Book Picosecond X ray Spectral Studies

Download or read book Picosecond X ray Spectral Studies written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temporally and spectrally resolved x-ray emission is an important diagnostic tool for the study of target heating and compression induced by sub-nanosecond laser pulses. The use of the Livermore 15 psec x-ray streak camera to record x-ray emissions in the 1-10 keV range is described. In particular, significant progress is reported during the past year in defining the camera as a quantitative diagnostic instrument, and its implementation for multi-channel, time resolved K-edge filter measurements. Data will be presented which describe x-ray emission from a laser imploded 87 .mu.m diameter glass shell. Channels centered at 2.6, 4.0 and 5.3 keV provide temporal information which is related to the absorption and compression phases of laser heating. The relative spectral content is found to be in agreement with standard, time integrated measurements.

Book Applications of Picosecond Spectroscopy to Chemistry

Download or read book Applications of Picosecond Spectroscopy to Chemistry written by K.B. Eisenthal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the development of lasers that can generate light 11 14 pulses ranging from 10- - 10- sec duration, and capable of 13 peak powers in excess of 10 watts scientists have been able to investigate the interactions of light with matter in a time and power domain not previously possible. These ultrashort laser pulses provide a powerful tool for the study of chemical phenomena at the most fundamental level. Many of the elementary processes of importance in chemistry including energy dissipa tion, molecular motions, structural and chemical changes occur on a very short time scale and thus require special approaches. Th~ use of ultrashort laser pulses to perturb and to probe systems of interest affords a direct approach to the time reso lution of very rapid chemical phenomena. It was recognition of the impact of these relatively new approaches to chemical phenomena that motivated NATO to sponsor a meeting on the applications of picosecond spectroscopy in chemistry. The primary aim of the NATO workshop was to gain some perspective on the status of the field in terms of present research activities, technological developments and if possible the difficult task of sensing future directions. The way we decided to approach these issues was to gather together the main contributors to the field, fortunately many of whom were able to attend, to present their work and to participate in what turned out to be lively discussions of the field.

Download or read book Time resolved Diffraction written by J. R Helliwell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-12-18 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent technological advances in synchrotron and neutron sources, detectors, and computer hardware and software have made possible diffraction techniques which collect data at successive moments in time. This is the first book to bring together reviews and research articles covering the three branches of time-resolved diffraction--X-ray, electron, and neutron field. Time-Resolved Diffraction covers gases, liquids, amorphous solids, fibers, and crystals and does so in a multidisciplinary framework which includes examples from molecular biology and chemistry, as well as techniques from physics and materials science. The various time scales of data collection cover ten orders of magnitude, from the sub-pico domain to the kilosecond. Research scientists and graduate students will find this book the most complete compendium of work in this developing field.

Book Electron and X ray Source Development Using Picosecond Kilojoule Class Laser Systems

Download or read book Electron and X ray Source Development Using Picosecond Kilojoule Class Laser Systems written by Paul M King and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-modulated laser wakefield acceleration (SM-LWFA) of electrons, driven by picosecond, kilojoule class laser systems is a promising method to produce versatile x-ray sources. The electron beams, accelerated up to ≈300 MeV, are used to produce broadband (keV to MeV), low divergence (¡ 50 mrad), high photon number (>1010 photons/keV/sr) x-ray sources utilizing betatron, inverse Compton scattering, and bremsstrahlung generation mechanisms. The x-ray energy spectrum and source size can be tuned by controlling the SM-LWFA directly or the x-ray generation mechanism to provide an optimized source for radiography applications. We will discuss experimental results on electron beam and x-ray source characterization, obtained at the Jupiter Laser Facility (LLNL), and supported by 2D and 3D Particle-In-Cell simulations. Additionally, we will show several static radiography applications relevant to high energy density science and inertial confinement fusion experiments and how this source can be tuned to improve image quality in radiography. X-ray analysis tools have been developed to measure high energy x-ray spectra, source size, and radiography quality, and we have used LLNL’s x-ray ray tracing code HADES to simulate radiographic images of experimental objects and help in planning for future experiments and applications. Finally, MeV x-ray source characterization and radiography applications are explored using laser-solid interactions enhanced by compound parabolic concentrators (CPC).
