Download or read book Astrology and Magic from the Medieval Latin and Islamic World to Renaissance Europe written by Paola Zambelli and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astrology and Magic from the Medieval Latin and Islamic World to Renaissance Europe brings together ten of Paola Zambelli's papers on the subject, four of which are published in English for the first time. The papers in Part I of this volume deal with theories: the ideas of astrology and magic held by Renaissance thinkers; astrologers' ideas on universal history and its cycles; i.e. catastrophes and rebirths, theories; and myths regarding the spontaneous generation of man himself. Part II focuses on the role of astrologers in Renaissance society. As political counsellors, courtiers, and academics, their ideas were diffused and appreciated in both popular and high culture. Part III looks at the Great Conjunction of 1524 and on the long and extended debate surrounding it, which would not have been possible prior to Gutenberg, since astrologers printed numberless booklets (full of religious and political innuendo) predicting the catastrophe - flood, as well as earthquake or fire - foreseen for February 1524 (which, in the event, proved to be a month of extraordinary mild weather). Part IV reprints some review-articles of twentieth century scholars whose writing has contributed to our understanding of the historical problems concerning magic and other connected debates.

Download or read book Philon D Alexandrie written by Jean Danielou SJ and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-07-02 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philo of Alexandria, according to Cardinal Danielou, represents the first attempt to correct Greek philosophical thought with biblical revelation. Philo was a faithful Jew who studiously avoided syncretism with pagan religion: biblical worship could only be radically monotheistic. But Philo represents more than a spiritual master; he inaugurated Judeo-Christian philosophy itself. But even here, Philo avoided syncretism with Platonism and remained highly orthodox. Modifying Greek philosophy at the points where it conflicted with biblical revelation, Philo built the fundamentals of a Judeo-Christian way of looking at the world that would have a profound influence for centuries to come.

Download or read book Philo of Alexandria written by Jean Danielou and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2014-12-25 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean Danielou's 'Philo of Alexandria' illuminates the life and work of a key figure in the history of religious thought. Philo of Alexandria was a first-century Hellenistic Jewish philosopher who was born into a wealthy and prominent family in Alexandria, in the Roman province of Egypt. Educated in both Jewish culture and Greek philosophy, Philo believed that literal interpretations of the Hebrew Bible would distort the Jewish people's perceptions of a God too complex to be understood in literal, human terms. He became one of the first religious thinkers to initiate a strong allegorical reading of Scripture. Jean Danielou places Philo's writing in context, detailing the remarkable events of the philosopher's life, including a diplomatic mission to present himself before the Roman Emperor Caligula on behalf of the persecuted Jews of Alexandria. James Colbert's English translation provides a highly accessible introduction to this important figure, a pioneer of biblical commentary whose work has had a lasting influence on Christian theology. It is essential reading for those interested in patristics, exegesis, or the history of religious and philosophical thought.
