Book Sonata Fragments

  • Author : Andrew Davis
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press
  • Release : 2017-08-21
  • ISBN : 0253025451
  • Pages : 223 pages

Download or read book Sonata Fragments written by Andrew Davis and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An effort to expand sonata theory more solidly into the nineteenth-century repertoire.” —Notes In Sonata Fragments, Andrew Davis argues that the Romantic sonata is firmly rooted, both formally and expressively, in its Classical forebears, using Classical conventions in order to convey a broad constellation of Romantic aesthetic values. This claim runs contrary to conventional theories of the Romantic sonata that place this nineteenth-century musical form squarely outside inherited Classical sonata procedures. Building on Sonata Theory, Davis examines moments of fracture and fragmentation that disrupt the cohesive and linear temporality in piano sonatas by Chopin, Brahms, and Schumann. These disruptions in the sonata form are a narrative technique that signify temporal shifts during which we move from the outer action to the inner thoughts of a musical agent, or we move from the story as it unfolds to a flashback or flash-forward. Through an interpretation of Romantic sonatas as temporally multi-dimensional works in which portions of the music in any given piece can lie inside or outside of what Sonata Theory would define as the sonata-space proper, Davis reads into these ruptures a narrative of expressive features that mark these sonatas as uniquely Romantic. “A major achievement.” —Michael L. Klein, author of Music and the Crises of the Modern Subject

Download or read book Mendelssohn Time and Memory written by Benedict Taylor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Felix Mendelssohn has long been viewed as one of the most historically minded composers in western music. This book explores the conceptions of time, memory and history found in his instrumental compositions, presenting an intriguing new perspective on his ever-popular music. Focusing on Mendelssohn's innovative development of cyclic form, Taylor investigates how the composer was influenced by the aesthetic and philosophical movements of the period. This is of key importance not only for reconsideration of Mendelssohn's work and its position in nineteenth-century culture, but also more generally concerning the relationship between music, time and subjectivity. One of very few detailed accounts of Mendelssohn's music, the study presents a new and provocative reading of the meaning of the composer's work by connecting it to wider cultural and philosophical ideas.

Book Complete piano sonatas

    Book Details:
  • Author : Aleksandr Nikolayevich Scriabin
  • Publisher : Courier Corporation
  • Release : 1988-01-01
  • ISBN : 0486258505
  • Pages : 252 pages

Download or read book Complete piano sonatas written by Aleksandr Nikolayevich Scriabin and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like Chopin, Scriabin made the piano the focus of his art. Among the supreme achievements of that art are the ten sonatas he composed between 1892 and 1913, works that abundantly display both his technical virtuosity and the exhilarating emotional gamut he ranged with such individuality. All ten of Scriabin's sonatas are reprinted here from the authoritative Russian edition published in 1964. The first four reveal the influences of the pianism of Chopin and Liszt. The subsequent sonatas richly display Scriabin's emerging impressionist techniques and his deep attraction to mysticism, which progressively conjured a more and more ethereal framework of sound, now brooding and introspective, now rhapsodic and exultant. In both their technical requirements and their emotional demands, these brilliant works will offer pianists a deeply satisfying challenge. Nonpianists will also enjoy this finely made edition, with which they may follow, music in hand, the growing number of loved and recorded performances of these masterpieces.

Book The Life of Beethoven

Download or read book The Life of Beethoven written by David Wyn Jones and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-11-19 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'My compositions bring me in a good deal ... I state my price and they pay.' Beethoven was an inspired composer but he was also a working musician with sound commercial sense. David Wyn Jones's account of Beethoven the man and composer reveals the life of a creative musician in Bonn and Vienna in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. While paying due regard to the image of Beethoven as one of the most single-minded composers in the history of music, this biography places his work in the context of the musical life of the period. Through an understanding of the changing nature of musical patronage, the private and public concert, the impact of the Napoleonic Wars on culture and society, and the increasing ambition of musical life in the period after the end of the wars, a varied and dynamic picture of Beethoven's musical career emerges.

Book Anton Rubinstein

Download or read book Anton Rubinstein written by Philip S. Taylor and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-14 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first modern biography in English of Russian composer-pianist Anton Rubinstein, this book places Rubinstein within the context of Russian and western European musical culture during the late 19th century, exploring his rise to international fame from humble origins in Bessarabia, as well as his subsequent rapid decline and marginalization in later musical culture. Taylor provides a balanced account of Rubinstein's life and his career as a piano virtuoso, conductor, composer, and as the founder of Russia's first conservatory. Widely considered the virtuosic heir to Liszt, and recognized internationally as an equivalent cultural icon, he performed with most leading musicians of the day, including Liszt himself, Joachim, Clara Schumann, Vieuxtemps, Wieniawski, Saint-Saens, and Ysaÿe.

Book Beethoven s Symphonies Arranged for the Chamber

Download or read book Beethoven s Symphonies Arranged for the Chamber written by Nancy November and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-10 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early nineteenth-century composers, publishers and writers evolved influential ideals of Beethoven's symphonies as untouchable masterpieces. Meanwhile, many and various arrangements of symphonies, principally for amateur performers, supported diverse and 'hands-on' cultivation of the same works. Now mostly forgotten, these arrangements served a vital function in nineteenth-century musical life, extending works' meanings and reach, especially to women in the home. This book places domestic music-making back into the history of the classical symphony. It investigates a largely untapped wealth of early nineteenth-century arrangements of symphonies by Beethoven - for piano, string quartet, mixed quintet and other ensembles. The study focuses on three key agents in the nineteenth-century culture of musical arrangement: arrangers, publishers and performers. It investigates significant functions of those musical arrangements in the era: sociability, reception and canon formation. The volume also explores how conceptions of Beethoven's symphonies, and their arrangement, changed across the era with changing conception of musical works.
