kunz
  • Publisher : DigiCat
  • Release : 2022-07-21
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 604 pages

Download or read book The Book of the Pearl written by George Frederick Kunz and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-07-21 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The preparation of this book has been a joint labor during the spare moments of the two authors, whose time has been occupied with subjects to which pearls are not wholly foreign—one as a gem expert, and the other in the fisheries branch of the American government. For many years the writers have collected data on the subject of pearls, and have accumulated all the obtainable literature, not only the easily procurable books, but likewise manuscripts, copies of rare volumes, original edicts, and legislative enactments, thousands of newspaper clippings, and interesting illustrations, many of them unique, making probably the largest single collection of data in existence on this particular subject. It was deemed advisable to present the results of these studies and observations in one harmonious volume, rather than in two different publications. While the book is a joint work in the sense that each writer has contributed material to all of the chapters and has critically examined and approved the entire work, the senior author has more closely applied himself to the latter half of the text, covering antiquity values, commerce, wearing manipulation, treatment, famous collections, aboriginal use, and the illustrations, while the junior author has attended to the earlier half of the book, with reference to history, origin, sources, fisheries, culture, mystical properties, and the literature of the pearl.

Book Pearl Arms and Hashish

Download or read book Pearl Arms and Hashish written by Henri De Monfried and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nobleman, writer, adventurer and inspiration for the swashbuckling gun runner in the Adventures of Tintin, Henri de Monfried lived by his own account 'a rich, restless, magnificent life' as one of the great travellers of his or any age. Infamous as well as famous, his name is inextricably linked to the Red Sea and the raffish ports between Suez and Aden in the early years of the twentieth century. This is a compelling account of how de Monfried sought his fortune by becoming a collector and merchant of the fabled Gulf pearls, and was then drawn into the shadowy world of arms trading, slavery, smuggling and drugs. Hashish was the drug of choice, and de Monfried writes of sailing to Suez with illegal cargoes, dodging blockades and pirates. This compelling book is a unique and detailed portrayal of a colourful and dangerous world that has now disappeared. It allows us to share in the exhilarating adventures of a legend whose love for the sea and zest for life run across every page.
