Book Advances in Carbon Capture and Utilization

Download or read book Advances in Carbon Capture and Utilization written by Deepak Pant and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the recent trends in carbon management and up-to-date information on different carbon management strategies that lead to manage increasing concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide. The growing evidence of climate change resulting from the continued increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration has made it a high profile political–social and trade issue. The mean global average earth temperature rose by 0.6± 2°C during the second half of the century with the rate of 0.17°C/decade. As per GISS data in the year of 2017, it rose 0.9°C (1.62 °F) above the 1951-1980 mean global temperature. Recently World Meteorological Organization analyzes the past record temperature and found the past 10 years were the warmest years about 1.1°C above preindustrial level. Over the past decade, carbon management by various techniques has to come to fore as a way to manage carbon dioxide emissions contributing to climate change. The proposed book addresses the need for an understanding of sustainable carbon dioxide management technologies mainly focused on (a) minimizing carbon dioxide emission from sources; (b) maximizing environmentally sound recuse, reduce and recycling; (c)emerging technology toward carbon dioxide mitigation and d) converting carbon dioxide into valuable products form sustainable use. Other books related to carbon management attempt to cover the carbon capture and sequestration, carbon mineralization, utilization and storage but the topic of CO2 management strategies is not discussed in detail for sustainable development. Furthermore, this book also covers all physical, chemical and biological process for long-term capture, removal and sequestration of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere for sustainable management which is not described in other carbon management books. In order to meet CO2 emissions reduction target, a range of technological approaches, including development of clean fuels and clean coal technologies, adopting cleaner and more energy efficiency and conservation, developing renewable energy and implementing CCS technologies, will also be considered for sustainable future.

Download or read book Biofuels from Algae written by Hong-Wei Yen and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-08-08 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cultivation of phototrophic microalgae has been recognized as a promising platform for the production of renewable biofuels and a variety of valuable products through a series of biorefinery processes. To enable microalgal growth at the maximum productivity level to enhance economic competitiveness, the design of photobioreactors for efficient and cost-effective phototrophic cultivation is one of the most important issues in practice. This article elucidates comprehensive information on the characteristics of microalgae cultivation as well as the key factors and challenges that should be addressed regarding the phototrophic process. The design principle of the photobioreactor (PBR) for achieving highly efficient cultivation is also summarized. Many of today’s PBRs are open systems due to the cost issue; even so, closed photobioreactors have recently attracted considerable attention for the production of valuable compounds. The comparison of designs and features of the open and closed systems are discussed. Furthermore, the current development status of commercial microalgae cultivation systems by several companies is given as examples to expose the potential of and the challenges in using microalgal biomass. The objective of this chapter is to provide useful knowledge and information with regard to the design of PBR for microalgae cultivation with critical evaluations of those systems to facilitate the future development of the microalgae industry.

Book Algal Toxins Nature Occurrence Effect and Detection

Download or read book Algal Toxins Nature Occurrence Effect and Detection written by Valtere Evangelista and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-06-27 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the lectures and seminars given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on “Sensor Systems for Biological Threads: The Algal Toxins Case”, held in Pisa, Italy in October, 2007. The Institute was sponsored and funded by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. It is my pleasant duty to thank this institution. This ASI offered updated information on how far the research on algal toxins has gone in the exploration of structures, biosynthesis and regulation of toxins, and the development of technology for bio-monitoring these c- pounds. Algae can form heavy growths in ponds, lakes, reservoirs and sl- moving rivers throughout the world; algae can house toxins which are - ually released into water when the cells rupture or die. Hundreds of toxins have been identified so far. Detection methods, including rapid screening, have been developed to help us learning more about them, especially to find out which toxins are a real threat for people and what conditions encourage their production and accumulation. Early detection of algal toxins is an - portant aspect for public safety and natural environment, and significant efforts are underway to develop effective and reliable tools that can be used for this purpose.
