Book excerpt: Since the great efforts that Britain had made between the years 500 and 1000 to bring theknowledge of the truth into the still heathen portions of the Continent, -since the days ofColumban and Gal, of Boniface and Willibrord, -there had been a cessation of missionaryenterprise. The known portions of the world were either Christian, or were in the hands ofthe Mahommedans; and no doubt much of the adventurous spirit which, united withreligious enthusiasm, forms the missionary, found vent in the Crusades, and training in themilitary orders. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charlotte Mary Yonge (1823-1901), was an English novelist, known for her huge output. She was devoted to the Church of England, and much influenced by John Keble, a near neighbour and one of the leaders of the Oxford Movement. Her novels reflected the values and concerns of Anglo-Catholicism. She began writing in 1848, and published during her long life about 100 works, chiefly novels. Her first commercial success, The Heir of Redclyffe (1854), provided the funding to enable the schooner Southern Cross to be put into service on behalf of George Selwyn. Similar charitable works were done with the profits from later novels. She was also editor, for nearly forty years, of a magazine for young ladies, the Monthly Packet with a varied readership, but targeted at British Anglican girls.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary Pioneer: Or a Brief Memoir of the Life, Labours, and Death of John Stewart, (Man of Colour, ) Founder, Under God of the Mission Among the Wyandotts at Upper Sandusky, Ohio It will be readily seen by the reader, that this little memoir is not intended as the pan egyric of its pious subject; but merely as a record of interestingincidents, in which he had a prominent agency. Eulogy on his vir tues is not needed; for Heaven has awarded him a more substantial and enduring inheri tance. And though on earth his lot was one of poverty, persecution, and extreme adversity; the patience and resignation of Christianity bore him above the waves. And though un marked by a stone, his ashes obscurely re pose 1n the wilderness, we doubt not, his vir tues and his name stands registered in the Lamb's Book of everlasting life. Book excerpt: Since the great efforts that Britain had made between the years 500 and 1000 to bring the knowledge of the truth into the still heathen portions of the Continent, -since the days of Columban and Gal, of Boniface and Willibrord, -there had been a cessation of missionary enterprise. It was in the revival from the Paganism with which classical tastes had infected the Church, that the spirit of missions again awoke, stimulated, of course, by the wide discoveries of fresh lands that were dawning upon the earth. If from 1000 to 1500 the progress of the Gospel was confined to the borders of the Slavonic nation, the space of time from 1500 onwards has been one of constant and unwearied effort to raise the standard of the Cross in the new worlds beyond the Atlantic.
