Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Pictures of the Middle Ages, in Black and White, Vol. 1 of 2: Made on the Spot, From Records in the Archives of Switzerland A preface is usually so seldom read, and generally so little wanted, that the author of this work long hesitated as to the propriety of appending one. The reflection, however, that it was ushered into the world under the title of History, at length decided her to point out explicitly the abundant sources whence the materials were drawn, lest it might be supposed th at these pictures were, in reality, nothing more than a few leading facts laid down to form a superstructure for a fabric of fiction. All the prin cipal details of the Huns' War, more especially liable to suspicion from the dramatic character of its incidents, will be found in Wiirstisen's Great Ger man Chronicle of Basle, published scarcely one hun dred years afterwards, when the events narrated were yet in the memory of many aged persons, by whom they were transmitted to posterity, both orally and by writing A. Short notice of this famous cloisteral dispute may also be met with in the eleventh volume of the Conservateur Suisse, a periodical publication. Book Empire and Papacy in the Middle Ages

Download or read book Empire and Papacy in the Middle Ages written by Alice Drayton Greenwood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Empire and Papacy in the Middle Ages: An Introduction to the Study of Medieval History for Use in Schools Tms little book is written for the use of those who have not yet made acquaintance with the history of the Mediteval Empire in the West. It aims, there fore, at giving broadly faithful pictures of the more important and interesting scenes and persons through out a very long period, and, as I have preferred omitting many facts and details to crowding the pages with mere names, a long series of events must sometimes be summed up in one paragraph. But I have attempted to observe due proportions, and I hope that, should the book ever be used in schools, teachers will find it to be so arranged as to lend itself easily to further expansion. In so small a book it would have been inappropriate to discuss vexed questions of history. If I have appeared to assume too much as proven, it is partly because in an introductory sketch I have thought clearness as important as correctness of detail. For the insertion of certain famous traditions I do not apologise: if not actually true, they usually give a truthful picture, and at least show us how, for centuries, men regarded certain deeds and heroes; they are a part of historical literature which only the scholar can afford to disregard, because he already knows them. Book When Knights Were Bold Classic Reprint

Download or read book When Knights Were Bold Classic Reprint written by Eva March Tappan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from When Knights Were Bold This book is in no degree an attempt to relate the involved and intricate history of the Middle Ages. Its plan is, rather, to pre sent pictures of the manner of life and habits of thought of the people who lived between the eighth and fifteenth centuries. Our writings and our everyday conversation are full of their phrases and of allusions to their ideas. Many of our thoughts and feelings and instincts, of our very follies and superstitions, have descended to us from them. To become better acquainted with them is to explain ourselves. In selecting from the enormous amount of material, I have sought to choose those customs which were most characteristic of the times and which have made the strongest impression upon the life of to-day, describing each custom when at its height, rather than tracing its development and history. I hope that the volume will be found sufficiently full to serve as a work of reference, and sufficiently interesting to win its way. Book LAST PERIODS OF UNIVERSAL HIST

Download or read book LAST PERIODS OF UNIVERSAL HIST written by Emma Willard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Last Periods of Universal History Prefatory remarks.-the fresh events just added to my Universal History are, though forcibly condensed into small compass, numerous, and full of interest and importance. Like Columbus, I have steered my bark through untraveled seas, having collected my facts mostly from newspapers and periodicals, including annals; but I have journeyed in the meantime in my own and in foreign countries, and have often enjoyed the privilege of conversing with the actors of the historic drama, or those personally acquainted with their deeds. The ability to trace great events to their true causes, cannot exist without previous familiarity with his tory; nor is this alone sufficient. And here it becomes no historian to presume on his own success, but humbly to await the award of his judges. Book Outlines of Medieval History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outlines of Medieval History Classic Reprint written by C. W. Previte Orton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Medieval History In writing an outline of European history, much of the labour of the writer must be employed in brevity of statement and in rigorous selection of matter, in omissions of what is interesting in itself and valuable for the science of humanity. In the choice of events to narrate I have been guided by their far-off results, rather than by their immediate eclat in their own time, and have tried to indicate how in the Middle Ages were accomplished the growth of modern man and the life and attitude to life of modern times. A sketch, too, must of necessity be sketchy, on the one side positive and over-clear where discreet shadows should be infused in a larger picture, on the other summary where the complexities of character or institution deserve a minuter etching. I trust, however, that the story has not wholly lost the interest of its theme, of the human strivings and the wild but purposeful convulsions by which modern Europe was made. The maps have been designed to illustrate, first, as in 2, 3, 4 and 7, the main political features of the period, and secondly, as in i, 2, 4 and 6, the factors in civilization and nationality which had so great a share in forming its history. By kind permission of the Syndics of the University Press and of Archdeacon Cunningham, Map 6, Trade-routes in the XIV Century, is taken from Western Civilisation in its economic aspects (Mediaeval and Modern Times). Book excerpt: Excerpt from Epics and Romances of the Middle Ages Egend is' not history; but in legend we find embodied historical truths, manners and customs of past ages, beliefs and superstitions otherwise long forgotten. Of which history itself takes no account. Legend has preserved for us, maybe in romantic dress, maybe' under altered names and circumstances, stirringgpictures of heroes and heroines, who once have lived and suffered, fought and conquered, or have faced death with' trustful courage; pictures, too, of men of equal prowess, as strong in evil as in might, who, victorious for a time, have yet ever met a stronger power than theirs, stronger in virtue, stronger in might. Book Historical Anthropology of the Middle Ages

Download or read book Historical Anthropology of the Middle Ages written by Aaron Gurevich and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1992-08 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aaron Gurevich has long been considered one of the world's leading medievalists and a pioneer in the field of historical anthropology. This book brings together eleven of his most important essays—many difficult to find and some never before available in English. Gurevich's writing, while informed by the history of mentalities as practiced by the French school of Le Goff and Duby, reflects a broader view of European culture outside France. He rejects reductionist concepts and operates with a total view of culture, using a wide range of sources—legal as well as ecclesiastical, popular as well as learned, oral and visual as well as literary. This collection amply demonstrates this breadth of Gurevich's work and highlights his ability to synthesize historical, anthropological, and semiotic approaches to culture. Especially valuable are pieces such as Gurevich's essay Wealth and Gift-Bestowal Among the Ancient Scandinavians, about the importance of gift exchange in the medieval world. One of the first studies for this practice, this classic essay has for years been unavailable. Other pieces range from the deities and heroes of Germanic poetry to the image of the Beyond in the Middle Ages.

Download or read book Toward a Global Middle Ages written by Bryan C. Keene and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important and overdue book examines illuminated manuscripts and other book arts of the Global Middle Ages. Illuminated manuscripts and illustrated or decorated books—like today’s museums—preserve a rich array of information about how premodern peoples conceived of and perceived the world, its many cultures, and everyone’s place in it. Often a Eurocentric field of study, manuscripts are prisms through which we can glimpse the interconnected global history of humanity. Toward a Global Middle Ages is the first publication to examine decorated books produced across the globe during the period traditionally known as medieval. Through essays and case studies, the volume’s multidisciplinary contributors expand the historiography, chronology, and geography of manuscript studies to embrace a diversity of objects, individuals, narratives, and materials from Africa, Asia, Australasia, and the Americas—an approach that both engages with and contributes to the emerging field of scholarly inquiry known as the Global Middle Ages. Featuring more than 160 color illustrations, this wide-ranging and provocative collection is intended for all who are interested in engaging in a dialogue about how books and other textual objects contributed to world-making strategies from about 400 to 1600.

Book The Early and Middle Ages of England Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Early and Middle Ages of England Classic Reprint written by Charles Henry Pearson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early and Middle Ages of England An epoch of great convulsions would scarcely seem to be consistent with the developement of the higher forms of life. Perhaps my estimate of the Middle Ages, which is rather more favourable than that commonly taken, has been coloured by the same tendency to believe in growth rather than in sudden and violent revolutions. It is difficult to study a literature and laws that are as English as our own in spirit and purpose without feeling that we have inherited good as well as evil from the past. In this second edition much is entirely new, and much has been re-written, it is hoped with some gain in accuracy and fulness. But the work of revision was interrupted by a long illness and absence from England, and it has been difficult for me to take up the broken links. Had I foreseen how much labour would be attracted into this department of knowledge, I should probably never have broken ground in it myself. But as the present volume, m spite of all faults, has appeared to supply a certain want as a text-book, I have decided to retain it in circulation, and make it as perfect as I can. That' it only aims at being a text-book will be obvious to all students of history. I am indebted to the Rev. F. F. Cornish, of Exeter College, Oxford, for a very careful analysis of a portion of Domesday Book. Of the friends who aided me in the first edition, Professor Shirley has unfortunately been removed by death from labours which promised to add much to our knowledge of English as well as of Church History. To Professor Brewer, Mr. Earle, and Mr. Sandare, I here repeat my cordial thanks for the kind assistance I have received from them. Book The Latin Church in the Middle Ages Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Latin Church in the Middle Ages Classic Reprint written by André Lagarde and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latin Church in the Middle Ages Northern Gaul; the Visigoths made Spain and the region south of the Loire their own; the Burgundians took possession of the upper valley of the Rhone; the Vandals made conquests in Africa. The Ostrogoths and Lombards were waiting for their turn to come. Among these new invaders, some were heretics, others were pagans. What is to become of the Church? Are its days numbered, and is the Empire to bring it down as its companion into an open tomb? N o, the Church will not descend into the tomb. It will survive the Empire. It will have to pass through days of distress. It will witness calamity after calamity, ruins heaped upon ruins. But in the midst of the greatest sadness, it will receive precious consolations. One after another, these barbarian peoples will submit to its laws, and will count it a glory to be the Church's children. The frontiers of the Church will be extended; its institutions, for a moment shaken by the Barbarians, will be consolidated, developed, and will adapt themselves to their surroundings. The papacy, most sorely tried of all, will make a new advance. At length a second empire will arise, and of this empire the Pope will be the master - more than this, he will be the master of: Europe. He will dictate his orders to kings who will obey them. Such is the picture of which this book is intended to be the outline. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginnings of Town Life in the Middle Ages, Vol. 10 The economist who seeks to learn something of the social history of the past is not seldom in an embarrassing situation. His first impulse, of course, is to turn to the professed historian for the information he craves; and, more particularly, when the matter is of a constitutional or legal character, to the historian; of law. But, when he does so, he is only. Too likely to find one of two things. Either the information he receives, while it has a gram matical consistency, yet leaves him quite in the dark as to the daily life of the people concerned, he asks for a picture and receives a formula; or, instead of one answer to his inquiry, he is given several, all from eminent authorities and absolutely irreconcilable. Then, probably, he gives up the quest, and falls back On some neat little a priori theory of his own as to what the course of economic evolution must have been. If he does not, but makes up his mind to go to the original sources for himself, he will be fortunate if he escapes an occasional sly thrust from historian and lawyer for venturing beyond his last. His lot, therefore, Is not altogether a happy one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
