Book Continental Pietism and Early American Christianity

Download or read book Continental Pietism and Early American Christianity written by F. Ernest Stoeffler and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-02-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American has been shaped from a variety of rich traditions, many of which continue to influence her life and institutions. With this pluralistic emphasis in mind, F. Ernest Stoeffler has brought together these essays on Pietism, each written by a scholar with professional interest in the area treated. Without denying the importance of the Puritan heritage on early America, Stoeffler hopes to show that Pietism too made a crucial contribution to American religious life. Contrary to some twentieth-century misconceptions, Pietism was activistic, political, social, and educational in orientation. It penetrated mainline denominations like the Lutheran, Reformed, and Mennonite churches. It played an important role in the Brethren and Methodist traditions and in the formation of the Moravian Church. And radical Pietism flourished in a variety of Christian communist communities, like the one at Ephrata. Pietism contributed to religious practice by promoting evangelism, social action on behalf of the poor, and experiential base for religion, a biblical foundation for theology and ethics, the development of Protestant hymnody, ecumenical understanding, and democracy. This study is an important first step toward filling a serious gap in understanding America's religious history.

Book Pacifism in the United States

Download or read book Pacifism in the United States written by Peter Brock and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 1018 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Called "a pioneer work of the first importance" by Staughton Lynd, this book traces the history of pacifism in America from colonial times to the start of World War I. The author describes how the immigrant peace sects-Quaker, Mennonite, and Dunker -faced the challenges of a hostile environment. The peace societies that sprang up after 1815 form the subject of the next section, with particular attention focused upon the American Peace Society and Garrison's New England Non-Resistance Society. A series of chapters on the reactions of these sects and societies to the Civil War, the neglect of pacifism in the postwar period, and the beginnings of a renewal in the years before the outbreak of war in Europe bring the book to a close. The emphasis on the institutional aspects of the movement is balanced throughout by a rich mine of accounts about the experiences of individual pacifists. Originally published in 1968. Book The Burden of German History

Download or read book The Burden of German History written by Konrad H. Jarausch and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2023-04-14 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of the leading historians of Modern Europe and an internationally acclaimed scholar for the past five decades, Konrad H. Jarausch presents a sustained academic reflection on the post-war German effort to cope with the guilt of the Holocaust amongst a generation of scholars too young to have been perpetrators. Ranging from his war-time childhood to Americanization as a foreign student, from his development as a professional historian to his directorship of the Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschung and concluding with his mentorship of dozens of PhDs, The Burden of Germany History reflects on the emergence of a self-critical historiography of a twentieth-century Germany that was wrestling with the responsibility for war and genocide. This partly professional and partly personal autobiography explores a wide range of topics including the development of German historiography and its methodological debates, the interdisciplinary teaching efforts in German studies, and the role of scholarly organizations and institutions.

Book An American Biblical Orientalism

Download or read book An American Biblical Orientalism written by David D. Grafton and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-10-16 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An American Biblical Orientalism: The Construction of Jews, Christians, and Muslims in Nineteenth-Century American Evangelical Piety examines the life and work of Eli Smith, William McClure Thomson, and Edward Robinson and their descriptions of the “Bible Lands.” While there has been a great deal written about American travelogues to the Holy Lands, this book focuses on how these three prominent American Protestants described the indigenous peoples, and how those images were consumed by American Christians who had little direct experience with the “Bible Lands.” David D. Grafton argues that their publications (Biblical Researches, Later Biblical Researches, and The Land and the Book) profoundly impacted the way that American Protestants read and interpreted the Bible in the late-nineteenth century. The descriptions and images of the people found their way into American Bible dictionaries, theological dictionaries, and academic and religious circles of a growing bible readership in North America. Ultimately, the people of late Ottoman society (e.g. Jews, Christians and Muslims) were essentialized as the living characters of the Bible. These peoples were fitted into categories as heroes or villains from biblical stories, and rarely seen as modern people in their own right. Thus, in the words of Edward Said, they were “orientalized."
