Download or read book The Prayer written by Christopher Levan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-09-13 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can sixty-eight words change the world? Seems impossible. An even greater mystery, these words come in the form of a prayer. Christopher Levan shows how early Christians used what we now call The Lord's Prayer as a building block for their movement. It was from these sixty-eight words that they created the backbone and determination to shape a religious movement that would dramatically alter human history. Walking step by step through The Prayer, Levan will show how Jesus of Nazareth adapted the economic and spiritual principles from his Jewish heritage and teaching, to direct his followers in a simple, yet very profound conversation with their Creator. In The Prayer, Jesus' disciples found words to build God's reign on earth: "the kingdom of God." Obviously, these sixty-eight words are not just words. They have power. They enact what they express. And far from spent, these words still contain the ability to enliven and shape the current expressions of God's reign here and now.

Book excerpt: Timothy Leary, the visionary Harvard psychologist who became a guru of the 1960s counterculture, reentered as an icon of new edge cyberpunks. HIGH PRIEST chronicles 16 psychedelic trips taken in the days before LSD was made illegal. The trip guides or "High Priests" include Aldous Huxley, Gordon Wasson, William S. Burroughs, Godsdog, Allen Ginsberg, Ram Dass, Ralph Metzner, Willy (a junkie from New York City), Huston Smith, Frank Barron, and others. The scene was Millbrook, a mansion in Upstate New York, that was the Mecca of Psychedellia during the 1960s, and of the many luminaries of the period who made a pilgrimage there to trip with Leary and his group, The League for Spiritual Discovery. Each chapter includes an I-Ching reading, a chronicle of what happened during the trip, marginalia of comments, quotations, and illustrations. A fascinating window into an era. This edition includes a Foreword by Allen Ginsberg, an introduction by Timothy Leary about the intergenerational counterculture, and illustrations by Howard Hallis.

Book Riff Ram Bah Zoo Football Comes to TCU

Download or read book Riff Ram Bah Zoo Football Comes to TCU written by Ezra Hood and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2013-09-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Riff, Ram, Bah, Zoo, Lickety Lickety, Zoo Zoo, Who Wah, Wah Who, Give 'em hell, TCU! Ezra Hood’s Riff, Ram, Bah, Zoo! Football Comes to TCU (named after TCU's "Riff, Ram" cheer, one of the oldest known cheers in the nation) traces the origins of Texas Christian University, a tiny liberal arts college in Waco, Texas, to its induction into the Southwest Conference in 1922 as an up-and-coming collegiate football power. Drawing from numerous newspaper sources—most notably from the TCU Daily Skiff—Hood’s book provides an in-depth, game-by-game history of a football program that struggled to find its place amongst established Texas football programs in the early twentieth century. Hood begins with the university’s conception in 1873, when it was known as AddRan Male and Female College, and describes the rise of football’s popularity in Texas. From there, the book chronicles each of TCU’s football seasons from its first year in 1896 to its final year in TIAA play, before it joined the Southwest Conference and went on to become, in Hood’s words, “the prince of the Southwest in the 1930s.” Hood captures particular details of each season—noting significant coaching changes and highly-touted recruits—all the while providing anecdotes from local newspapers as a way to capture the community response to TCU football in both Waco and Fort Worth. And while the book focuses largely on the ups and downs of the program, Hood also captures the impact of the times on both TCU and the many towns of central and north Texas—the impact of the first World War, for instance, on the state of football nationwide and the loss of notable TCU players to the war effort. Thanks to Hood’s exhaustive historical account, this book will be a valuable reference for both fans and historians of TCU and the game of football.

Book San Francisco Bay Area Sports

Download or read book San Francisco Bay Area Sports written by Rita Liberti and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: San Francisco Bay Area Sports brings together fifteen essays covering the issues, controversies, and personalities that have emerged as northern Californians recreated and competed over the last 150 years. The area’s diversity, anti-establishment leanings, and unique and beautiful natural surroundings are explored in the context of a dynamic sporting past that includes events broadcast to millions or activities engaged in by just a few. Professional and college events are covered along with lesser-known entities such as Oakland’s public parks, tennis player and Bay Area native Rosie Casals, environmentalism and hiking in Marin County, and the origins of the Gay Games. Taken as a whole, this book clarifies how sport is connected to identities based on sexuality, gender, race, and ethnicity. Just as crucial, the stories here illuminate how sport and recreation can potentially create transgressive spaces, particularity in a place known for its nonconformity.
