Book excerpt: Essays from local historians on Atlanta's Piedmont Park are collected in this social history of a Southern landmark that attracts two million visitors annually and hosts important cultural and sports activities. Originally the site of the 1895 Cotton States and International Exposition, the 189 acres in the heart of the city became the home of an off-season circus before members of the nearby gentleman's driving club organized to develop the acreage into a civic Park in 1903. Atlanta's first golf course was laid out at the park, and it has become the home of political rallies, concerts, and arts festivals. Included are anecdotes and quotes from some of Atlanta's most esteemed citizens and visitors, including Rick Bragg, Sibley Fleming, Terry Kay, and Indigo Girls Amy Ray and Emily Saliers.

Book A Fractured Past

Download or read book A Fractured Past written by Tony Holland and published by Page Publishing, Inc. This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a true life account of what it was like growing up a young black gay man in the largest Southeastern city in the Bible Belt. Atlanta, Georgia, 1960s and 1970s—a city that was the focal point of growth in the Southeastern United States that then, just as today, was saddled with trying to grow into a world-class city while attempting to minimize or even hide its shameful undercurrent of racism, sexism, classism, and overall prejudice. It was, and is, a very conservative place at its core. In the early days in Atlanta, when I was growing up, the African American community definitely felt it had something to prove. What with being the centerpiece of the civil rights movement, the community recognized that this was an opportunity for its black citizens to make a true stand for an independence and growth that was denied elsewhere in our nation as a whole. We were onstage, and the entire nation knew it. To that end, the church played a very big part in the development of the community. From my first realization that I had same-sex interests, there was no doubt that to disclose that fact with anyone would at the very least cause me to be ostracized. The pain and conflict that this caused me was nearly unbearable and was the catalyst that gave direction to much of my life from puberty on. Much has been written about this period in Atlanta from the racial angle. There has also been a great deal written about the early years of gay liberation in Atlanta. However, I've never encountered writings that adequately equated or depicted the relationship of both. In this book, I will attempt to give one man's account of what it was really like trying to straddle both worlds and keep them from crashing into each other, for I was sure that were that to happen, it would have guaranteed my personal destruction. Ironically, what I found was that danger to me existed in both communities. Though coming from different directions, in many ways, the dangers were very similar.

Book A Night at the Sweet Gum Head Drag Drugs Disco and Atlanta s Gay Revolution

Download or read book A Night at the Sweet Gum Head Drag Drugs Disco and Atlanta s Gay Revolution written by Martin Padgett and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An electric and intimate story of 1970s gay Atlanta through its bedazzling drag clubs and burgeoning rights activism. Coursing with a pumped-up beat, gay Atlanta was the South's mecca—a beacon for gays and lesbians growing up in its homophobic towns and cities. There, the Sweet Gum Head was the club for achieving drag stardom. Martin Padgett evokes the fantabulous disco decade by going deep into the lives of two men who shaped and were shaped by this city: John Greenwell, an Alabama runaway who found himself and his avocation performing as the exquisite Rachel Wells; and Bill Smith, who took to the streets and city hall to change antigay laws. Against this optimism for visibility and rights, gay people lived with daily police harassment and drug dealing and murder in their discos and drag clubs. Conducting interviews with many of the major figures and reading through deteriorating gay archives, Padgett expertly re-creates Atlanta from a time when a vibrant, new queer culture of drag and pride came into being.

Book Atlanta s Ponce de Leon Avenue

Download or read book Atlanta s Ponce de Leon Avenue written by Sharon Foster Jones and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02-27 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named for the famous Spanish explorer who was said to have discovered the Fountain of Youth, Atlanta's Ponce de Leon Avenue began as a simple country road that conveyed visitors to the famous healing springs. Now, few motorists realize that the avenue, one of Atlanta's major commuter thoroughfares, was a prestigious residential street in Victorian Atlanta, home to mayors and millionaires. An economic turn in the twentieth century transformed the avenue into a crime-ridden commercial corridor, but in recent years, Atlantans have rediscovered the street's venerable architecture and storied history. Join local historian Sharon Foster Jones on a vivid tour of the avenue - from picnics by the springs in hoopskirts and Atlanta Crackers baseball to the Fox Theatre and the days when Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable and Al Capone lodged in the esteemed hotels lining this magnificent avenue.

Book Atlanta

  • Author : David King Gleason
  • Publisher : LSU Press
  • Release : 1994-09-01
  • ISBN : 9780807119372
  • Pages : 172 pages

Download or read book Atlanta written by David King Gleason and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1994-09-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its beginnings as a tiny rail-line settlement in 1837 to its emergence as the designated host city for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, Atlanta has been on the move. Its dramatic and ever-changing skyline attests to the fact that it is one of America’s most dynamic cities—the epitome of what has come to be known as the “New South.” Yet for all its striking modern architecture, Atlanta is much more than a collection of soaring skyscrapers, as David King Gleason makes clear in this beautiful new book, featuring some 150 color photographs of Georgia’s capital city in all its splendid variety. Here are Atlanta’s impressive business towers, familiar to travelers from all over the world, but here too are its bucolic neighborhoods and parks, its decades-old landmarks and educational institutions, its sporting and entertainment facilities, its museums and theaters. With his camera Gleason roams from downtown, where the nineteenth-century ornateness of the gold-domed State Capitol contrasts with the ultramodern designs of recently built skyscrapers, to the outskirts of this sprawling city, were the winding Chattachoochee River and the mammoth carved granite dome of Stone Mountain attract visitors year-round. He discloses the diversity of Atlanta’s many neighborhoods in shots of the rejuvenated Midtown section, whose well-established residential enclaves now sit almost cheek by jowl with new office buildings, and farther to the north, in photographs of the thriving Buckhead area, the site of some of the city’s most impressive mansions of the past as well as of more recent vintage. Reflecting Atlanta’s importance as an educational center, Gleason includes photographs of such institutions as Emory University, Georgia Tech, and the various colleges (Morehouse, Spelman, and others) that make up the Atlanta University Center. Photographs of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthplace and of the Carter Presidential Center are just two reminders that Georgians have often been at the forefront of political progress in America. The city’s interest in culture and recreation is represented in images of the High Museums of Art, the Atlanta Botanical Garden, Underground Atlanta, and the many sporting venues where both college and professional teams compete. An introduction by the Atlanta poet and physician John Stone and captions by newspaper journalist Don O’Briant complement Gleason’s evocative photographs. Anyone—longtime resident, newcomer, and visitor alike—will find this a book to keep and treasure.

Book Atlanta s Parks and Monuments

Download or read book Atlanta s Parks and Monuments written by Rodney Mims Cook Jr and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the city's beginnings after the War of 1812, Atlanta has had a tradition of building with a regard for becoming a world-class metropolis. Before being burned by Union general William T. Sherman in 1864, the city's appearance was described by noted European architect and urban planner Leon Krier as "looking like London in the 18th century." Atlanta was surrounded by estates and plantations, and many of the plantation builders were influenced by Greek and Roman architecture. The argument of slavery to the contrary, builders saw Greek temples as symbols of democracy and, as a result, embraced Greek and Roman revival architecture as the dominant national style. Great monuments followed in this tradition to the letter in the capital of the South.
