Book The Original Pink Collar Workers

Download or read book The Original Pink Collar Workers written by Lady Jane Davis and published by . This book was released on 2015-04-03 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is it like for a woman to do a man's work, and do it better? Then have to work with him day in and day out. Or to have to go home to a husband who asks how her day went. Does she mention anything about the supervisor who patted her rear end or the inspector who wants to inspect more than her work? Moreover, she works in a factory so immense that she's never met everyone. But she knows someone is trying to destroy what she's building. It may just be the person working next to her, or the supervisor or inspector... or her best friend. What is the chance that you are this woman? In Pink Collar Workers, you may meet a woman who does the same work as you. You can just hear yourself saying, "Tomorrow is payday. Another day of trying to please the supervisor, ignoring a married man's lusty grin and tolerating that know-it-all worker." But it's a paycheck and anything to get that damned plane built...well, almost anything.

Book excerpt: What is it like for a woman to do a man's work, and do it better? That's what the first pink collar workers had to learn when they set down their skillets and aprons to pick up welding torches, hammers or rivet guns while the men fought to keep this country free during World War II. Then those men came back home, and they had to work with them day in and day out.But for their daughters and granddaughters the war in the workplace between men and women still goes on over three decades later. However, now the enemy is vastly different. It's an unseen force of lust, alcoholism and sex while several of the women need to band together in sisterhood. They've been caught up in espionage, intrigue and attempted murder--and whoever is sabotaging the planes that they're building. Could it be the supervisor, a former employee.. or the person they work with everyday?During all these great concerns our gals still need to earn a paycheck, and do anything to get that damned plane built... well, almost anything.

Download or read book Real Pink Collar Workers written by Jane Davis and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-27 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is really about many thousands of working women that I summed up in the antics of six twenty-something gals and a mid-thirty cop's wife. They worked in a gigantic airplane factory under the leadership of a wise, down-home black Southern woman. And, oh, the trials of watching over that misfit team! This is about adventure, sexual harassment, romance, intrigue, addiction and the attempted murder of a colleague while working together in sisterhood in a "man's world". (And just who's the preacher, the lesbian or of royal blood?) You'll find gut-busting, laugh-out-loud humor along with some tear-jerking, heart wrenching times while trying to find who's sabotaging these airplanes. Could it be the inspector, a disgruntled worker or maybe their own supervisor? But it's a paycheck and anything to get that damned plane built...well, almost anything. This story comes from actual events that occurred during my many years as an airplane factory worker plus happenings while my mother worked at the Boeing Airplane Company during World War II. And you bet, she was a riveter! Enjoyed by aerospace workers world wide! "(Lady) Jane drew off not just her personal experience at Boeing, but her mom-- one of the 'Rosie the Riveters' who forged the way to be accepted into a "man's" work place." C. Kelliher, editor; Aero Mechanic District 751 newspaper."Sharp, funny, tragic and fun. A great read; romance and scandal, espionage and sabotage-- everything a good historical fiction novel should have. The writer has a sharp wit and a keen sense of sarcasm."Christopher Bailey, author of the Starjumper Legacy.Women's fiction? It's more like real life! Believe me, and the author, this is exactly what goes on behind the scenes in the real world of factory workers. From hilarious one-line humor to intense tragedy this was a great emotional ride." J. Carol Johnson, author of The Lonely Life of a Pornographer's Wife."A well-written clean story of sisterhood, faith and romance that brought forth tears of life and laughter."Nelson Stevens, fellow writer. What a funny, exciting, heart-wrenching story! I never really knew what went on with the women who did this kind of work. The author really helped me understand how hard-working those women were, how their lives were turned upside down and yet they fought their way through the back-breaking labor, the bigotry, and the sexist attitudes to succeed in an industry that, until then, had been dominated by men. Their lives, indeed the working world, would never be the same...and I, for one am grateful! Thanks for an entertaining and educational look into an important part of our American history!F. Book Breaking Out of the Pink Collar Ghetto

Download or read book Breaking Out of the Pink Collar Ghetto written by Sharon H. Mastracci and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely interdisciplinary in appeal, this book reports on the successes of innovative training opportunities for non-college women who end up in low-paying, low-mobility, pink-collar jobs. The author examines the relative effectiveness of various programs in helping these women gain access to high-wage, high-mobility employment opportunities. The analysis includes case studies of grant-funded projects, as well as in-depth statistical analysis using ten years of data on women throughout the United States. These types of education and training options are in tremendous demand, and the author finds that they are having a powerful impact on the job prospects of non-college women. As an integral part of her study, she spells out what kinds of programs have proven most and least effective. Breaking Out of the Pink-Collar Ghetto addresses vital issues concerning the effects of gender segregation in career counseling and employment and training policy. It provides much-needed guidance on employment and training services delivery. The book has wide application for students as well as professionals in the fields of public policy and public administration, educational counseling and vocational education, labor economics, and women's studies.

Book excerpt: Newsletter CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS | WINTER 2018 21 Middle School Lesson Pink Collar Jobs: Gender Segregation and Pay Inequality in the Workplace Rationale This lesson increases student awareness about the issues of gender segregation in the workplace and pay inequity, problems that persist but are often masked by progress in the women's rights movement over the past decades. [...] Business Executive Who is the woman behind the desk? What is her position? What does her husband do? Why is the cartoon considered humorous? How have women's roles in the workplace (and men's roles at home) changed over time? What is the cartoonist saying about women's opportunities in the workplace today? Corporate Ladder What is the purpose or function of a ladder? What do you think. [...] Ask the group reporters, one at a time, to summarize the key data and themes in the graph created by their group. [...] While there has been much progress for women in the workplace over the last 30-40 years, there is still a high degree of gender segregation in the work world and, in general, "women's work" is less valued and pays less than "men's work." Women who work in traditionally male fields earn more on average than women in traditionally female fields. [...] Suggest that students can organize an Equal Pay Day (in April or any time of the year) in their school or community and implement one or more of the ideas they generated above in Part III #1.

Book Language Global Mobilities Blue Collar Workers and Blue collar Workplaces

Download or read book Language Global Mobilities Blue Collar Workers and Blue collar Workplaces written by Kellie Gonçalves and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection brings together global perspectives which critically examine the ways in which language as a resource is used and managed in myriad ways in various blue-collar workplace settings in today’s globalized economy. In focusing on blue-collar work environments, the book sheds further light on the informal processes through which top down language policies take place in different multilingual settings and the resultant asymmetrical power relations which emerge among employees and employers in such settings. Taking into account the latest debates on poststructuralist theories of language, the volume also extends its conceptualization of language to demonstrate the ways in which it extends to a wider range of multilingual and multimodal resources and communicative practices, all of which combine in unique and different ways toward constructing meaning in the workplace. The volume’s unique focus on such workplaces also showcases domains of work which have generally until now been less visible within existing research on language in the workplace and the subsequent methodological challenges that arise from studying them. Integrating a range of theoretical and methodological approaches, along with empirical data from a diverse range of blue-collar workplaces, this book will be of particular interest to students and researchers in critical sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, sociology, and linguistic anthropology.

Book Sociology of Work

Download or read book Sociology of Work written by Vicki Smith and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2013-05-16 with total page 1183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The simple act of going to work every day is an integral part of all societies across the globe. It is an ingrained social contract: we all work to survive. But it goes beyond physical survival. Psychologists have equated losing a job with the trauma of divorce or a family death, and enormous issues arise, from financial panic to sinking self-esteem. Through work, we build our self-identity, our lifestyle, and our aspirations. How did it come about that work dominates so many parts of our lives and our psyche? This multi-disciplinary encyclopedia covers curricular subjects that seek to address that question, ranging from business and management to anthropology, sociology, social history, psychology, politics, economics, and health. Features & Benefits: International and comparative coverage. 335 signed entries, A-to-Z, fill 2 volumes in print and electronic formats. Cross-References and Suggestions for Further Readings guide readers to additional resources. A Chronology provides students with historical perspective of the sociology of work. Book Creative Compounding in English

Download or read book Creative Compounding in English written by Réka Benczes and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-11-08 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metaphorical and metonymical compounds – novel and lexicalised ones alike – are remarkably abundant in language. Yet how can we be sure that when using an expression such as land fishing in order to speak about metal detecting, the referent will be immediately understood even if the hearer had not been previously familiar with the compound? Accordingly, this book sets out to explore whether the semantics of metaphorical and metonymical noun–noun combinations can be systematically analysed within a theoretical framework, where systematicity pertains to regularities in both the cognitive processes and the products of these processes, that is, the compounds themselves. Backed up by recent psycholinguistic evidence, the book convincingly demonstrates that such compounds are not semantically opaque as it has been formerly claimed: they can in fact be analysed and accounted for within a cognitive linguistic framework, by the combined application of metaphor, metonymy, blending, profile determinacy and schema theory; and represent the creative and associative word formation processes that we regularly apply in everyday language.

Book Communication Advocacy and Work Family Balance

Download or read book Communication Advocacy and Work Family Balance written by Jenny Dixon and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an understanding of work-family balance for working adults belonging to a number of different family structures (e.g. single and/or childfree adults, LGBT couples, families with female breadwinners). It contends that family structure should serve as a way of thinking about diversity (i.e., race, gender, age, family) in the U.S. workplace. It also argues that—in addition to accommodations occurring through workplace policy—the negotiation of work-family balance happens as a result of self-advocacy that occurs in everyday communication about family at work. Relaying the stories of a number of different working adults belonging to a variety of different family structures, it explores the range of obstacles faced in the attempt at balancing work and family life, generates informed ideas for eliminating barriers commonly experienced in balancing work and family, and problematizes enduring assumptions regarding gender roles and the myth of steadfast public and private spheres.
