Book excerpt: The highest numbers of fecal coliforms documented in the Rio Grande in this study were 100 times more numerous than the next highest rivers, which indicates the severity of the biological impact in the Paso del Norte region. [...] In the study, elevated levels (>1,000 cfu/100ml) of fecal coliforms were detected at all six locations: 21% of the samples at Doña Ana, 48% of the samples at Courchesne, 35% of the samples at the Del Rio Drain, 52% of the samples at the Montoya Drain, 35% of the samples at Ciudad Juárez, and 27% of the samples at Alamo. [...] The flow in the study area reflects a combination of reservoir releases, canal waste, water returned to the river from the drain system, discharge to the river from the ephemeral tributaries, and sewage discharge from communities along the river. [...] The primary objective of this proposal was to analyze the pathogen distribution patterns for the region of the Rio Grande between Las Cruces and Ciudad Juárez-El Paso. Book excerpt: Legionnaires' disease, a pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacterium, is the leading cause of reported waterborne disease outbreaks in the United States. Legionella occur naturally in water from many different environmental sources, but grow rapidly in the warm, stagnant conditions that can be found in engineered water systems such as cooling towers, building plumbing, and hot tubs. Humans are primarily exposed to Legionella through inhalation of contaminated aerosols into the respiratory system. Legionnaires' disease can be fatal, with between 3 and 33 percent of Legionella infections leading to death, and studies show the incidence of Legionnaires' disease in the United States increased five-fold from 2000 to 2017. Management of Legionella in Water Systems reviews the state of science on Legionella contamination of water systems, specifically the ecology and diagnosis. This report explores the process of transmission via water systems, quantification, prevention and control, and policy and training issues that affect the incidence of Legionnaires' disease. It also analyzes existing knowledge gaps and recommends research priorities moving forward.

But in fact there are many varieties of genetic susceptibility to infection, the subject of this book, which will be divided into three sections: 1) concepts and methods, 2) genes and pathophysiologic mechanisms, and 3) infectious agents and diseases. No currently plubished text on either genetics or infectious diseases focuses on the genetic aspects of the special relationship between host and pathogen in the way envisioned for Section 1. No other work on the selected genes regulating immunity deals as systematically with the sequence variation/function relationships most pertinent to infection as planned for Section 2. And no other book gives as meaningful a picture of how these genes operate in infectious disease as Section 3 will.
