Book Colonial Settlers on the River Torrens

Download or read book Colonial Settlers on the River Torrens written by Roger Irvine and published by Wakefield Press. This book was released on 2019-01-30 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kaurna people lived peacefully and productively along the River Torrens, or Karrawirra Parri, for millennia. This book describes their way of life and their displacement by the first generation of European settlers. The outstanding achievement of the settlers on the upper Torrens was the contribution they made to the development of horticulture. They transitioned from grains and livestock to producing huge quantities of melons and an impressive diversity of fruits, vines and vegetables. Roger Irvine details the lives of these settler families, including notables such as Charles Campbell who gave his name to 'Campbell Town', Joseph Ind whose property 'Little Paradise' provided a name for another suburb, and A.J. Murray who chose 'Athelstone' as the name of his farm, for reasons now difficult to trace. The inhabitants of the upper Torrens have witnessed many changes, including both setbacks and successes. Colonial Settlers on the River Torrens reflects on an area that has had many incarnations, and the river that continues to flow through it.

Book Ecocritical Concerns and the Australian Continent

Download or read book Ecocritical Concerns and the Australian Continent written by Beate Neumeier and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-11-08 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecocritical Concerns and the Australian Continent investigates literary, historical, anthropological, and linguistic perspectives in connection with activist engagements. The necessary cross-fertilization between these different perspectives throughout this volume emerges in the resonances between essays exploring recurring concerns ranging from biodiversity and preservation policies to the devastating effects of the mining industries, to present concerns and futuristic visions of the effects of climate change. Of central concern in all of these contexts is the impact of settler colonialism and an increasing turn to indigenous knowledge systems. A number of chapters engage with questions of ecological imperialism in relation to specific sociohistorical moments and effects, probing early colonial encounters between settlers and indigenous people, or rereading specific forms of colonial literature. Other essays take issue with past and present constructions of indigeneity in different contexts, as well as with indigenous resistance against such ascriptions, while the importance of an understanding of indigenous notions of “care for country” is taken up from a variety of different disciplinary angles in terms of interconnectedness, anchoredness, living country, and living heritage.

Book Pioneers Settlers Aliens Exiles

Download or read book Pioneers Settlers Aliens Exiles written by J. L. Fisher and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What did the future hold for Rhodesia's white population at the end of a bloody armed conflict fought against settler colonialism? Would there be a place for them in newly independent Zimbabwe? PIONEERS, SETTLERS, ALIENS, EXILES sets out the terms offered by Robert Mugabe in 1980 to whites who opted to stay in the country they thought of as their home. The book traces over the next two decades their changing relationshipwith the country when the post-colonial government revised its symbolic and geographical landscape and reworked codes of membership. Particular attention is paid to colonial memories and white interpellation in the official account of the nation's rebirth and indigene discourses, in view of which their attachment to the place shifted and weakened. As the book describes the whites' trajectory from privileged citizens to persons of disputed membership and contested belonging, it provides valuable background information with regard to the land and governance crises that engulfed Zimbabwe at the start of the twenty-first century.
